A regular topic of discussion amongst MNers is the steep learning curve that parenting entails. It’s not uncommon for first-time parents to be a little bit OTT when it comes to DC1, investing in every last toy, cream and accessory that the baby books recommend - even if this overzealousness suffers a rapid decline with subsequent children.

Here is what Asda Little Angels have to say, ‘We know how much fun you can have when shopping for your first little angel, and how easy it is to get carried away. We’d love to hear the stories behind your most extravagant purchasing missteps!’

Asda Little Angels would like to know the extra-lengths you went to for your precious first born. What unnecessary extravagances did you invest in before you started to follow your instincts and simply go with the flow?

Perhaps you carried a painfully heavy changing bag fully-stocked with ‘must-have’ gadgets on every outing, before realising that a wet wipe was sufficient in most situations. Or maybe you bleached every surface your first baby came into contact with, but by child number two reached the conclusion that a quick wipe on your jeans was probably an adequate way of cleaning something.

Whatever the passing quirk, please share it below and you will be entered into the prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

First child wanted them to have the best, spent £1100 on a travel system which I used for sixth months before swooping to a cheap stroller and second hand car seat when he moved up to the next size!

sharond101 · 28/02/2018 12:29

All I ones with no buttons! Who even created them??

ifigoup · 28/02/2018 12:34

Special top and tail bowls. We soon realized they were basically... bowls.

Knowing that money would be tight preemptively bought clothes for DS' first 12 months but bought too much! DH and I now have to share the small chest of drawers that was intended for DS while he has the larger drawers all to himself and those barely fit his current age range (3-6m) so the rest of the ages are crammed into multiple plastic storage boxes... Despite this, I STILL continue to buy more clothes for him. He just looks so darn cute in them all. 🙈

Emmax12 · 28/02/2018 13:25

Shoes. My daughter absolutely hated anything on her feet, shoes and socks, but I kept buying these pretty little shoes that she kicked off and cried at. Why did I keep buying them 😂

Not overly extravagant but with DC1, I remember buying quite a large changing bag - at the time I thought it would be great as it had separate sections for EVERYTHING. I used it twice then realised it was far too big and annoying and I could just shove some nappies and muslins in my bag and it worked perfectly.

I had a day of ironing all the baby clothes/sheets/blankets before DC1 arrived. I don't think any of those things have ever seen an iron since & we're onto DC3 now! Other than that, I'm quite a laissez-faire sort of parent. I give birth to them, feed them, clothe them... Beyond that they've got to fend for themselves!

When I was 13 weeks pregnant and very excited, we purchased an expensive pram / travel system. DS is now 10 weeks old and I really hate that pram. There is nowhere to keep it in the house so it lives in the car boot. But takes up so much space there is no room for anything else. It's also rubbish to push and struggles with the slightest curb. Now looking for a cheaper, smaller stroller!

N2986 · 28/02/2018 14:37

Baby bouncers and swings. I've tried about every type going and all 3 of my dc hated them. Also baby mobiles, pram toys, playmats etc. Dc3 prefers an empty pop bottle to roll around or a magazine to destroy Blush. Ha and a baby cook book! I was sure dc1 would love my lentil bake (not so much!)

CircleofWillis · 28/02/2018 15:00

I used to warm baby wipes in my cleavage.

I once walked home in my dress-lining as I used my dress to shade DC in the pram from the sun.
We were addicted to Muslims and had over 100!

CircleofWillis · 28/02/2018 15:06

Muslins not Muslims (Autocorrect 😊)

Royalsteph · 28/02/2018 16:31

When I was pregnant with dc1 I bought some cute fluffy trousers and matching jacket with a baby gro for his coming home outfit and a baby on board Teddy for the car costing me £100. The bloody clothes didn't fit and the Teddy was useless as I didn't have a car and couldn't even drive. Dc2, 3 and 4 all got a baby gro from a supermarket as their coming home outfit.

MargoLovebutter · 28/02/2018 16:45

I bought one of those sani bin things that used nappies are supposed to go in. It honked like a dead dog from virtually day one & was such a waste of money.

Moses basket was also a pointless item. Used to rustle like a pen full of sheep at lambing time, everytime DS so much as farted. I think we used it for one night.

peanutbutter310 · 28/02/2018 16:57

For the first few months you could tell in an instant which clothes I bought early in my pregnancy, before I knew anything at all about babies. A wool, hand wash only, sleepsuit with individual buttons instead of poppers. And the cutest little linen playsuit, with no access to the nappy without entirely undressing baby.

Needless to say, they didn't get worn much.

SparklesandBubbles · 28/02/2018 17:12

Spent a small fortune on some gorgeous baby grows from France when we were on our baby moon there. They were a) totally impractical - buttons up the back and b) DS only wore them once as they were tiny!

sarat1 · 28/02/2018 17:37

Long sleeved vests - never used

CheeseEMouse · 28/02/2018 18:18

The newborn cocoon attachment for a double buggy. The baby hated it and he then grew out of it super fast. In the end I ended up using the sling constantly. Much easier all round.

Falconhoof1 · 28/02/2018 18:29

Bottle steriliser. It was massive and took up too much kitchen counter space. I ended up just doing them in the microwave.

BonjourMinou · 28/02/2018 18:47

A mini fridge for the bedroom. I planned to express when not breastfeeding and take turns with night feeds with dh.

In reality i slept when not breastfeeding, fridge stayed in box and i eventually sold it on ebay!

foxessocks · 28/02/2018 19:31

I bought a top and tail bath for my first born which we never figured out really - we understood the reasoning behind it but we just put her in the bath...

OutComeTheWolves · 28/02/2018 19:47

A load of first size things which my baby which turned out to be 10lb and 4oz barely fit in to!

Tefiti2 · 28/02/2018 19:57

Bought newborn JEANS... oh how I laughed st myself when baby was born.

Abis04 · 28/02/2018 20:02

Outfits with buttons up the back - we had loads of them that were never worn!

MadhousMom59 · 28/02/2018 20:18

N2986. My old dad did the same.x

CathBookworm · 28/02/2018 20:25

I bought all sorts of nonsense things. I bought a ridiculously over large buggy, a special gadget you put on the buggy to measure how many miles you walked.. (never used), too many changing bags-I could go on.
