It’s hard to believe that there was once a time when all our gadgets didn’t exist and people had to live without modern essentials such as a washing machine Shock! Co-op Electrical would like to find out which electrical item you couldn’t live without, whether it’s one that helps with everyday life or a luxury item.

Here’s what Co-op Electrical has to say: “Electrical items are now so much a part of our lives that it’s easy to take them for granted. But we know that when our customers need a new washing machine, cooker or fridge-freezer, they need it quickly, which is why we offer next day delivery to most parts of the UK. Even a few days without a ‘luxury’ item like a TV or tablet can feel tough!"

Would you be lost without your laptop? Or is your TV precious to you as it can keep the DC occupied and allow you to watch Strictly Glitterball? Would you fail to function without your coffee machine? Or maybe your fancy straighteners are a necessity to battle frizz?

Whatever electrical item you would feel lost without, please share it below. Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Very difficult to choose one. On a purely selfish level I would have to choose my hair straighteners- I literally could not leave the house without having used these in the morning or would run the risk of frightening the life out of small children on the school run! My hair really is that uncontrollable. On a survival level for the whole family it would have to be the microwave. Having a crazy home/work life means this is the life saver that means my children actually get fed something at around their normal mealtimes as we are always dashing in and out and I do not have time to prepare food in the conventional way so microwave meals are a staple in our house.

My immediate thought was my GHDs as I need to straighten my scarecrow hair every day. But, on reflection, the one thing I hate more than scarecrow hair is being cold. I have gas central heating but unless I am sat directly at the heat source, I won't feel warm. I always sit with a hot water bottle so my essential item would have to be a kettle to boil my water.

I think I rely on electrical items so much I couldn't live without a fair few of them! Household essentials are definitely washing machine and fridge freezer - as a single working parent with boys who get dirty daily and eat me out of house and home I couldn't imagine not having them.

I could live without my hairdryer and straighteners but I would look a mess 😂

And tech gadgets - my mobile phone for sure. It's my connection to friends and family, my diary, my camera, my social life.

My slow cooker. My diet has improved immensely as I'm a bit of a lazy sod and come home knackered from work and cba to cook, so was pretty much eating cheese on toast.

Not only does it mean tea is ready for when I fancy it, I also have a handy portion for lunch at work the next day.

This is a genuinely difficult question to answer. Electricity powers so many of the things that are, maybe not absolutely essential, but make such a difference to modern life.

Where would I be without my fridge freezer, washing machine, oven, kettle, dishwasher, toaster, coffee machine, hairdryer, straighteners, sewing machine. Not to mention laptop & phone! Life would be oh so very different without any of these appliances, I can't imagine life without any of them.

Except now I don't have to imagine life without my bloody tumble dryer, because it has finally given up the ghost, just in time for tumble dryer season. Brilliant.

Without a doubt it’s the washing machine. Can you imagine doing the washing the way they did around 50 years ago? Mine is on constantly!

Fridge! With kettle a close second

AdaColeman · 11/11/2017 17:06

I'd say my kettle.
I got a new one recently, jug shaped rather than the traditional shaped on I've had for decades, and I love it. So much lighter, boils so rapidly, it's got some measuring tabs inside so I can boil just one cup, so its economical too.
It's super to be able to have a hot drink in just a few moments.

Fridge.

Having stayed somewhere with no electric, the ability to store food is something we utterly take for granted in the UK.

Just imagine what its like in Puerto Rico or the still devastated Caribbean island with no way to keep meat, dairy or fish safe to eat for more than a few hours .....

PS
Based on how New Yorkers reacted when Hurricane Sandy took the power out for a million people for a week
1 - Fridge
2 - lights
3 - phone
everything else could be worked around

Washing machine and tumble dryer

Report
flamingtoaster · 11/11/2017 20:01

Very tricky! In terms of essential to daily life it would be the fridge and freezer. In terms of convenience it would be my little spin dryer which spins washing much drier than the washing machine does - I could, if I had to, cope with washing everything by hand but drying it would be a nightmare.

Report
AugustRose · 11/11/2017 20:01

If I had to choose one it would definitely be the kettle - boiling water in a pan just wouldn't be the same and takes too long. And sometimes I just can't wait that long for tea Grin
