Doing the laundry is one of those chores that can seem never ending; every time you think you’ve completed the load, the cycle begins all over again. Cue the laundry routine. With that in mind, Fairy Non Bio want to know what the laundry routine is in your household.

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio have to say: “We know how laundry piles up, especially with little ones running around, spilling food and playing outside. At Fairy Non Bio, we design our products so that you can keep washing simple, easy and quick; making sure your clothes are beautifully clean and gentle on skin with our fabric conditioner designed to enhance their snuggly softness. We would love to know what you do to get your washing under control and give it that extra boost!”

Do you have a laundry bag/basket for each member of your family? Perhaps you do all the whites on one day and colours on another? Do you iron as and when or all at the same time? Or maybe you pride yourself on not having a set routine?

However you organise the laundry routine in your household, share it on the thread below and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I dont have a routine. Its gets done when i have time. When it is washed it gets hung on clothes airers in the utility room or put into the tumble dryer. In the summer it is all hung outside. I NEVER iron, dont see the point. The worst part of doing the laundry is having to put it all away.

Yumpopbythesea · 29/01/2018 10:44

When the washing basket won't shut (pretty much a daily occurance)I take an armful out and put it in the washing machine at 40.
That's it. I don't sort colours.
Sometimes if I'm feeling particularly on it I do a second load and empty the basket

Dormouse1940 · 29/01/2018 10:44

It's a bit easier in the warmer months: we don't have a dryer so have to rely on the radiators at the moment coz it's been so damp! (I know we shouldn't, don't @ me, we don't have much alternative!)

So our 'system' at the moment seems to be, let the washing pile up throughout the week in two piles: whites and other.
Then we have a blitz at the weekends to get everything washed and dried. My partner sticks a film on on Sunday nights and stands and gets everything ironed (bless that man. I hate ironing, but he says he finds it therapeutic so he doesn't mind doing the lot).

Sorted! Previously I'd been doing a load every 2 days or so 'to keep on top of it' I thought, but all it lead to was piles of laundry mounting up waiting to be ironed so actually it's easier and less cluttered just to do it all at the weekend.

Bedding at the weekend, and a white and coloured wash on alternate days. I have a towel basket in the bathroom for my towel laundry which I try to keep on top of, and a dryer in the spare room to keep on top of the trying. I always use Fairy on my towels and children's clothes as I love the unique fragrance.

ArcheryAnnie · 29/01/2018 11:32

Basket in the hall outside the kitchen. When it's getting full, either I load the washing machine and put it on or DS loads it and puts it on. (DS is more likely to do this if he doesn't have a clean school shirt for the morning.) Most of our clothes are just a low-energy colours wash, but we load the towels separately and occasionally do them at 60.

I don't use fabric conditioner because to me it makes the stuff - especially towels - feel weirdly greasy.

When the cycle has finished, DS and I hang them out on clothes horses - generally he hangs his on the clothes horse in his bedroom and I hang mine in the one in the living room, to make putting-away easier, but it's not set in stone. If I'm busy he will hang them all, and he's busy I will.

FlouncyDoves · 29/01/2018 11:52

Dad here - I do pretty much all the laundry in our household. Split into coloureds, whites and darks then wash.

We have a washer dryer, so I do two/three kids of washing then stick all the tumble dryable bits in together at the end.

If the weather’s decent it all goes on the line. Bedding done fortnightly if it doesn’t need it sooner

Littlejayx · 29/01/2018 12:01

I never tend to let my basket go more than half full. There’s nothing worse than having to do loads and loads in one day! I used to use Fairy non bio and a floral fabric conditioner, but have now swapped both to fairy!

MillyVanilli222 · 29/01/2018 12:14

We definitely lack actual routine...it tends to get done when it needs doing, although I try and keep up regular loads!

mollymoo818 · 29/01/2018 13:29

There is a laundry basket in all the bedrooms and one of my biggest rules is that everyone puts their dirty laundry in the baskets as soon as they have taken their clothes off. This goes for my husband as well as my children. It just makes things easier having all the dirty laundry in one place instead of me having to spend ages hunting round for laundry wherever they may have thrown it.

laurac1987 · 29/01/2018 14:34

We each have our own laundry bag/basket as we find things like socks get mixed up easily. I tend to try and wash each person's clothing separately, but if the load isn't full, I'll add in things from other people in our household that are easily identifiable. We have numerous clothes horses too, but generally, try and wash on different days.

mishknight · 29/01/2018 15:21

whenever the weather is due to be dry I put a load on overnight on the previous night

ha2el · 29/01/2018 16:25

When I was pregnant with my first child I read a top tip in a baby magazine which I have practised ever since. Have plenty of every item of their clothing so that you aren't forced to have to do washing because you have run out of anything. So I can wash a full machine load, and not half loads. Even the adults in the house have lots of pairs of socks and underwear for this very purpose.

holey · 29/01/2018 16:31

I have to wash every day with five of us (3 teenagers so adult sized clothes). There are laundry baskets in our room and in each of the kids' rooms as well as the bathroom. I empty ours, the boys' and the bathroom every couple of days on a loose rota whereas my daughter brings hers down when it is full or she needs something urgently! Bedding gets done once a week on a rota, eg ours on Monday, DS1 on Tuesday etc. When it is all in a heap on the floor in front of the washing machine I sort into darks and lights and wash accordingly.

glamandgeekymum · 29/01/2018 17:53

I have some sense of a routine but it's flexible to allow for changes to the loads. We are a family of 5 (7 at the weekends) so I wash every single day. Mondays washing is allocated to bedding and towels (one week i do the bedding sheets and the following week I wash the duvets and pillows). Most of our washing is darks with a white load going on when we have enough for a full load.

Ironing is another matter though and it's a case of it's done as and when the pile gets too big to look at :)

BL0SS0M · 29/01/2018 18:26

We have one laundry basket and do five or six washes a week...unless the teenager is having a room tidy in which case about ten washes that day!!

Flickabella36 · 29/01/2018 20:42

Everything is colour separated and washed by type. I generally have set days for most items so I don't forget! There are usually 2 dark, 1 white, 2 pink, 2 grey/blue, 2 towel, 2 bedding and 2 dog washes in a week. I use liquid non biological wash and sensitive fabric conditioner. I use the line in the summer and the tumble dryer and airer in the winter! I don't really iron, just a shake out!

hanarees · 29/01/2018 21:39

One shared basket and I do a lights/coloured/darks wash every few days. Bedding every fortnight. Ironing gets done as and when but I quite enjoy that!

GetKnitted · 29/01/2018 21:50

its an all or nothing thing. either I am super sorted and laundry is whizzing out of the baskets ... or in their for ages!

lynsmagoo · 29/01/2018 22:45

in my house we have a dark and light laundry basket which makes life so much easier! Instead of leaving it all for the weekend I do a wash every other night. On laundry day when i get up i go around each room and gather the dark or light baskets. When i get home as lunch time from work they go in the tumble dryer with dryer balls to stop the wrinkles so less work in ironing (just have to iron a small amount!)

dilydaly · 30/01/2018 09:57

I do (at least) 1 laundry every day. I put the laundry on first thing when I wake up, then manage to put it in the dryer or peg out (the rare occasion when it isn't raining!) before the school run. Once I'm back from the school run I'll do a second wash if need be or if for some reason I didn't get my 1 wash done the day before.
Friday there's always 3 washes, the usual load and then 2 loads for everyone's bedding.
Ironing is only done when needed and I try as much as I can to buy clothes that don't tend to crease. The dryer also helps with creasing. If my Nan could read what I've just written about ironing, she'd turn in her grave!

SerenaVanDerWoodsen · 30/01/2018 10:30

It’s fairy constant washing here, I do a load most days. No routine but do a wash when one of the wash baskets is full (one dark, one light). Try to avoid ironing if possible, so use tumble drier where possible. Otherwise it generally gets ironed when it’s needed, or every month or so once in a blue moon

tubbyj · 30/01/2018 10:39

Wash Saturday post swimming lesson all clothes for the next week at school, Wednesday wash clean school kit used including games kit for the next day. Plus a on demand wash for us...

jandoc · 30/01/2018 12:03

I don't have a routine, sometimes I keep on top of it and sometimes I don't do it often enough

sunshinewey · 30/01/2018 14:02

I have three sets of colours, whites, darks and pastel colours, my only routine really is to keep well on top of it, and of course the friday night regular wash of school uniforms and work clothes....

BrioLover · 30/01/2018 16:05

We have one washing basket and I do all of it. Whites on a Sunday to sort towels, shirts and uniform for the week. Bed linen on Tuesdays and then washes of darks and colours ad hoc. Always a uniform and jeans wash on a Friday evening (clearly my Friday nights rock!). Prefer Fairy Non Bio with any fabric softener. I do a 90 degree spin with white vinegar once per month.

If the system is compromised then all hell breaks loose!
