The rules on laundry and what to do with mixing colours and fabrics can sometimes get a bit confusing with different people saying different things. Therefore Fairy Non Bio would like to know what your tips and tricks are when it comes to mixing colours and fabrics?

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio have to say: “Everyone’s got their own way of doing things. We design our products so that you can get the most out of every load but would love to know how you divide and conquer your washing and what you use for it!”

Do you find that once colours have been washed once you can mix them with the lighter colours? Are there certain fabrics that you know can be easily washed together? Or have you figured out a laundry system that means your dark colours no longer bleed into lighter clothes? Maybe you’ve had a laundry disaster that forced you to change how you did things?

Whatever your tips are, share them on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

After a few bad experiences i general have three washes:

  1. whites
  2. reds
  3. everything else

Its more laborious, but it works for me.

SSCRASE123 · 26/01/2018 11:47

Low temperatures and separating coloured items for their first wash to just see if they do run at all.

gd2011 · 26/01/2018 11:53

Separate laundry baskets for whites and colours

misskatamari · 26/01/2018 12:10

I'll keep things separate if I have enough for a decent wash, but if not I just wash things on a low temp. The only things I do keep separate are jeans which I know run, so always make sure to do those on a dark wash. And I do towels and bedding separately on a 60 wash

6paces · 26/01/2018 12:26

Lower temperature for less colour 'bleeding'.

emmmaaa26 · 26/01/2018 12:28

Unless its white or something new, wash it all together.

andywedge · 26/01/2018 12:32

Don't mix colours with whites

ifigoup · 26/01/2018 12:42

I've found fleece doesn't run, so I'll happily throw coloured fleece wipes and baby clothes in on a hot wash with whites.

emmav6 · 26/01/2018 12:46

i generally bung everything in and hope for the best except white school shirts

iut044 · 26/01/2018 12:48

Use lower temperatures where possible .

cluckyhen · 26/01/2018 13:06

I don't really have any tips - anything that is dark or light is separated and colours it varies - really brights I do colours if they are not too bad I tend to pop them in with my darker towels.

sandy31 · 26/01/2018 13:07

I always use a low temperature for a mixed wash and never have any bother, obviously use a good quality washing powder.

julieef · 26/01/2018 13:07

I only mix darks/colours with white when they have been washed a few times

sweir1 · 26/01/2018 13:10

I put whites and lights on together at 40

Zebee · 26/01/2018 13:13

40 degrees (tried 30 for a bit and didn’t work well enough). Do a dark wash and light wash - have enough of both to do separate loads. Occasional jumper wash. Nice and simple just need to keep on top of it.

DontFundHate · 26/01/2018 13:16

I wash new dark items separately for the first time if I remember, then I put everything in together regardless of colour - my top tip is not to buy anything plain white in the first place Grin

holey · 26/01/2018 13:17

Firstly, I rarely worry about different fabrics as I don't tend to buy anything that needs special care.
I wash most things at a lower temperature unless especially in need of a deeper clean.
I split washing into lights (as opposed to whites) and darks and use the same laundry gel for both except with the lights I include a couple of tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda directly into the wash which helps keeps the whites brighter and whiter. It must work as my kids' polo shirts are always much whiter than those of their friends and the difference gets more noticeable as the school year wears on.

Ranita · 26/01/2018 13:25

I only separate out my whites and delicates. Rest gets bunged in at 40°. Have not had any issues.

strawberrisc · 26/01/2018 13:52

Once a dark coloured piece of clothing has been washed a few times I find it can then be thrown in with the whites as it no longer runs.

maryandbuzz1 · 26/01/2018 13:59

We always sort before loading the machine and wash most things on a cool wash.
I love my white bed linen so wash that on a higher tempered Türe and don’t mix coloureds in it at all.
Usually pale coloureds are alright to go in together on a cool wash.

rosie154 · 26/01/2018 14:10

I find that smooth cotton fabrics are much less likely to run.

cathwarbur · 26/01/2018 14:12

Usually seperate whites & coloureds but sometimes do a mixed washing on a 30 degee setting

glennamy · 26/01/2018 14:27

Low temperatures where possible, always wash new coloured clothes separately at first so initial colour has run. Whites separate and varied temps depending on stains/use.

helly27 · 26/01/2018 14:29

I do darks and lights but make sure anything new gets washed on its own first i mix all my fabrics and just use an eco friendly 30 wash except for bedding and towels which I wash higher to kill any germs of bugs

MSHGW · 26/01/2018 14:51

I wash whites separately, but all other colours go in together. I've never had a problem with colours running.
