It’s hard to believe that there was once a time when all our gadgets didn’t exist and people had to live without modern essentials such as a washing machine Shock! Co-op Electrical would like to find out which electrical item you couldn’t live without, whether it’s one that helps with everyday life or a luxury item.

Here’s what Co-op Electrical has to say: “Electrical items are now so much a part of our lives that it’s easy to take them for granted. But we know that when our customers need a new washing machine, cooker or fridge-freezer, they need it quickly, which is why we offer next day delivery to most parts of the UK. Even a few days without a ‘luxury’ item like a TV or tablet can feel tough!"

Would you be lost without your laptop? Or is your TV precious to you as it can keep the DC occupied and allow you to watch Strictly Glitterball? Would you fail to function without your coffee machine? Or maybe your fancy straighteners are a necessity to battle frizz?

Whatever electrical item you would feel lost without, please share it below. Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Id go for my washing machine. I couldn't imagine hand washing clothes. My gran tells me that when my dad was a baby she hand washed his nappies- I can't imagine doing that.

Definitely my washing machine. Our washing pile is always massive so it would be an absolute nightmare without it!

I’ve had a good long think about this and having covered a whole range of scenarios I can honestly say that the one electrical item I could not live without is my kettle.

I could, if I had to, use my mum’s washing machine and tumble dryer, I could happily live off salad and sandwiches making my cooker redundant, I rarely bother to iron. However if I woke up one day and my kettle had gone and I couldn’t have my strong black coffee I’m not sure how I would get through the day.

My tumble dryer. Liberating when you live in a place where it doesn’t stop raining.

I'm currently loving my new cordless Dyson! It's a major upgrade from our old heavy Dyson. Also pretty attached to my Italian hairdryer, it has a silencer on it it's so powerful. Day to day though I think the basics are the essentials, fridge, oven . Phone

I'm going to go with lightbulb. Otherwise, right now at 4:30pm, I'd be sitting in the dark contemplating the safety of candles or wondering where I could acquire a gas light.

Washing machine definitely.
I dare not think about the amount of time it would take to manually wash our clothes, bedding etc or even the trouble and time it would take to use a launderette!

I have thought about this carefully and it would have to be my washing machine too. I think I could probably manage without a fridge for a bit, but with 3 children I couldn't cope with the amount of washing. I had to do without for a bit when I was younger and it was a nightmare having to carry huge bags to the launderette. My MIL had 8 kids and no washing machine bless her, and she used to wash everything by hand. I honestly can't get my head around it.

Fridge freezer, followed by the oven or microwave. I could cope with everything else as long as I can eat well.

I would be lost without my washing machine. Even with the washer i seem to struggle to get all the clothes done each week, it piles up so quickly. I cant imagine how my grandma's mum used to manage.

Hmmm tough one as we now rely on so many!! I’d have to go for the tv! That may be because right now I’m sitting watching blue planet 2 though and it’s swaying my decision as it’s tv at its absolute best!!!!

After spending most of my adult life living in flats with no outside space for drying clothes, I would have to say my tumble drier. I’ve had it for only a couple of months now and what a difference. To think of all the time I spent hanging clothes up and the piles of washing I had waiting to be washed, not to mention the clothes hanging up all around on airers, doors etc.
It’s amazing!!! I get so much enjoyment getting to the bottom of my laundry basket! Sad I know but I love it! Oh and clothes actually feel better after drying in a dryer and are all lovely and soft!

Food mixer or tv??? They usually come part and parcel. I LOVE to bake and watch tv at the same time!

Both I find very relaxing and help me to switch off!

Fridge, I think, or washing machine. Though I'd really miss the telly - at least until I know the Strictly winner!

My pressure cooker!

Working 12 hour shifts and having a rather large family it means I can get good decent meals ready in no time at all. It has a delay function which means I can set it for just before in due home and by the time I'm there it's done!

It would have to be my phone. It is my computer, notepad, reminder service, wake up call, child entertainer, children’s homework helperer, during my pregnancy it was my blood sugar notebook, my weight loss map, my TV, my Late night entertainment during night feeds, my dictionary and the list goes on...

Couldn’t do without it.

Fridge freezer

only eating pork when there is an 'r' in the month
not being able to cook /shop in bulk
having to rely more on tinned, bottled, jammed or salted food - though thinking about it, I'm getting nostalgic for one of those tinned meat pies and tinned vegetable salad :)

and good luck if you are taking a medicine that needs to be kept in the fridge

Mind you, back in the day, they used to make things like ketchup /salad cream so they didn't have to be constantly kept in the fridge. Not that I'd wish salad cream on my worst enemy.

Mrs B - I just realised you said Electric pressure cooker and googled it. I did not know such a thing existed. Holy mackerel. I thought this machine which is identical to the one I use was the last word in pressure cooker: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Prestige-Pressure-Cooker-NOT-Tested-/222701716797

I need to go and lie down
