For many, Autumn often symbolises a time to be with family, wrapping up, staying indoors with a good movie and indulging in our favourite comfort foods. The healthy living habits from summer can often take a backseat and, as a result, these cooler months can often put our health goals and weight loss journeys on pause. With that being said, Weight Watchers want you to share any funny autumn and winter healthy living pitfalls or triumphs you have gone through.

Zoe Griffiths, Head of Programme and Public Health at Weight Watchers, adds: “For many, the shift in season will bring with it a change in outlook. It’s a time when we start to notice that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is becoming be more difficult. In fact, working with psychologist Professor Geoff Beattie, we have identified that 18th September is the date when the seasonal shift begins to impact Brits’ lives. But just because the seasons have changed, doesn’t mean your outlook has to too. You are very much still in control of your own healthy lifestyle!”

"Weight Watchers has a plan to help avoid those pesky pitfalls all autumn long! Introducing… The Weight Watchers Guide to Owning Autumn. The Guide will be updated each week throughout the season to help counteract the seasonal shift and make it easier for people to take control of their weight loss journey and overcome the lifestyle challenges posed during the cooler season."

Zoe continues: “At Weight Watchers, we believe that you can say ‘yes’ to the things that you love and still enjoy a healthy lifestyle – any time of the year! That’s why with food, activity and wellbeing deeply engrained in our philosophy, we have designed the new Guide to Owning Autumn, which provides motivation, support and tips and tricks, so that you can enjoy the cooler seasons while showing autumn who is boss!”

Have you ever convinced yourself that colder weather calls for an extra glass of wine? Perhaps you’ve managed to fool everyone that you went to the gym by wandering around all day in your gym clothes, when actually they’re just so comfy? Or maybe you successfully managed to dodge all the chocolate that your kids collected at Halloween?

Whatever your healthy living pitfall or triumph, post them on the thread below. All MNers who comment will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky person will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Take a daily vitamin c & d to banish colds & compensate for less sun. Has never failed me, so really enjoy Autumn/ Winter

mollymoo818 · 20/09/2017 16:46

I actually find the Autumn and the Winter easier for eating healthier than I do in the Summer because when the weather starts to turn and get colder I think that there is nothing nicer than finding an afternoon and just batch cooking loads of delicious home made healthy meals that I can put in the freezer.

I also LOVE going for long walks in the Autumn before it gets too cold as there is nothing nicer in the world than walking through the park or the woods with the dog with the leaves crunching underfoot. Also if all else fails at least I can cover up better in winter coats :-)

mooota1514 · 20/09/2017 17:52

We've all just got activity trackers which are motivating us to get active.

IonaAilidh11 · 20/09/2017 18:01

winter means lots of homemade soups and suppers

roggy45 · 20/09/2017 18:13

I hate winter, dark nights and cold. It really is so hard to stay motivated and get out and have a run. Even manage to talk myself out of the parkrun. Wish i could go somewhere warm and sunny.

Kennylou12 · 20/09/2017 18:16

I tend to drink a lot less in autumn/winter as there is no sun to remove you outside and indulge in a glass of vino. I also exercise more in winter as it keeps you warm...I have been known to wear gym clothes for the comfort factor though!

scully1 · 20/09/2017 18:17

Autumn is definitely about putting on extra warmth-providing fat to get through the colder weather until Christmas. Off to continue in that vein with a jelly baby or two...

spottypjs · 20/09/2017 18:33

Porridge for breakfast is always good in the cold weather and plenty of soups in the evening, like a lovely butternut squash soup with some crusty bread!

thesockgap · 20/09/2017 19:01

The colder and darker it gets, the less happy I am to eat salads and grilled chicken etc, and the more I want to drown myself in comfort food such as stew with bread & butter - so it's no wonder I invariably gain weight every winter. Although this year I'm in a good exercise routine so I hope I won't gain quite as much as I have previously...

Sid98 · 20/09/2017 19:07

i go for walks

Ikea1234 · 20/09/2017 19:13

My cold weather triumph is taking vitamin C supplements. Working with children, there are always colds doing the rounds, and I always manage to avoid them! Just last week 6 members of staff succumbed, and I wasn't one of them! Hurrah!

vickyors · 20/09/2017 19:24

I'm not a fan of puddings or cakes, but my downfall is wine. As the evenings draw in, I literally get the kids to bed, do my marking, and at about 9 collapse with a massive glass of wine (or g and t). I don't find I gain weight though, because I eat a salad (if anything) for lunch and walk bloomin miles around campus each day.. but winter does stop my other exercise, as I run all summer in the long evenings.. hmmm. May look at local leisure centre gym membership..

emmmaaa26 · 20/09/2017 19:46

Lots of soups and stews. All the blankets, jumpers and hot water bottles come out and I live in my dressing gown at home.

gd2011 · 20/09/2017 19:46

Eat vegetable soups and stews. Warming, filling but not too fattening.

towser44 · 20/09/2017 20:00

Even though it is getting colder, we continue to make the effort to get out for a regular family walk

katastrophy13 · 20/09/2017 20:08

I'm the wrong person to ask, I can't stop eating! As soon as it gets a bit cold I just eat everything in sight, so I guess the trick is to stay warm!

LeeR1985 · 20/09/2017 20:31

I slack a bit around halloween eating chocolate and sweets with my daughter but I still get up at 6am to head the gym a few days a week regardless of the weather :)

littleme96 · 20/09/2017 20:39

Dog walking in the woods is one of my favourite things in the Autumn, but stodgy puddings are my downfall! Sticky Toffee pudding and ice cream in particular!

Signoritawhocansway · 20/09/2017 20:54

Autumn is soup time. Lots of vegetables, little fat. All fine, as long as you don't have too much bread and butter with it!

twinklenic · 20/09/2017 21:03

im terrible in the autumn / winter and tend to eat too much and not be at all healthy , kind of like stocking up for winter hybernation lol

Jade5093 · 20/09/2017 21:15

Dark cold days mean slow cooker food for us... love the warm homely smell it creates throughout the house

cheekychicken24 · 20/09/2017 21:19

My downfall is going too gung ho on making soup every autumn! I always make big vats of different veggie soups, and freeze them - I imagine us dashing into the house after a lovely walk in the frosty air, and sitting down as a family to homemade soup, and lovely crusty bread, and being super healthy.

The reality is big tubs of frozen brown sludge of indeterminate flavour and age at the back of the freezer, which get thrown away the following summer to make room for Magnum icecreams, while we go for a pub lunch on the rare days we make it out for a winter walk Blush Blush Blush

Narnianescape · 20/09/2017 21:21

I have managed to get back into my swimming

APJ1 · 20/09/2017 21:27

The cold weather makes me want to indulge in more 'comfort' food! All that bread and stodge.

gamerwidow · 20/09/2017 21:32

Winter stodge is my downfall, that and bingeing on chocolate at christmas
