Most Mumsnetters are probably familiar with the concept of the lunchbox police - those whose job it is at your child’s school to ensure pupil’s lunchboxes meet a certain standard. The fact is, whether you like them or not, if there are lunchbox police at your DC’s school, you have to make sure your snacks comply with their rules. This being the case, Soreen want to know about your go-to recipes for healthy snacking that get past the beady eyes of even the toughest lunchbox police officer.

Here’s what Soreen have to say about their Lunchbox Loaves: "We know how hard it is to find a snack for school lunchboxes that’s both nutritious and tasty but Soreen Lunchbox Loaves strike that perfect balance. Available in Malt and Banana flavours with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.

If that wasn’t enough, Soreen Lunchbox Loaves are also suitable for vegetarians and meet guidelines set by the Children’s Food Trust for ‘School Foods Standards’ - so you should have no problem getting them past the lunchbox police."

To help other Mumsnetters branch out beyond bread sticks and yoghurt, tell us about your best lunch box recipes for the ultimate police-proof snacks. Post on the thread with your healthy alternatives to chocolate, crisps and cakes and you could be in with a chance of winning a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

all fruits and vegetarian wraps, cherry tomatoes and raisins for something sweet

Tanfastic · 22/07/2017 07:00

Luckily DS's school do not have lunchbox police but I do still try and send him with healthy snacks. He's gone off sandwiches at the minute so I've been sending him with slices of cheese and ham, small crackers, cut up cherry tomatoes and cucumber. He also normally has a yoghurt and a piece of fruit. The fruit always comes back, covered in yoghurt, gets rinsed under the tap, put back in the next day....and repeat Grin.

Fruit, nuts, cheese

glenka · 22/07/2017 07:31

They don't like sweet treats so they are quite happy taken lots of fruit as snacks. They usually take a mixture of fruit such as a banana and apple or orange.

nuts, raisins and bananas - alternate days

katastrophy13 · 22/07/2017 07:48

I take a wholemeal flatbread and smother it in almond butter, add a banana, roll it up and then cut it into slices so it looks like banana sushi. Make sure it's in an airtight container so it doesn't brown!

Well Olivia starts school in September & I had no idea about this so I'm hoping they allow cherry tomatoes because she loves, loves, loves them

vonniebab2 · 22/07/2017 08:25

Tuna, Cucumber and spring onion mini wraps! Baked!! They are Delish and they keep well in foil in the lunchbox!

southernsun · 22/07/2017 08:39

Popcorn for a healthier snack which feels like they are getting a treat.

janney3 · 22/07/2017 08:57

My kids usually have any fruit and veg cut into bite sized portions.
Homemade flapjacks, when I have time to make them.
Cubes of cheese and hard boiled eggs are also fairly quick to prepare.

janeyf1 · 22/07/2017 09:04

Yogurt, carrot sticks with dip, wholegrain crackers with cheese, a banana & mini flapjack

ThemisA · 22/07/2017 09:20

Cream cheese dip (onion soup in low fat cream cheese) with carrots, celery, pepper to dip and a few home made crisps.

Wholemeal/granary bread with egg mayo and cress

They area actually an idea I found on 'eat well for less' and are muffins with no added sugar, instead I add dried fruit, grated apple and carrot (the small ones which are sweeter) and a ripe banana to the muffin mix. I will make cupcake size muffins, as they cook quicker and are easy and quick to eat for the short time they have for lunch. Some of the mums have taken up my idea, and they have even made them during class to promote adding fruit/sweet veg in lieu of sugar.

Banana soreen bars fruit salads and raisens always go down a treat

Ganne1 · 22/07/2017 10:01

Spend time selecting the right ingredients, healthy yet tasty. I use couscous and vegetables a lot (plus ham maybe) for me, but things have to be a little craftier for the DC. Just make it look "bad for you" or make it in shapes that appeal.

Roraima · 22/07/2017 10:12

Fruit and veg( carrots; celery, which my kids loved) mushrooms, etc much before internet craze.

phillie1 · 22/07/2017 10:15

jandoc · 22/07/2017 10:25

CheckpointCharlie2 · 22/07/2017 10:30

Olive pots from Sainsbury's, sugar snap peas, carrot sticks, pancakes and greengages from our tree!
I love the rainbow egg idea as dd will only eat the white bit! Also I stick mini homous pots in with veg sticks. And the odd soreen!

shellywkd · 22/07/2017 10:37

My daughter loves wraps so we pack ours full of salad, flapjacks and crackers also help fill her lunchbox. A mini fruit salad always goes down a treat.

hiddenmichelle · 22/07/2017 10:50

Fruit salad in a small tub and carrot sticks and houmous - sorry not overly new!
