A regular topic of discussion amongst MNers is the steep learning curve that parenting entails. It’s not uncommon for first-time parents to be a little bit OTT when it comes to DC1, investing in every last toy, cream and accessory that the baby books recommend - even if this overzealousness suffers a rapid decline with subsequent children.

Here is what Asda Little Angels have to say, ‘We know how much fun you can have when shopping for your first little angel, and how easy it is to get carried away. We’d love to hear the stories behind your most extravagant purchasing missteps!’

Asda Little Angels would like to know the extra-lengths you went to for your precious first born. What unnecessary extravagances did you invest in before you started to follow your instincts and simply go with the flow?

Perhaps you carried a painfully heavy changing bag fully-stocked with ‘must-have’ gadgets on every outing, before realising that a wet wipe was sufficient in most situations. Or maybe you bleached every surface your first baby came into contact with, but by child number two reached the conclusion that a quick wipe on your jeans was probably an adequate way of cleaning something.

Whatever the passing quirk, please share it below and you will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Nappy bin. It wasn’t used for very long...

xQueenMabx · 28/02/2018 20:39

Expensive cot mobile which played tunes and whale noises, built in projector and colour changing lights. Baby was terrified of it!

piraterach · 28/02/2018 20:42

We bought (and were gifted) far too many baby clothes. I was having to change 3mo DD several times per day just to make sure she wore them all before she grew out of them. She also had a gorgeous furry gilet that she wore for 5 minutes before her hands and mouth were covered in fluff, fur and a drooly baby don't mix!

BeakyPlinder · 28/02/2018 20:58

Loads of baby towels....they are really small especially now hes 1 its like trying to dry yourself with a flannel.

I also have a cupboard full of normal towels but obviously at the time I thought they are for adults so I couldn't possibly use one on a baby

I've been having a good chuckle reading this thread!! :) I'd never even heard of a wipe warmer!!
My extravagant & totally unnecssary purchased was a baby seat which vibrated to mimic the motions of a car - this was an impulse purchase made in the middle of the night, when I was delirious from lack of sleep & would have given my right arm for anything to get LO to sleep through!! It was pretty cool - it even had the sound effects of rain on the windscreen & windscreen wipers!!
It was a waste of money though as he only went in a few times before the novelty wore off & he realised he wasn't actually in the car!
He was smarter than me even then!

Brought loads of little outfits in small sizes including jeans which didn't get worn at all.
The same as the baby shoes.

SanFranBear · 28/02/2018 21:25

Haha - the things you buy when sleep deprived are very amusing...

We were bought practically everything by my very excited MIL but i remember being adamant that we'd buy PFB's 'coming home from hospital' outfit. She is a summer baby so I bought this gorgeous (expensive) sundress which was so impractical.. couldn't wear a vest under it which is essential obviously to protect her little belly button. She didnt wear it - although I may have put it on her a few days later for a photo and it absolutely drowned her.. Not sure why it was sold in newborn to be honest but it was so pretty Grin

That and the rocking reindeer thing at about 4 months old.. neither her nor her brother used it - ever!

littleme96 · 28/02/2018 21:38

A baby wipe holder tub thing - in theory you were meant to decant a smaller pile of wipes into it rather than having to carry a whole pack around with you. In reality, it was a huge faff and just easier to sling a full pack into the changing bag.

kristinage · 28/02/2018 21:43

I love this brand!!

Imgettingcheesefries · 28/02/2018 21:45

Bought so many pretty little outfits she never got to wear because she was in vests and babygrows for the first few weeks. Also saw that everyone had a Sophie the giraffe so we bought one, baby was never interested in it all and my mum thought it was the dogs toy when she saw it

del2929 · 28/02/2018 22:41

a big fat fancy moses basket- she never slept in it.

RainyDayBear · 28/02/2018 23:00

I used to sterilise the scoop you use to scoop formula out Blush

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 28/02/2018 23:22

I logged everything on an app. And I mean everything!
Weed, poos, sleep, how long on each boob, hiccups, wind. The lot.
All it achieved was to make me anxious about dd. She was happy and healthy but the app said .....
The day that dd kicked my phone into a jug of water that was heating up her milk and I realised that the app eas gone, was at first one of the most terrifying and quickly, one of the most liberating of my life!

MiddleClassProblem · 28/02/2018 23:29

I had a half an hour freak out over a rash on DD’s belly that didn’t go away with the glass test. I called 111. Just before they called back I found out it was a raspberry stain...

That was before I had CBT and fortunately not many other made anxiety stories relating to DD like that. Surprised there aren’t more tbh!

kateandme · 01/03/2018 03:14

to many how to books.too many set of clothes(just wash)toys when thye only had one favourite at a time.
nappy bag that had all the 'right compartment' it eend up a mess anyway as I don't have the time nor want to have everything rganised whe I'm a a tiz or rush.so a all round bag was better choice.

claza93 · 01/03/2018 06:45

Has to be the cup without a lid that I tried to get my baby to drink from when we were weaning. Ridiculous! Went ever where. Hence to say I have not used it with my other 3 and won't be using it on my fifth!

TheWizardofWas · 01/03/2018 07:59

Superexpensive bottle that ‘mimicked’ the female breat. DS hated it any which way.

IceBearRocks · 01/03/2018 08:20

Tinker tippee nappy bin!!!! What a waste of money

SleeplessMomma · 01/03/2018 09:31

An expensive travel system that doesn’t fit in the boot of my little run around car. It now sits in the backseat of my car meaning I can only have one passenger at a time! 🤦🏽‍♀️

Anniegb72 · 01/03/2018 09:38

I bought too many clothes.. some designer ones too.. Ted Baker and little cute shoes which she grew out of and some never even wore! I now think back and realise I wasted far too much money! 🙈

Nurse15 · 01/03/2018 09:43

Baby converse GrinGrin

userabcname · 01/03/2018 09:53

So many adorable little outfits in 'newborn' size. DS was an absolute chunk and was in the next size up within a month. Most of it all still has the labels on!
Oh and several sets of bottles, teats, a steriliser, prep machine, 2 tubs of formula and some ready made formula bottles...DS was a bottle refuser. He has only recently at 8 months started to take a couple of ounces of formula....from a cup! Absolute waste!

Standingoutsidethefire · 01/03/2018 10:08

Bought lovely outfits that had to match, even the socks. Made own healthy, organic baby food for weaning and froze in specially bought weaning pots.... second child (6 months) lives in babygros and eats cheese spread sandwiches and petit filous yoghurt! I also bought first a really expensive fancy high chair from mamas and papas....waste of money as she was just as happy in the Ikea antilop one my parents bought for their house.. and it was easier to cleanHmm

qate · 01/03/2018 10:09

A special smell-concealing nappy bin...friends swore by it but 8 months and several thousand nappies later, its still in the box in the cupboard!

Nicnak27 · 01/03/2018 13:29

A pair of baby Uggs!!! Which dont stay on and ended up in the change bag on every attempt to wear!
