Keeping your washing machine in good condition is vital step to having fresh, clean clothes...who knew?! Fairy Non Bio would like you to share all your methods and tips on how you keep your washing machine clean and in tip-top shape.

Here’s what Fairy have to say: “With the amount of washing we all do, we need to keep our faithful machines in tip top condition to keep it running for the long haul. Whether it is running a powder wash or a hot cycle every now and again, we would love to know your tips!”

Perhaps you give everything in the machine a wipe down after every wash? Do you have a schedule for how often you do an empty load? Or maybe you have some home remedies that you turn to that you think work brilliantly?

Whatever your methods are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

angela121262 · 25/03/2018 22:16

Periodically do an empty machine hot wash with washing mashing cleaner to prevent build up in the machine, clean the detergent holder out and leave this and door open.

zbody1 · 25/03/2018 22:20

I drain mine regularly , plus try and check the filter once a month .

gemmie797 · 25/03/2018 22:22

I usually use a descaler every now and again. I take the powder drawer out an clean with Zoflora and soak the drawer in warm water & Fairy to clean. It comes up like new!

I don't overfill the drum

snare · 25/03/2018 22:28

I don't do anything special

GetKnitted · 25/03/2018 22:33

a monthly boil wash to kill all the nasties

cathyov · 25/03/2018 22:53

Wipe round the seal after every wash and dry and I keep the door and the detergent drawer slightly open to vent.
Every six weeks or so I do a high temperature (max 90 degrees) wash with some white vinegar which helps stop scum building up in the machine.

To be honest I don't do much apart from leave the door open after a wash. I think I need to start taking better care of it after reading done of these tips xx

Smellophant87 · 25/03/2018 23:45

Well, I use and abuse it and hope for the best!

BrendasUmbrella · 25/03/2018 23:52

I learnt about the white vinegar cleanse on this forum. My washing machine used to beep randomly during a cycle which indicated it was getting gunged up somewhere. I now do a monthly hot wash with a bottle of white vinegar emptied into the drum and the detergent/conditioner drawers, and it has stopped beeping. Happy days!

obi1kinobi · 26/03/2018 00:14

I only ever leave the door open. I used to used calgon but I think it's too expensive.
Think I'll start doing some of the suggestions others do above.
Thanks all

Jenerate · 26/03/2018 00:38

I leave the door open as much as possible, and try to do a hot wash with the machine empty every month or so.

poppypants · 26/03/2018 08:01

Make sure you empty your pockets, coins spinning around can do lots of damage especially if you have a front loader with a glass door

joannecc · 26/03/2018 08:33

I make sure I do a 90 degree wash once a week and also run a cycle once a month empty with soda crystals and white vinegar

Goingovertosusanshouse · 26/03/2018 09:46

White vinegar instead of softener. Use the self clean mode once a week.

blue25 · 26/03/2018 09:52

I try and keep the room well aired with windows open and washing machine door open. That's it really!

Pimmpom · 26/03/2018 10:22

Once a month a run a very hot wash with powder and just put a couple of tea towels in.

SillyMoomin · 26/03/2018 11:56

I leave my powder and conditioner drawer open after every wash if possible to help it air and not start growing slimy stuff inside!

Also do a 90 degree wash on empty once a month to dislodge anything lurking in the drum or seals.

Other than that, the occasional capful of zoflora is thrown in with a smelly wash to help ease the smells, and I figure that the disinfectant helps the machine too!

princesssmithee · 26/03/2018 12:44

leave the door open between washes :)

FrenchieMum2Be · 26/03/2018 13:16

I run an overnight boil wash (on empty) to clear everything up about once every 3 months. Love the environment but washing at 30 degrees all the time creates a buildup of bacteria I think!

rachelbonness · 26/03/2018 13:17

I use de-scaling tablets every month

andreaca · 26/03/2018 13:20

I do a beckmans washer cleaner a few times a year, I have to my hubby works outside and his clothes get scruffy.

noynoyavery · 26/03/2018 15:14

Once a week 90 wash as I normally wash at 40 , keep the draw clean ad washed out as when i is gunked up this could contain ecoli and other harmful bacteria.

molly57 · 26/03/2018 18:34

I leave the door open after each wash so the inside airs and dries out.
