A regular topic of discussion amongst MNers is the steep learning curve that parenting entails. It’s not uncommon for first-time parents to be a little bit OTT when it comes to DC1, investing in every last toy, cream and accessory that the baby books recommend - even if this overzealousness suffers a rapid decline with subsequent children.

Here is what Asda Little Angels have to say, ‘We know how much fun you can have when shopping for your first little angel, and how easy it is to get carried away. We’d love to hear the stories behind your most extravagant purchasing missteps!’

Asda Little Angels would like to know the extra-lengths you went to for your precious first born. What unnecessary extravagances did you invest in before you started to follow your instincts and simply go with the flow?

Perhaps you carried a painfully heavy changing bag fully-stocked with ‘must-have’ gadgets on every outing, before realising that a wet wipe was sufficient in most situations. Or maybe you bleached every surface your first baby came into contact with, but by child number two reached the conclusion that a quick wipe on your jeans was probably an adequate way of cleaning something.

Whatever the passing quirk, please share it below and you will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I recently discovered a timetable I had written for DS’s dad when he finally took a day off work to look after DS on his own. DS was 7 months old. I had written a massively detailed schedule which included regular “hug time” Blush and details of what to do in every possible scenario that had even a remote chance of happening Blush

BeeMyBaby · 05/03/2018 22:11

Lots of hair bands for my DD although she was bald until she was well past 2yo

Scoleah · 05/03/2018 22:16

Husband bought timberland boots for the new arrival!

DoryNora · 05/03/2018 22:23

Shoes! DS would just curl his little toes up until I eventually gave up trying to put them on, never successfully managed to get any type of shoes or boots on his feet until he started to stand up. Even then they last a maximum of 10 minutes!

tararabumdeay · 05/03/2018 22:40

A father rather than a sperm. Still the most expensive thing I've ever bought for my children.

FogCutter · 05/03/2018 22:49

A nappy wrapper/ bin thing that absolutely stunk. I soon realised that nappies had to be bagged up and put in the outside bin ASAP 🤢

A pink princess Moses basket with all the lace and trimmings (mattress canopy baby blankets and side frills) it looked so beautiful in the shop, but when I used it it was so impractical, and only lasted 3 months when my DD grew out of it.

Newborn clothes - I spent a fortune on cool, trendy outfits for my little boy - and soon came to learn that they LIVE in baby grows. The cheaper the better - because they all get ruined in the poonami!

We also wasted a fortune on prams - firstly buying the expensive Silver Cross Travel System with everything, then buying an all terrain pram and finally strollers.

To indulge my love of Nirvana and not subject my baby to the explicit lyrics, I bought a Rockabye Baby Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit Lullaby CD!

It's great - we still listen to it now (7 years later) and I hope it will influence his musical tastes as he grows up.

EinsteinsArousedSausagesHCB · 06/03/2018 15:05

I bought rockabye baby Metallica CD, in truth I actually bought it for DH not DC.

I regretted buying loads of ridiculously trendy outfits for newborn baby.

TattyDevine · 06/03/2018 23:46

Nothing too mad but first child could have done Paris fashion week if the sod could have walked. (Mainly gifts to be fair - first grandchild and all that). They get bored for subsequent children and DD spent 18 months in a baby grow and cardi. No wonder she likes a onesie now 😂

Pinkbedsheets · 07/03/2018 01:56

I bought my dd a Dracula halloween costume when she was 11 months, not because I was taking her trick or treating (I was scared she would get scared), but because it looked cute. We don’t celebrate Halloween.

cocopopo · 07/03/2018 03:21

Newborn clothing...my DS was 12lb 6oz.... 3-6 months fit better!

BinglyBinglyBeep · 07/03/2018 03:47

A gorgeous woollen jumpsuit from Gap. The first time I ever paid full price for anything from there, I actually went out of my way to get it having seen it online, and just previously used a 50% off voucher to get other sensible things.

Not just a cream colour, perfect for picking up stains from every meal DD had, but with 9 (nine!)teeny tiny buttons that had to be undone and done up every time wriggly rolly DD was changed.

AllTheWayDown · 07/03/2018 10:54

Clothes! Me and dh went a bit mad when I was about 30 weeks pregnant and bought so many things. Not realising that that's all people buy you when the baby is born! Then she was 6lb 5oz when she was born so we had to go and buy tiny baby clothes anyway as even newborn size stuff drowned her!
@Lillygolightly we also got dd her own sky remote as she's obsessed! Have never met anyone else who's done this before Grin

MummyBtothree · 07/03/2018 15:11

We bought a moses basket for DS that never got used, he was 9lb12oz and I thought it might tip over. For all three DC we bought far too many clothes that often didn't get round to wearing at all because they grow so fast.

Jaderice21 · 07/03/2018 18:15

newborn baby clothes should of got 0-3 i was bless with two big babies lets just say newborn didnt even fit at the hospital id advise 0-3 just in case better abit big than too small will fit longer too which is good they outgrow clothes quicker than a mumma can blink

Hippobottymus · 07/03/2018 21:31

The most ridiculous thing I bought was baby wellies... they weren't even waterproof!

Apricots17 · 08/03/2018 00:25

Max is my first baby and so me and my partner went a bit crazy and bought ...
A giant second hand pram bought on impulse when I was about 3 months pregnant - it was hideous and took up half the living room so we ended up giving it to the local charity shop.
About 700 newborn and size 1 nappies. Fortunately I knew other mums to be I could pass these on too when I realised how fast babies grow!
The craziest thing I have done for my baby was suck snot out of his nose when he had a cold with some little tube contraption I never knew existed! How my life has changed haha...It's still a huge learning curve but loving it :)

Marie1276 · 08/03/2018 02:14

When DD1 was born i bought a lot of clothes for her that many she didn't got the chance to wear as she grew fast and outgrown on them. Also she was wearing only babygrows most of the time. Then i kept all for the second child that happened to be a girl too.But again she got a lot of clothes as gifts from families and friends and so many were left unwear.
Then i decided to donate them all as we decided to stop on baby number 2 🤣🤣🤣
Also i got very stressful when DD1 was a newborn,i sterilized all her bottles and shooters up to age 1.But with DD2 i did it up to 3rd months only 😂😂😂 When i think about all of this,i laugh so much as motherhood is not something that we learn from books, internet or others...But we got to live it ourselves to know 🤔🤔🤔

briwig · 08/03/2018 10:09

We washed and ironed all the clothes and blankets. It’s almost here, but we already realise how ridiculous it is! :)

Pigeonpea · 08/03/2018 11:51

A designer dress that she wore once - Learning! By gorgeous fun, practical clothes that are way less expensive!!!

Powerpuffwoman · 08/03/2018 12:38

I used to put the wet wipes on the radiator to keep them warm for pfb's precious little bum bum. I used to change her vests every time there was the tiniest amount of milk or sick. I put her bootees back on every zillionth time she kicked them off, because you know, baby's need to wear bootees right? I read her bedtime stories even though she hadn't a single clue what I was talking about, so I may as well have just talked to dp next to me if she wanted to hear my voice.

I bought way too many ridiculous fancy outfits when the truth is she lived in babygros the first few months of her life as it was easier and more comfortable. I bought fancy frilly pants in 0-3months to put over her nappy even though it was the middle of winter. I bought a tiny swimming costume even though I knew I probably couldn't take her swimming, just because it was in the sale and sooo cute.

I used a fresh plastic cover every time I took her temperature with the digital thermometer. She wasn't even ill. Oh and I would take her temperature several times a day in the first month or two. I also bought every room temp measure going - gro egg, cheaper version of gro egg, the sticky wall ones, the one that is on the baby cam, etc as I was so paranoid of her being over heated.

So many fun things to look back on and laugh at myself for. Grin

ConorMcGregorsChin · 08/03/2018 12:51

A crib that was never ever slept in!

WilmaJean · 08/03/2018 18:23

I ironed all of his clothes... only the once though Grin
