Are you one of the 56%* of parents who have never heard of water warts? Or are you able to spot the symptoms of water warts? Do you have experience of them in your own children?

In case you didn't know, water warts are a skin condition most common in childhood characterised by raised spots which can look like small pearls under the skin - this can last up to 18 months without treatment.

MolluTinc is a new treatment for water warts now available from pharmacies. It is the only product available in the UK to contain 10% potassium hydroxide and works by breaking down the water warts on the skin and allowing the body’s own immune system to tackle the virus that causes them. Applied twice daily for 2-10 days, it can help clear water warts within 1-5 weeks. It is suitable for those aged one year and upwards. For more information, visit mollutinc.co.uk/

Here’s what MolluTinc has to say: "whilst water warts only affects 5-11% of children aged 16 years and under, over 11% of children affected will experience a severe impact on quality-of-life as a result of the condition - we would love to know what you know about water warts, how you cope with them and your own tips on how to avoid them"

Please share your experiences with this condition. If you haven’t heard of water warts, we’d also love to hear from you about how you imagine them to be. All who share their tips for coping with water warts or their experiences of it on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 John Lewis voucher!

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

Both of mine had them - DS was 11 and very self conscious. If there had been an effective treatment I would have used it!

mamof3boys · 10/08/2017 16:55

My middle boy had them for over a year. I had no idea what they were when he first developed them and had never heard of them. They never bothered him and the spots would come and go. I was just glad when they all cleared up. I wish I'd known of this treatment, but there didn't seem to be anything available at the time.

ThemisA · 10/08/2017 17:23

Only recently heard of them when a friend's daughter was diagnosed with them. I believe they are quite contagious. I shall tell her about MolluTinc in the hope that she will treat them and then we won't catch it!

IonaAilidh11 · 10/08/2017 17:27

never heard of them, but presume they go away in time

fld14 · 10/08/2017 17:47

I have never heard of them :0)

ArcheryAnnie · 10/08/2017 19:05

My DS had them on his thighs when he was little. We tried a few things early on that didn't work; in the end we just left them alone and they went away by themselves in a couple of months. After the initial "what the hell is THAT?" reaction, they aren't a big deal.

I have never heard of the term water warts, but familiar with molluscum , my child had them age 5-6 in the folds of his elbows, irritated for a couple of months but willl go, did treat a couple with bazucca but now many years later you can see scarring in the skin, my advice is leave well alone, let the body develop it's own immune response, it may protect them from other HP viral infections later in life

cheekychicken24 · 10/08/2017 19:57

Never heard of the term water warts before, although I was always under the impression that warts should be left alone. Perhaps it's different for different types. Luckily, none of us have ever suffered with warts of any kind.

dementedpixie · 10/08/2017 19:59

They aren't warts for a start

Minnibix · 10/08/2017 20:28

I have never heard or come across water warts, new to me

twinklenic · 10/08/2017 20:49

i have 3 children ages 18, 17 and 3 and have never heard of water warts at all

lhlee62 · 10/08/2017 20:52

I've never heard of them, but both of mine had molluscum all over their bodies. It was harmless enough and the doctor said it was very common and it just disappeared.

leemur · 10/08/2017 20:54

Never heard of water warts but have heard of molluscum. Two of my dc have these currently - one with quite a few all over and one with just a couple behind his knees. We've tried a couple of creams to get rid of them but with no noticeable success. I'm losing patience with trying different creams and will probably just wait it out.

emilybc · 10/08/2017 20:54

Never heard of it, sounds gross!

MrsGotobed · 10/08/2017 20:57

I've never heard the term Water Warts before.

My first thought was verrucas!

I have heard of molluscum contagium though but, as we haven't experienced them, don't know a huge amount about them.

Abominus · 10/08/2017 21:13

Never heard of them, food for thought though.

CMOTDibbler · 10/08/2017 21:16

My ds had molloscum which he caught from his friend. TBH I just left them alone and they went in time. He scratched at a few, and then they got infected, but soon healed

BasementPeople · 10/08/2017 21:23

They are called water warts in Dutch too [irrelevant]

Cailin7 · 10/08/2017 21:49

Never heard of this, none of our DCs have had this

nerysw · 10/08/2017 21:58

I'd never heard of them either!

RACHELSMITH45 · 10/08/2017 22:00

I've never heard of these?? I guess they'd look like verrucas or warts?

pfcpompeysarah · 10/08/2017 22:17

Never heard them described as water warts before, but my son had this for quite a while from the age of probably 6/7 until just recently at 10. He used to get really self-conscious of them, they were mainly on his arms on the insides and on his torso, we tried various creams (although the doctor said it would disappear over time) to no effect but I read somewhere that once you squeeze one and remove the inner 'pearl' the others start to slowly disappear and that was the case with him, he's been clear for some time now ... fingers crossed!

SamPotatoes · 10/08/2017 23:30

Youngest child had molluscum for over 2 years. I totally would have tried this- they weren't a mild thing for him- they used to become very red and infected and he used to have to go on anti-bs every time one burst. (He had horrendous eczema which contributed to them spreading so much.) As soon as one burst a new crop popped up so it didn't even help get rid of the bastard things. By the time we'd been going through the pain for 2 years I wold have been prepared to hand over our life savings for a cure.

Course I never would have found this treatment because I would have been searching for molluscum treatments rather than water warts Hmm

Quietvoiceplease · 11/08/2017 07:50

My children have all, at various times, had molluscum. The advice we were given was simply to leave them alone and, indeed, they did disappear over time. My experience was that children weren't bothered by them - they didn't hurt and they didn't really care they had them. On the other hand, I was more bothered by them because they were so visible and also - as the full name suggests - they are contagious. I did try and limit sharing of towels or touching of them, but it became impractical to completely 'police' the children to not touch each others arms or legs. However, my experience was simply to leave well alone and the skin healed itself. If they had been really big (I know some can become a cm or more), then I would probably have sought treatment.

I have never heard the term water warts before.

minceandpotatoes · 11/08/2017 08:07

I had heard of molluscum, but never heard of water warts before. Fortunately my dc never had this as it sounds horrible. I would look for a product like this to clear up the symptoms if my dc were affected.
