It’s the season of holidays and day trips, and that means long car journeys where we have to keep the DC happy. One of the best ways to keep the DC as well as ourselves cheery on a long journey is to make sure we are armed with plenty of snacks. Whether you go for snacks that make the least mess or those that keep the little ones quiet for a while, Soreen would like to know your top snacks for long car journeys.

Here's what Soreen has to say: “Our Lunchbox Loaves - or ‘Glovebox Loaves’ Grin - are individually wrapped, healthy and best of all they don’t make crumbs! So are ideal for in-car snacking whether you’re heading to the countryside or the zoo. Available in Malt and Banana flavour with a satisfyingly squidgy texture, Lunchbox Loaves are individually wrapped, low in fat, contain only 95 calories and provide a source of fibre.”

So what are your tips for the snacks you take on car journeys? Do you chop up fruit and veg into small pots? Perhaps you have special treats just for car journeys? Or purely go for convenience? Whatever snacks you take with you, share them below and one Mumsnetter will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck.

I always like to take snacks with us in the car because if we ever get stuck in traffic there's always something to keep them happy until we can find somewhere to eat a proper meal.

Some things I take along with me are

Fruit, like blueberries are a favourite. Croissants, water, fruit juice, healthy snacks like organic fruit roll, organic fruit bars too.

I usually only give them snacks if they ask for them and that's not always since they only as kid they are really hungry.

Minnibix · 19/04/2017 15:57

I always take flavoured water but prefer not to take in car snacks my kids would have a field day in the back of the car pushing carrot sticks up each others noses and such like. So we stop off somewhere for a bite to eat, and if they have been good they get to choose what they would like, and then its off we go again.

NotAllItsCrackedUpToBe · 19/04/2017 16:58

Usually take a bag of mini cheddars but only if my ds is being picked up straight from school as he's always starving! We let him eat them quickly before we set off to avoid choking risk. Then we have a bottle of water or squash and if we get held up would grab some crisps or similar from a shop we pass.
The glovebox Doreen sounds a good option as a change from the mini cheddars as he loves Doreen and no crumbs sounds practical so will give it a go.

The only thing I would have in the car would be Sultanas to snack on, we would normally stop for a meal en route so do not eat much in the car.

Elizasmum02 · 19/04/2017 17:07

if its a long journey we just plan to make a stop somewhere to have a hot meal rather than a snack, i always carry nuts or seeds in my bag to munch on anyway and we always just take water with us as the kids are always thirsty

pardrej · 19/04/2017 17:18

I don't encourage eating in the car.

winewolfhowls · 19/04/2017 17:20

Usually left over picnic, seeing as there is already usually mud, sand, sticks, pine cones etc a few crumbs won't hurt. Try to avoid anything sloppy or sticky though, especially as my son is under school age so would make a mess.

rocketriffs · 19/04/2017 18:25

Maybe some mini scotch eggs or party size sausage rolls and a fruit salad of grapes, apple and banana if the kids are feeling hungry, but mostly we would eat out of the car at meal times and pull into somewhere serving food.

MagicAlwaysLeadsToTrouble · 19/04/2017 18:55

Another vote for breadsticks. My kids are awful moany car passengers after about an hour and I would much rather Hoover up breadstick crumbs than listen to endless moaning.

They never get get sick in the car so snacks work well on super long journeys. Things like cereal in sandwich bags are quite popular here and raw carrots and apples which they munch on whole.

rhinosuze · 19/04/2017 19:08

Breadsticks and carrot sticks are her journey obsession

Mozarmstrong · 19/04/2017 19:32

Definitely bottles of water or juice cartons Small bags of breadsticks little pieces of easy to eat cake. When you stop at services then eat fruit or sandwich Tec it's too difficult driving for little ones to eat lots for fear of choking

daisyduke66 · 19/04/2017 20:28

Snackpots of various fruit is always a winner and can be thirst quenching at the same time. I have to say all mine love Soreen and the mini loaves are a keen favourite and hugely convenient as a top snack!

Sleepysausage · 19/04/2017 20:37

Breadsticks, biscuits, or rice cakes are travel snacks in our family. We like them as they're not easily squished into the car seats or clothes! Tend to only be given on long holiday journeys though. Definitely not an everyday thing

buckley1983 · 19/04/2017 22:19

My LO has a lunchbox with different sections & enjoys choosing his snacks before we go on a long journey. There's usually some chopped fresh fruit, dried fruit, veggie sticks, a sweet treat (like biccies or a fruit bar) & a sandwich of some description.
I got terribly car sick as a child so used to rely on boiled sweets to keep the nausea at bay!

AskYaDad · 19/04/2017 23:27

Last weekend we drove 230 miles so I filled a Rainbow Trug with Bear Strings, Quavers, Crisps, Mini Cheddars, Chipstiks, a bag of grapes and a dozen 100ml cartons of apple juice. This, together with some cheese sandwiches, jaffa cakes and chocolate brownies, enabled us to survive the trip. Biscuit

I like small things in their own packets- means they don't eat too much and minimises crumbs!

Mamamoo15 · 20/04/2017 10:17

I don't drive, but often go on long journeys on public transport with my girls. My youngest LOVES the banana soreen loaves but I prefer the original. I often pick up the mini packs of butter too, and pop a couple of those in to spread on the original flavour. They are a staple in our journey snacks bag along with water, some fruit and then some sweeties to bribe the kids if and when necessary 😂

HannahLI · 20/04/2017 12:55

Being honest here I try and not do journeys that need snacks and plan our day making sure we eat just ahead and just after a big journey. However sometimes that doesn't work so I often grab raisins, although they are a bit annoying if they get squashed. They like fruit roll up type things and they usually don't make any mess so are a good option. I look for stuff that isn't going to melt and that will be able to sit in the car too without changing. I also like snacks that don't crumble!

everybodysang · 20/04/2017 13:33

If we're going on a long journey I do tend to keep snacks in the bag after one particularly nightmarish journey where we got stuck on a motorway for 10 hours when DD was four. Brrr...

Favourites are flapjacks, chocolate buttons, mini cheddars, breadsticks, clementines/satsumas.

Caillou · 20/04/2017 13:50

I try to avoid giving my children food in the car as it makes the car dirty, but if we are going for a long drive, we choose non messy ones such as Apple pieces or fruit puree in a pouch

babyann · 20/04/2017 16:21

we tend to take a bag of cheddars for each of them and a juice carton or if we're leaving really early in the morning they may have breakfast on route

GeorgeW78 · 20/04/2017 16:32

We take food on long journeys and stop somewhere to eat it (it's always in the boot so no temptation!). If the weather's nice we'll have a picnic, if not we eat in the car. We try and go somewhere that isn't the motorway services but needs must sometimes! Food wise we have the usual sandwiches/rolls/wraps (whatever was in the house!), salad items like cherry toms/carrot sticks, apple or banana etc. I might buy malt loaf or make some chocolate crunch or something. We adore malt loaf but it's more economical to buy one, slice, butter & glue two bits together per person than buy the individually wrapped type & there's less packaging to get rid of! I'm not against it but I've always done it that way!

dannydog1 · 20/04/2017 17:43

Just water and bananas for us

milliemoon · 20/04/2017 18:15

Normally just water and rice cakes but they don't often ask for snacks in the car. If they do then it's nothing too sticky or melty!
