Keeping your washing machine in good condition is vital step to having fresh, clean clothes...who knew?! Fairy Non Bio would like you to share all your methods and tips on how you keep your washing machine clean and in tip-top shape.

Here’s what Fairy have to say: “With the amount of washing we all do, we need to keep our faithful machines in tip top condition to keep it running for the long haul. Whether it is running a powder wash or a hot cycle every now and again, we would love to know your tips!”

Perhaps you give everything in the machine a wipe down after every wash? Do you have a schedule for how often you do an empty load? Or maybe you have some home remedies that you turn to that you think work brilliantly?

Whatever your methods are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I leave the door open when the washing machine isn’t being used, so it can air and dry out.

coldlocation · 19/03/2018 13:05

Always leave the door open after a wash, soda crystals for a decent clean/descale.

Candyperfumegirl · 19/03/2018 19:12

I run a empty hot cycle at least once a month.

Gazelda · 19/03/2018 19:50

Leave the door open after a wash. Likewise the drawer.
Do a hot cycle regularly.

daisyduke66 · 19/03/2018 20:29

I run a washing machine cleaning cycle (with a specific machine cleaning product) through each month and this seems to do the trick :)

ursuslemonade · 19/03/2018 21:15

Always washing powder
Mainly use vinegar instead of fabric conditioner
Always wipe dry the bottom of seal where water stands
Leave door ajar
Use hot cleaning cycle with soda crystal in drum and vinegar as f.c.

katiewalters · 20/03/2018 09:47

Once a month I will do an empty wash on the highest setting with soda crystals or vinegar and baking soda. I wipe all the rubber bits and clean the detergent drawer. I also make sure I take clothes out straight away after washing them, and leave the door open a bit for it to air out

rejcomp · 20/03/2018 10:24

Handwash everything! :D

Teresa11 · 20/03/2018 11:20

I now always wipe the inside of the door down when finished - I never did this with my last one and the rubber seal eroded really quickly.

Doodygirl2009 · 20/03/2018 12:13

I was my washer once a month with a drop of bleach on a full hot cycle and I leave my door open after every wash to dry out

rocketriffs · 20/03/2018 20:18

Wipe down the seal as it tends to collect fibres and fluff and gets smelly if left. I do an empty hot wash now and again and I never overload it above the recommended weight.

katfje · 20/03/2018 21:56

I do a monthly hot wash and sometimes put in descaling tablets.

dilydaly · 20/03/2018 22:38

The only thing I do is leave the door open, it's all I've ever done really, am I really the only one ?!

Myr4 · 21/03/2018 05:48

Our machine has a maintenance wash which we are advised to run every 40 cycles and I look forward to doing that.
I also keep the door ajar when not in use and I no longer put a load on at night to hang out in the morning. I realised with my previous machine that leaving damp clothes inside for too long eventually made the seal mouldy.

Myr4 · 21/03/2018 05:53

Forgot to mention that i load detergent directly into the drum to prevent the drawer getting filthy.

emene · 21/03/2018 15:52

Every couple of weeks I do a very hot wash with Dr.Beckmann Service-it Deep Clean Washing Machine Cleaner it Kills 99.9% of bacteria and leaves the machine smelling fresh i also always leave my washing machine door open when not in use to keep away the damp.

strawberrisc · 21/03/2018 16:44

If the machine starts to smell I add white wine vinegar on a hot cycle to the drum. I have moved away from powder and use tabs instead as it can be time-consuming to clean the tray/drawer. I clean the inside of the rubber in the drum after each wash - just with a disinfectant wipe so there is never any build up.

SuzCG · 21/03/2018 20:16

I know I should take better care of mine - it's great to be reading some tips on here, thanks.

All I do is give the rubber seal a good wipe down, now & again - and leave the door open so it airs and dries out when it's not in use (rarely).

Nicole1709 · 21/03/2018 20:19

I do a wash once a month with boiling water through the drawer. This stops mould build up and keeps my machine like new.

Upyours2017 · 21/03/2018 21:26

A thorough wipe down and hot wash with bicarbonate of soda every so often ; oh and leave the door open after emptying the washing!

Inyosi · 21/03/2018 21:48

I run a boil wash every month... bit iffy about using anything with chemicals as I suffer from eczema and my washing machine has lasted me 7 years so far

sbruin1122 · 21/03/2018 22:20

regular cleaning

FurryTurnipHead · 21/03/2018 22:22

I have switched to powder recently and have found the dispenser tray seems much less clogged up from when I used liquid. I also do a short wash with vinegar in every now and again (when I remember...)

Kandboys · 22/03/2018 13:37

Leave the washing machine draw and door open in between washes plus every week I run a very hot wash with a dishwasher tablet in the drum which cleans it well.

aggga8 · 22/03/2018 14:15

Once a month a do a empty hot wash with adding little soda. It help to keep washing machine clean and smell free:)
