The rules on laundry and what to do with mixing colours and fabrics can sometimes get a bit confusing with different people saying different things. Therefore Fairy Non Bio would like to know what your tips and tricks are when it comes to mixing colours and fabrics?

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio have to say: “Everyone’s got their own way of doing things. We design our products so that you can get the most out of every load but would love to know how you divide and conquer your washing and what you use for it!”

Do you find that once colours have been washed once you can mix them with the lighter colours? Are there certain fabrics that you know can be easily washed together? Or have you figured out a laundry system that means your dark colours no longer bleed into lighter clothes? Maybe you’ve had a laundry disaster that forced you to change how you did things?

Whatever your tips are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

I'm terrible at splitting my washing! I usually do a white loaf and a colour load and that it's! Anything that's for fussy instructions I will separate but generally chuck it all in! I wash at 30 mostly and haven't had to many disasters!

Funkyferret · 26/01/2018 15:28

We have very few items of pure white or really pale clothing, so do them when a load builds up (or very occasionally, if they've got spills or bad marks, will bung an item in on its own with a stain remover). New jeans or items of dark clothing go in with darks only for a couple of washes and I hold back the mid colours for another wash. After that they all go in together! I use lower temperature washes and don't find a problem. I even wash black and cream towels together (the black initially having been washed separately a couple of times).

I divide all colours and whites, I make it easier with socks as I buy all the same colour, handy for when one goes missing! I also use low temps.

kimbers85 · 26/01/2018 17:02

i do all darks together and whites seperately however if i only have a couple of whites and some colours that arent too dark I mix them just to make the most out of the washing load x

We sort washing into whites, darks/colours and baby clothing. When we have towels to do or new jeans, they get put together. We sometimes split the coloured load again into things that can be tumble dried and things that can't. Everything gets a smidge of fabric softener.

By sorting and organising at the start, no further thought it required!

3 washes, lights, whites and darks!

giddyypixie · 26/01/2018 17:35

Don't! Turning white clothes pink and grey has taught me it's better to be safe than sorry!

arat · 26/01/2018 19:17

Apart from new stuff, a 40 degree wash seems fine for everything our family is wearing most weeks. Might take a bit more care if we've had a special occasion, but all the routine stuff gets chucked in!

littlemonkeyz · 26/01/2018 19:20

I generally only have 2 piles of washing, whites and colours. Everything gets bunged on a 40 wash and I've never had any problems. The only thing I wash apart are wool jumpers etc which go on a hand wash cycle.

NoStraightEdges · 26/01/2018 19:22

Eeek! No mixing of colours here-until you see the red superman pants merrily going round and round with the white school shirts that you've just put on a 60 wash! Luckily the shirts weren't pink and I think it's largely because I wash everything so much there is no dye left to transfer.

spottypjs · 26/01/2018 20:07

Never put any whites in with colours and if something coloured is brand new be extra careful with it and maybe use a colour catcher

freefan · 26/01/2018 20:08

I find my 30 degree quick wash works on all fabrics and I do split my washing into colours, darks and whites for totally hassle free laundry. Very little need for a higher temperature wash.

littleme96 · 26/01/2018 20:31

Unless something is hand wash only, it all gets bunged in the machine at 40. Towels and bedding get washed on a hot wash with no fabric conditioner.

Whites get washed separately with whitening powder.

sarah861421 · 26/01/2018 21:01

I try and wash white whites on their own but get confused by the rest, I am in my 50's and still cant "divide" things properly. \what are you supposed to do with stripes for goodness sake!!!!

addverbaan · 26/01/2018 21:04

I wash at a low temp and throw a colour catcher sheet in too

sealight123 · 26/01/2018 21:09

I simply organise my laundry as darks, mixed colours and whites. I always have it running at about 40 and haven't had any mishaps....yet...

rennie1811 · 26/01/2018 21:10

If I am mixing different colours I always use a colour catcher to try and stop them running, it has worked so far. I usually only do it though if I am in a hurry.

LeeR1985 · 26/01/2018 21:10

I find after washing stuff a couple of times, the colours don't tend to run. I mix colours all the time, mostly due to laziness haha. Luckily no issues so far!

towser44 · 26/01/2018 21:12

We just bung anything and everything in the same wash at the default 40 degrees!

rhinosuze · 26/01/2018 21:19

Honestly I shove all the kids stuff in together and wash low, yet to have a disaster
I never mix whites with anything else though

Marg2k8 · 26/01/2018 21:26

Wash darks and lights separately. First time you wash something that might run, such as new jeans, wash them separately.

Lisapaige24 · 26/01/2018 21:43

I have over the years learned a valuable lesson of mixing colours so now I stick to washing lights, darks, delicates, towels, and bedding separate and things with beads, etc on them put in a little wash bag so they don’t get bounced around too much and ruin put on a quick wash with a low spin cycle

kristianjsnooks · 26/01/2018 21:43

I always do a spot check to see if darker / newer items are colour fast before mixing with anything too light.

user1496053440 · 26/01/2018 21:52

Light with light clothes and dark with dark clothes and I never mix them

mkt13 · 26/01/2018 21:59

reds and pinks all together, Whites always on their own
