It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

They make so much mess we tend to stick to plain water to drink cereals bars or bananas if we HAVe to. Generally try and avoid them snacking in the car tho as I'm paranoid about them choking

keshimonster · 23/04/2017 20:44

anything that isn't sticky! Usually a sandwich and some crisps and grapes

hayleyjturner78 · 23/04/2017 21:17

Pom bears or something else soft and melt in your mouth like skips

tinkiiev · 23/04/2017 21:42

Soreen contains palm oil though, which is bad...

Car snacks - nothing or if on journeys of 2 hrs+, then brioches, bottles of water (due to high likelihood of traffic jams)

plavender · 23/04/2017 22:07

It's dried fruit for us - raisins, apricots and dates. Not too sticky, so no mess to clear up!

TLAF · 23/04/2017 22:19

We believe food should be consumed around a table not in the car. For the journey we only allow for drinks and some fresh fruit.

I tend to take whatever needs using up, it can sometimes be a bit random (cheese & radish sandwich anyone?). Fruit as it's refreshing, hydrating and healthy. I do buy single packs of things for carrying convenience - things like cereal bars and little packs of crackers are great for on the move snacking.

On long journeys we always stop for a proper picnic. Now our children are older we use the car bonnet or open the tailgate, depending on the weather. Tablecloth out and a couple of lovely fresh loaves of bread to cut up, several different cheeses, coleslaw, cornichons, tomatoes and chutney. Sometimes cold meats, sometimes hummous, sometimes cold pieces of home made pizza but always egg and bacon sandwiches made by cooking chopped pieces of bacon and then pouring well seasoned, beaten egg into the pan and cooking like an omelette. When cool, it's cut up and placed between buttered bread or rolls. We avoid fresh fruit as it is a wasp magnet and they are guaranteed to ruin anyone's picnic. Yes, I'll put in some Soreen mini loaves next time to try instead of the usual banana cake. We take large bottles of fizzy and still water and a set of plastic cups. Once finished, the tablecloth is shaken and several clean, damp dishcloths in a plastic bag are passed around. This suits our family of seven (and the extras we now have coming along) as it's cost effective, really tasty and fun.

For long journeys we have the full works, sandwiches, mini-sausages and scotch eggs. Plenty of treats like cereal bars, fruit and crisps. We always seem to get really hungry when we travel, its ridiculous, we barely leave town and we start on the food.

sootyo · 24/04/2017 09:19

Water and bite sized sandwiches.

kirstykovacs1 · 24/04/2017 11:02

we were once stuck in traffic for almost 7 hours with the 2 boys and I've never been so happy to have packed our snacks! I use their school lunch boxes and pack them with a bottle of water, sandwich, cereal bar or rice cake, banana/apple and a sweet treat if they've behaved!

SmileyShazza · 24/04/2017 11:36

Usually I don't offer snacks in the car as I worry about one of the kids choking and us not being able to help if we are driving at the time. There are occasions though where we have had to offer a snack because the kids have become very hungry on long journeys when we've been caught up in traffic delays and have been unable to get out of the car. Usually I keep fruit, small packets of crisps and breadsticks in a bag just in case we do happen to get caught in a mega jam when driving long distances.

howling · 24/04/2017 11:54

I always give them a banana or a slice of apple - hardly any mess.

jamielmdjs · 24/04/2017 11:55

Didn't know about the 'no crumb' loaves - will definitely give them a whirl.

Bananas aren't too messy so we normally pack those for a car snack before stopping for lunch.

marymanc · 24/04/2017 12:36

I always make sure my children have water and as snacks I would bring with me some cereal bars or baked products, yes, like Soreen. My children like me bringing something different every time.

sjl19 · 24/04/2017 12:53

We tend to take a bag a snacks if going on a long journey - things like bananas, brioche or crisps are a favourite with my two.

freedomofspeech · 24/04/2017 13:15

Fruit that doesn't have too much juice like apples and bananas. Also raisins. Always take a bag for skins and rubbish!

Nicola27 · 24/04/2017 13:42

I don't really like my children eating in the car unless it's a really long journey. I tend to pack food that doesn't get too sticky and cause a mess in the car. Also, I don't like the children to eat a lot of sweet food that makes them feel sickly. I usually pack bottled water, bananas, babybel cheeses, individually wrapped Soreen (original) bars or Nutrigrain bars and maybe mini cheddars.

wef1984 · 24/04/2017 14:15

We try not to eat in the car but if it's a long journey we will take some breadsticks/fruit for a half way stop.

joannecc · 24/04/2017 15:16

We tend not to snack in the car anymore, we had a spilt ice-cream disaster a few years ago and the car never stopped smelling like sour milk especially on hot days. If anything its bottles of water and we will stop for a bite to eat.

mumpetuk1 · 24/04/2017 15:58

Crisps and some sweets

katieskatie82 · 24/04/2017 16:33

fruit like bananas and grapes are always a good snack!

KavvLar · 24/04/2017 16:48

Crisps. Biscuits. Not very healthy here I'm afraid.

mrsc2807 · 24/04/2017 16:50

water , crisps , choc bars , cereal bars , easy to have on you and always good for the kids :) if longer journeys i make sandwiches for everyone :)

zebedee01 · 24/04/2017 17:36

I usually take bananas and cereal bars!
