This activity is now closed

The UK isn’t exactly known for having warm, sunny weather so we often have to make the most of what we’ve got and try to make our homes feel as bright as possible...even on the rainiest of days. VELUX would like you to enter their Pinterest competition and hear the reasons why you would love to add a single-storey extension to your home.

Grant Sneddon, VELUX daylight expert says: “Many people tend to rely on glass doors such as bi-fold and patio doors to bring daylight into their extensions. However, as extension doors tend to be further away from the original room, natural daylight – even on the brightest of days – can’t penetrate very far into the house. VELUX roof windows are the answer. They let in twice as much daylight as vertical windows because the glazing is angled directly towards the sun.”

VELUX wants you to create your own home extension mood board on Pinterest with inspiration for creating a space that’s filled with natural daylight for you and your family to enjoy at home. Whatever you would do to bring daylight into your home extension, pin all your inspiration on your mood board and share it with VELUX.

Carefully follow the guidelines below.

1) Create a moodboard on Pinterest showing your inspiration for your home extension – but remember to think daylight! Include pins of light, airy, bright space and roof windows.
2) You can pin content from VELUX and anywhere else that inspires you. For inspiration, take a look at our own board here.
3) Tag your moodboard with #VELUXextensions
4) Then submit your board URL in the form here to enter

As well as creating your mood board, we would love you to share what your family would do if you could add a single-storey extension to your home. Do you have a particularly dark kitchen that you would love to open up to bring some natural light in so you can entertain friends and family? Perhaps you have a young family and want an extension that doubles as a playroom to allow you to watch over your little ones as you’re cooking or baking?

Everyone who creates and sends us a link to their mood board will be in with the chance of winning a £300 John lewis voucher. Plus all MNers who comment what they would do if they could extend their home, will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky winner will receive a £250 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and best of luck,
MNHQ

Our living room only has a rather small bay window, which is a real shame as the room itself is facing south. With a single story extension I would replace part of the walls with long windows and add some ceiling windows to allow as much daylight to enter the room as possible.

We’re planning to extend our kitchen so it’s a living space as well as a kitchen. More space to play and enjoy family time together.

I have no idea how to create a mood board on pinterest!! but I am planning on a rear single storey extension later this year. My kitchen is quite dark and only gets the very early morning sun and I want to add an area on for dining as the family add more grandchildren. I want Velux windows in the roof with a sloping ceiling to create more light although my builder tells me the roof insulation will be very expensive. At the side I want a small study/bedroom with a walk in shower so I can stay in my home when I'm older if I can't get upstairs to sleep.

Spirael · 11/03/2018 14:37

We haven't really got anywhere to extend, as our top floor is already in what would otherwise have been the loft space. However, on the top floor, there is a bathroom that currently has no windows. We have plans to someday put a window in there and give the room some natural light.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 11/03/2018 16:36

Loft conversion. We live in a rural dark skies area so would have a bank of velux windows so we can lie in bed and stargaze.

puglife · 11/03/2018 18:43

I would extend with a single storey across the whole rear of our property to create a big, light kitchen/diner extension.

Our current kitchen is small and I'd love to have a big family space that we could all eat and socialise in.

chibsortig · 12/03/2018 06:47

I'd extend the whole rear of my home to give me a bigger kitchen and a playroom to give the kids more space.

I would love a light, bright space to put my electric piano so I could do some composing, rather than being tucked away in a dark room like I am now!

ShyPhilosopher · 13/03/2018 02:06

Our kitchen window is north-facing, so being able to have it overlooking our south-facing garden would be amazing. Plus I want to have more growing space for plants, but my back garden gets too much wind. I would therefore love plenty of room for plants too. It would be a great way to encourage the children to be more adventurous with food as they would be involved with various edible plants.

I would love to extend our home and create somewhere more airy and light. Our ground floor is an open plan kitchen diner (its a townhouse) and with only patio doors at the back, it can be quite gloomy in there, even in the summer!

Noonaylor · 13/03/2018 14:03

I'd love to have an extension with veluxs in my kitchen. I love cooking and love being outside, if I can comine the two I am one happy lady! Bring the outside in! Even when the weather is raining or snowing I love watching it through the veluxs. Hearing the rain on the roof and knowing you are all snuggled inside!

starlingsintheslipstream · 13/03/2018 17:42

If I could add a single storey extension I would love a second lounge - perhaps a more grown up space. At the moment we have an open plan lounge/diner which was great when the kids were little but now I would sometimes like to close the door on Fortnite and Rocket League to have some quiet time.

daniel1996 · 13/03/2018 17:56

I would love to have a loft conversion, I have a high roof and there is so much space up there. Two large or 4 smaller velux windows would make this unused space into a great 3rd bedroom, with blackout blinds for night time it would make a massive difference for my home and give ,my children that extra space they need. I would need the room insulating, a floor laying and plasterboarding and furnishing. A room is not a room without daylight, and Velux is just the accompaniment to do it.

jacqui5366 · 13/03/2018 18:01

I would love a Velux in my small but warm loft, it's not big enough for a room, but would make a great craft room, and as I have a yearning to take up stargazing, it would give me the perfect excuse to buy the dream telescope I have dreamt of. #seeingstars

I'd have an orangery on the back of the house, mostly so I could call it an orangery rather than a playroom so I'd sound a little posh (until someone tells me that's the incorrect use of the word orangery), unfortunately we're north facing so need as much light as possible, I can already imagine the cats finding a pocket of sunlight to lay in!

That being said, the selfish part of me has seen some lovely loft conversions, with an ensuite - no more sharing a bath with a dinosaur, a mini whisk from a play kitchen, 17 balls of assorted sizes, and the Calpol syringe that I can never find when I need it but I stand on every time I go to shower

allthingsred · 13/03/2018 18:40

If I could extend our house it would definitely be the kitchen area. Ours is tiny. I would love one of those big kitchens where it's the heart of the house.

clopper · 13/03/2018 20:00

I would extend our tiny kitchen to make a light and airy kitchen diner

I’d like to extend our house to create a dining area. Currently we just have a breakfast bar with a high chair stuck on the end, but I’d love to have space for us all to sit and have dinner as a family. The velux windows really do make a big difference to the look and feel of the space.

I would love to have an open plan kitchen/diner with sliding panels (I would also opt for blackout blinds here) leading to a conservatory extension with glass walls and skylights. I would choose sliding doors again to open out into the garden. I love the idea of it being one big space from kitchen through to garden. It will be great for socialising with family too and I would really enjoy sitting and watching the rain hit the glass. Also a conservatory with that much light will be fantastic for herbs and decorative plants like palms and orchids which I absolutley adore. Gosh I need to win the lotto and make my dream come true! I have to say it would be lovely to be able to feel like I'm outdoors even if i am tied to the cooker haha.

IlikemyTeahot · 14/03/2018 04:45

FYI previous posters I've just discovered links are actually outing!!! (No I don't know any of you in RL by the way) Might be time for name changes or edit your profiles on Pinterest.
Those who (like me) didn't notice there is a link in OP to submit our URLs and enter the competition.

MiddleClassProblem · 14/03/2018 08:08

@AaronMumsnet I’m still not getting a submit button on the competition form. I’m using iOS safari on my phone.

Is anybody else having the same trouble?

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 14/03/2018 09:34

I would extend out the back and have a big kitchen diner, I would also extend out the side and make a play/family room AND i would go into the loft and make a big bedroom with shower room! Thats the dream!

lovemyflipflops · 14/03/2018 14:42

my single story kitchen extension would look lovely with some Velux over the dining table area, would make the room look lighter, brighter and more cheerful being able to see the sky, and nature above our home.
