Doing the laundry is one of those chores that can seem never ending; every time you think you’ve completed the load, the cycle begins all over again. Cue the laundry routine. With that in mind, Fairy Non Bio want to know what the laundry routine is in your household.

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio have to say: “We know how laundry piles up, especially with little ones running around, spilling food and playing outside. At Fairy Non Bio, we design our products so that you can keep washing simple, easy and quick; making sure your clothes are beautifully clean and gentle on skin with our fabric conditioner designed to enhance their snuggly softness. We would love to know what you do to get your washing under control and give it that extra boost!”

Do you have a laundry bag/basket for each member of your family? Perhaps you do all the whites on one day and colours on another? Do you iron as and when or all at the same time? Or maybe you pride yourself on not having a set routine?

However you organise the laundry routine in your household, share it on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I do a dark load most days of the week as my eldest uses 3 sets of clothes most days (work shirt & tie, gym & casual at home) & I do bedding, a white load & towels on the weekend. We only have 1 laundry basket although my youngest (16 Years old) son seems to think his bedroom floor is a laundry basket too. I do have a tumble dryer which doing so much washing I couldn't be without.

tishist · 08/02/2018 15:09

We have one general wash basket, one delicates, one bedlinen and towels and try to get through it as we go.

Leanfun · 08/02/2018 15:44

If its in the laundry basket it gets washed. Washing is sorted into whites, coloured and dark clothes and then each pile is washed. All tops are hung on coat hangers to dry on a clothes airer in fine weather its out in the garden other wise it is indoors.

GeorgeW78 · 08/02/2018 15:55

I just do the washing when it needs doing and try to keep the whites separate. If nice weather is due I try and work it around that as I'd rather dry it outside. Ironing gets done only when it has to be done, it's such a pain Hmm We have a pop up wash basket to save space but it doesn't really work as it always seems to be up with washing in it! Confused Grin

each person has own laundry collection basket they have to bring it down and sort out for the load iam doing usually weekends. thet have to put them into the washing machine last one to put theirs in has to put it on, i have 2 teenage boys, this gets them used to washing . its funny when they hold up an item and ask light or dark, but its working for us. they have to sometimes hang tthem out as well, depends on activities.

FurryTurnipHead · 08/02/2018 16:47

I wash at least once a day, often more. I have a slight obsession with tea towels that have been used even once, so do lots of those! Also we have a house of people with muddy hobbies- running, walking, cycling - so there's usually a fairly hot wash at 60 degrees for muddy stuff a couple of times each week. Other stuff just done when baskets get full!

womblelancs · 08/02/2018 18:13

My routine is nice and simple - one basket, when it's full, pop it in the machine. We have very few whites in our house, so we only do a whites wash about once every few months. As for ironing? Well, we do have an iron somewhere - I think I saw it a few years ago ;)

Brandypie · 08/02/2018 18:36

One laundry basket, washed according to whatever seems the priority on the day. Washer is usually on daily! Ironing is 'saved' to do in one hit, unless something is needed of course!

cathryn1 · 08/02/2018 18:54

little and often, always try to keep it down as it does get me down, hate trying to get it dry too !

greensmith68 · 08/02/2018 18:58

i have a laundry bin with darks and lights compartments when there,s enough for a load i wash it that normally every other day with 2 adults and a teenage boy in the house

AlakazamAlakazoom · 08/02/2018 19:00

Every other day in our house, darks, brights & whites, plus I try to choose similar coloured clothes for the DC so they can all go in the same wash at the end of the day!

molly57 · 08/02/2018 19:13

I work full time which includes Saturday morning. Washing is done load after load on a Sunday and dependent on weather may run into the Monday as well. Whites first, then colours and then things that need a gentle wash. When all the human clothing is done it is the dog and cats turn to have their bedding washed.

toniuk · 08/02/2018 20:17

The kids fill the drum and i put the machine on and hang it all out afterwards

cookie09 · 08/02/2018 20:55

Its never ending in my house. I put a load in the wash every 2 days, then off to the tumble dryer after then the days i'm not washing i'm ironing Shock

piggypoo · 08/02/2018 21:12

All is sorted into blacks, white and coloured clothes. Then it's washed according to what is needed, after that, it's bigger stuff like sheets, towels and curtains!

clarabella12 · 08/02/2018 21:21

we do a light and dark washing every day! brights get done at the weekend.

diddiebiddie · 08/02/2018 22:01

Just one laundry basket, we sort washing into darks and lights, far more darks so wash them first (also usually take longer to dry) then next day or few days later usually enough to do a light wash. Wash towels and bedding in separate washes usually on a longer wash cycle. Always hang clothes out to dry if we can but dry on clothes horse in winter.

ikkle87 · 08/02/2018 22:34

In our house the laundry routine consists of me walking around the house picking up the mucky clothing that is strewn on the floor before taking it down stairs, sorting it into wash loads and then washing and tumble drying where it then ends up in a pile again as when ever I fold and sort clothes people screw them in a ball looking for a t-shirt.

We wash everything where possible on a 15 minute eco cycle then with a final spin and then it goes in the tumble drier as we have no other way to dry things. I really want a dribuddy or heated airer.

Smellophant87 · 08/02/2018 22:44

We don't really have a set routine, other than keeping the baby's washing separate from the rest of the household. I always mean to separate out lights and darks but inevitably it all goes in together! In the summer I get everything out on the line, the rest of the time 90% goes in the tumble dryer, the few things that can't get hung near our fire to dry.

AmberCP · 08/02/2018 22:52

Every night I pick a couple of colour palettes (usually the stuff I want to wear soon, sod everyone else I’m doing the work, I get my favourite stuff clean first) and I tip out what’s in the basket, select all items that are closely coloured I.e brown and oranges, reds and pinks, black and greys.

I take a basket to the washer and put my fairy non bio tab in there and put it on a 30 degree wash for either an hour and a half cycle or a 49 minute cycle if it’s just tops and unsoiled stuff.

And it always comes out smelling lovely. Not to sound like an advert but I’m always surprised at how everything smells so good from one tiny tab. Oh and keep your tabs in the snap lock box out of reach of the kids ladies.

Then I put the first load on the airer while doing the 2nd. When that’s done I switch it to gentle dry and go to bed (after removing the jeans and shirts or I’ll be wrestling with the iron for 47 years. )

The job of re homing this mountain of clean washing is always left to the following day in the hopes that some of it will be on the bodies of my dear family as soon as they’ve noticed it’s clean and I’ll have less to put away lol.

KittyKat88 · 08/02/2018 22:57

Simple - I put my stuff with my two DDs because I always use a non-bio liquid. Hubby prefers bio and perfumed washing liquid which I think is too strong for me and our girls. I have a separate bag that is the equivalent of one wash, so when it's full on it goes! I probably do mine and the DDs' washing twice a week on the fastest wash which is a great time-saver.

VickyRsuperstar · 08/02/2018 23:23

I have 10 children so my laundry can be a nightmare of epic proportions! I have 2 machines, a large one on the ground floor (12kg drum) and a 7kg one on the top floor. Everyone's clothes go in the same basket to be washed together and all sorted by darks, lights, whites, reds, pinks and occasionally if there are enough of another type like grey, then I wash those all together too. Towels are all done together on a 60C wash for hygiene reasons. Everything else is done on short washes (40C but only 45 or 52 mins as it depends on which machine I'm using) My 6 week old baby is the only one whose clothes I put in a different laundry box and then wash them all together and I usually use the Fairy non-bio on her clothes. It's practical not to put her clothes in with the others in case they go missing while waiting in the pile to be folded and put away when dry. The laundry never stops and if I ever take a day off from it, then I regret it the next day when the laundry basket is overflowing everywhere!

sarahw2 · 08/02/2018 23:23

I have to wash at least one load every day (muddy football kits, training kits...)! We have one basket, but I keep whites to one side, colours in the middle, and delicates at the other side.

Megansmumsie · 09/02/2018 01:36

At the moment, with the cold and everyone feeling lousey, our routine has been going something like this:

1/ I sort out load and put washing on.
2/ Washing finishes and i go to put load in tumble dryer.
3/ I find tumble dryer is full of husbands work clothes from night before.
4/ I dry husbands clothes which for some reason takes for ever.
5/ Manage to dry half the load in washing machine.
6/ End up rewashing remaining contents of washing machine as it has started to smell (as it has partly dried in washing machine, damp smell carries through to tumble so wont be clean)
7/ Go to put load in tumble dryer.
8/ Find more of husbands work clothes washed (no idea when he manages to do this) but not dry.

Usually we wash lights one day- dry same day, daughters mixed- dry same day, darks next day- dry same day and husbands work clothes in between but since we've all been poorly we seem to be off kilter! I long for my washing line.

Kirstyetjohn · 09/02/2018 10:02

In our house it's not so much of a routine but one rule - try and keep on top of it! All the dirty washing goes in a basket and I do at least one washing a day. Always use non -bio for sensitive skin and little one in the family. Theres a separate basket for the ironing and my husband and I try to do this at least once a week, whilst watching TV.
