Having earned themselves a Mumsnet Family Friendly gold award, Matalan understand how to provide a great customer experience for families. However, what you might not know is that for the past 3 years they have also been working in partnership with Alder Hey Children’s hospital in Liverpool, to fund a life-saving innovation centre, for much needed research into finding cures for childhood conditions such as arthritis, cancer and diabetes.

So far in a bid to raise funds, Matalan have run campaigns selling alphabetical scarves, beanie and bobble hats, and striped pyjamas - with lots of big name celebrities getting involved too!

Matalan say “The partnership between Alder Hey and Matalan has been going for 3 years now. Back in 2014 we set about raising awareness of the hospital charity and how even though they are a North West based hospital they are in fact one of the busiest children’s hospital in Europe - treating children from right across the UK. As well as driving awareness we committed to raise £1.5M towards the new research and innovation centre that would benefit children across the country and in some cases the world. In just 3 years we've already smashed that target, raising £1.6M.”

Now Matalan want to hear your thoughts on their campaigns so far, as well as hearing your ideas for what products they would like to see in stores next year to help raise even more money.

Do take some time to watch the documentary about one of the children that has been helped by the new research centre and to find out more. Share on this thread which have been your favourite of the Matalan & Alder Hey campaigns so far and why? Have you ever purchased any of these products in the past or would you consider doing so in the future? The team at Matalan are also keen to hear your ideas for their future campaigns, so please add to the thread below with your ideas for future projects.

Previous campaigns include Alphabet Scarves in 2014, Bobble vs Beanie in 2015 and Get your Stripes PJs in 2016

Add your thoughts on the campaigns to date and your ideas on what they can do this year and you will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will get a £300 Love2Shop voucher (which can be spent in Matalan and other stores!).

Thanks and good luck

yes I would like to give my anwer on the review

sjonlegs · 16/02/2017 06:13

A fantastic partnership for certain. Any business that supports a charity, healthcare, children and gives to the greater good is a winner in my book. I visit Matalan infrequently- mainly because there isn't a store terribly close to my home and as a carer of a child with profound special needs and a father with dementia time out to shop and indulge myself is limited.

I've always championed Matalan - for its competitive pricing and quality goods, and the way the staff have been with my children in store.

Well done Matalan, I'll definitely seek out your supportive pieces in future and may your partnership with Alder Hey be a long and profitable one.

I think the past products look great and I do buy things like cards and gifts specifically for the charity they support, but only if i need those products. My kids love initialled things and I always buy things like slippers, gloves, hats, gloves, onezies, hot water bottles, Christmas jumpers and Tshirts at that time of year, but would also be on the look out for drinking water bottles, key rings, stationery, socks, underwear, sweets, money boxes, hoodies and wellies.

ThornyBird · 16/02/2017 08:50

Why do the campaigns need to be short term/limited?

Hats and scarves can last a while but mine need new PJs regularly. We would have loved the striped PJs but missed them.

RedheadinCamelFlarge · 16/02/2017 08:54

I am aware of the campaign, but would only buy clothing items if they were fairtrade.

TiggersAngel7774 · 16/02/2017 09:34

Not seen anything about the campaign but think its fantastic they helping such an amazing charity.

Well done Matalan

cowgirlsareforever · 16/02/2017 10:10

That's a fair point about Fairtrade RedHead but can I just point out that Matalan are a very important employer in Liverpool. They are a huge success story in an area of real econominic deprivation and have kept thousands of families in employment for years now.

ha2el · 16/02/2017 15:21

I think that is a perfect charity for Matalan to support. And they have got the merchandising spot on with regard to appeal and desirability.

CatherineCawood · 16/02/2017 15:30

I wanted the scarf but they sold out so quickly. I did get the pj's this year for DS but had to order early to get them. I wanted some for me but they had already sold out. They are really nice and wash well and have kept their shape.

I think that the campaigns are really good and the quality of the items are good. I'm really happy to be supporting the cause.

misscherry · 16/02/2017 20:14

this is wonderful campaign. i would suggest cosy items such as robes and slippers for future.

sexyandsweet · 16/02/2017 20:15

i'm thinking onsies would be a good idea next year

missfab · 16/02/2017 20:17

what an amazing thing to do. my suggestions would be personalised items such as socks or bags would be very nice

EasterRobin · 17/02/2017 03:24

I'd not heard of this before, but it sounds great. I love ventures like this. Future products could be towel, bedding, slippers, blanket, bag, cuddly toy, t-shirt.

Jaderice21 · 17/02/2017 12:42

brilliant idea its nice to see a big corporation doing its bit aswellas us customers who choose to purchase these lovely charity items if we work togther we could fight alot :D

JulesJules · 19/02/2017 08:29

What great ideas - hadn't heard of them until now, but I particularly like the PJs.

Great idea to do things that can be bought as presents/stocking fillers

grannybiker · 19/02/2017 13:04

Aw, wish I'd known about this beforehand as I would have supported it!
Been into 2 different Matalans quite recently and not seen anything.
More "IN your face" campaign next time, please.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 19/02/2017 18:28

Grew up in the North West and Alder Hey hospital was always well respected.

I agree with other posters, adding something with 'Hey' on it would be good.

Otherwise, that stripped look would be good on socks! Socks are always easier to just wear novelty ones, than other clothing items.

ataraxia · 19/02/2017 21:13

I remember the alphabet scarves and the Bobbles vs. Beanie hat campaigns - both seemed well-thought out as they would appeal even without the added incentive of contributing to charity, simply by having an element of choice/personalized-style approach. I only saw them online though, not sure how prominent they were in store.

As others have said, perhaps try something summery? Or something like tea towels?

daisyduke66 · 20/02/2017 21:17

An excellent cause and well done Matalan on the campaign to date. Future ideas- perhaps logo t-shirts with colourful, fun designs/ logo sun visors/hats/badges/armbands. Many haven't heard of this campaign sadly so perhaps some further promotion too.

strawberrypenguin · 21/02/2017 06:19

It's great campaign that could be better publicised - I only know about it because of MN. Agree with others that stock levels for some of the products could be higher as well. Having had my DS treated at a 'super centre' hospital (not Alder Hey) children's hospitals are always something I'm happy to support

cluckyhen · 21/02/2017 07:26

What a super campaign but why have they not advertised it enough? I've never heard of it until today! This is certainly one that I will be on the look out for

Joyofscreamingjoy · 21/02/2017 13:16

I loved the striped Christmas PJ's because they were very reasonably priced & had matching dogs outfit to go with mum dad and baby. And I was so happy to support charity instead of buying cheap off eBay/china.
Could do a get your summer stripes campaign with beach towels / bags / kids swimwear/flip flops/ sunglasses etc

MarcoPolo7 · 21/02/2017 13:37

Alder Hey is an amazing Children’s hospital. A friend has been taking her little boy who was born with a severely deformed leg and foot for the last 8 years, and the treatment has been outstanding.

It's great to see a company like Matalan taking Alder Hey to their hearts and raising much needed funds. I support it 100% and would actively buy any Matalan products associated with the cause. I'll definitely be seeking them out on my next visit to the store.

Elliepurpleflower · 21/02/2017 15:39

I hadn't heard of this before but it looks like an amazing campaign. Multi coloured slipper socks would be loved in our home. I love the pj's though too!

becky004 · 21/02/2017 18:37

I think it is a brilliant partnership and a wonderful cause worthy of regular support.
