Having earned themselves a Mumsnet Family Friendly gold award, Matalan understand how to provide a great customer experience for families. However, what you might not know is that for the past 3 years they have also been working in partnership with Alder Hey Children’s hospital in Liverpool, to fund a life-saving innovation centre, for much needed research into finding cures for childhood conditions such as arthritis, cancer and diabetes.

So far in a bid to raise funds, Matalan have run campaigns selling alphabetical scarves, beanie and bobble hats, and striped pyjamas - with lots of big name celebrities getting involved too!

Matalan say “The partnership between Alder Hey and Matalan has been going for 3 years now. Back in 2014 we set about raising awareness of the hospital charity and how even though they are a North West based hospital they are in fact one of the busiest children’s hospital in Europe - treating children from right across the UK. As well as driving awareness we committed to raise £1.5M towards the new research and innovation centre that would benefit children across the country and in some cases the world. In just 3 years we've already smashed that target, raising £1.6M.”

Now Matalan want to hear your thoughts on their campaigns so far, as well as hearing your ideas for what products they would like to see in stores next year to help raise even more money.

Do take some time to watch the documentary about one of the children that has been helped by the new research centre and to find out more. Share on this thread which have been your favourite of the Matalan & Alder Hey campaigns so far and why? Have you ever purchased any of these products in the past or would you consider doing so in the future? The team at Matalan are also keen to hear your ideas for their future campaigns, so please add to the thread below with your ideas for future projects.

Previous campaigns include Alphabet Scarves in 2014, Bobble vs Beanie in 2015 and Get your Stripes PJs in 2016

Add your thoughts on the campaigns to date and your ideas on what they can do this year and you will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will get a £300 Love2Shop voucher (which can be spent in Matalan and other stores!).

Thanks and good luck

I used to watch a documentry years ago about alder hey hospital and they do so much good and they make the childrens stay as comfortable and fun as possible. The fact that matalan have been getting involved makes me see them differently and |I will definely be looking at their clothes section that will help alder hey.

glenka · 04/02/2017 08:29

I haven't heard of this before but it's a great way to raise vital funds for such a worthwhile cause.

maryandbuzz1 · 04/02/2017 08:37

I was not aware of the ongoing support of Matalan in the research and care that Alder Hey offers children and young adults. Having watched the video it is something that will stick in my mind especially in further advertising.
Possible ideas might be children's bed throws, tights, sun hats, or towels

jacqui5366 · 04/02/2017 08:38

I am a regular visitor to Matalan and always support the Alder Hey campaign, I have dressed my little ones in the scarfs and hats, I have had personal experience of Alder Hey, as my cousins daughter was a patient there being treated for a heart valve problem. I will always support the Matalan Alder Hey campaign, and always encourage my friends to support and donate this fabulous cause.

hiddenmichelle · 04/02/2017 08:51

I love the initiative. Great cause and I love stripes. My eldest child has the pyjamas and loves them

lizd31 · 04/02/2017 08:56

I think it's amazing. I lived in Merseyside for 10 years & stayed in a hotel for 15 months where the manager's daughter was being treated at Alder Hey hospital, she had a device in her throat that enabled her to speak, she was such a brave little girl. The staff there were amazing with her, it's such a worthy cause.

Lisapaige24 · 04/02/2017 09:08

I think the campaign could do with a little boost so far it's been great and I love the hats scarf and onesies but a bit more advertising say on radios or adverts and billboards ,Social Media could make it even more successful and get not just the northwest involved but the country Alder hey is a fantastic children's hospital and deserves lots of support. (Hey For Alder Hey)

janeyf1 · 04/02/2017 09:28

A worthy campaign, fully support it

Any big industry or corporation or even small sector that gives a hand to that minority that has a great need is entitled to admiration. I, personally, applaud any help offered to anyone who needs to have a fairer standard of living.

SirNiallDementia · 04/02/2017 09:47

I wasn't aware of the partnership or campaign until I read about it on Mumsnet. It's a great idea but needs publicising a bit more. I go to our local matalan several times a year and have never seen anything about Alder Hey in store.

The PJs looked great but were sold out in my local store so maybe more stock is required, there seems to be a big demand so more money could be raised from having more stock.

izbiz1988 · 04/02/2017 09:48

This is completely new to me but it is such a great idea!! I will definitely keep my eye out for these products and buy them when I can :)

TJCB68 · 04/02/2017 10:12

This is a campaign that everyone should get behind. Agree with the previous comment that something should be done to minimise the negative effects of money makers profiting on auction sites.

mo3733 · 04/02/2017 11:17

this is an exceptional campaign. alder hey is a fantastic hospital and thestaff there are amazing. help by a big organisation like matalan is invaluable andi will be supporting this campaign

MommaGee · 04/02/2017 11:25

I think they need to do more to publicise tbh as I'd never heard of it. I dont go in Matalan really (promixity more than anything) but I would have made an effort to buy these.
My DS spend a lot of time in Birmingham Childrens but if we lived a bit more North it could just have easily been Alder Hay. These hospitals all do amazing work and every penny thrown into research to help our kids is needed. I'll definitely try and keep an eye out for what comes next!
How about T Shirts and Jumpers but please make them sweatshirt style or wit buttons on the neck cos my son has a huge head!

LeeR1985 · 04/02/2017 11:35

I think its a great campaign, I regularly donate to alder hey hospital anyway as I've been there myself plenty of times as a child and my daughter has been there

iut044 · 04/02/2017 12:15

I am impressed with this heping to raise awareness and money .

AndNowItsSeven · 04/02/2017 12:29

I agree with the campaign, but why were the stick levels so low. It was very hard to get any pjs.

happysouls · 04/02/2017 12:31

This is wonderful, its good to see a company working so closely for a fantastic cause over a long period of time. Its a shame more companies don't get involved like this! Well done Matalan!

Mcstriving4leanie · 04/02/2017 12:38

I wasn't aware of the campaign either. I will also look out for it now.
I wondered if ready made book costumes might be an idea for world book day to raise funds.
Loved the idea of another Mner of a kindness advent calendar with chocolate.

tabbaz123 · 04/02/2017 12:48

What is not to like?? Fabulous that Alder Hey will receive this level of support from a national store. I will strive to do my bit by supporting such initiatives and I just hope that other national companies can be encouraged to do the same. Well Done Matalan!

RACHELSMITH45 · 04/02/2017 13:01

Great that this store has chosen this charity to support!! Me and friends did a sponsored run and raised hundreds for this charity, close to our heart as our friends 26 week born baby has had several life saving operations here! Absolutely amazing.

MrsFrTedCrilly · 04/02/2017 13:21

Firstly...way to go Matalan, very teared up after watching that. I was only vaguely aware of the campaign as I dont shop in matalan often and don't watch a lot of tv. I will definitely buy something, pyjamas, socks and swimming towels or fleece blankets would be my preferred items.
Kudos to Alder Hey too, amazing place, I wasn't aware that kids from all over the UK were treated there. We are s lucky to have an amazing NHS and all of the dedicated staff who work in it.
Heartfelt thanks to one & all.

farhanac · 04/02/2017 13:34

Great cause, love the work the staff do at Alder Hey

alsproject · 04/02/2017 13:46

Its great that they get involved to spread awareness of a good cause as with out it, the hospital may not raise funds for researching cures

Keletubbie · 04/02/2017 14:06

I've supported all of Matalan's Alder Hey campaigns. My nanny was a children's nurse there many years ago.

I particularly loved the PJs this year - our Christmas photo was me, my daughter, my siblings and the dog in our super stretchy deliciously comfy matchingPJs.
