Having earned themselves a Mumsnet Family Friendly gold award, Matalan understand how to provide a great customer experience for families. However, what you might not know is that for the past 3 years they have also been working in partnership with Alder Hey Children’s hospital in Liverpool, to fund a life-saving innovation centre, for much needed research into finding cures for childhood conditions such as arthritis, cancer and diabetes.

So far in a bid to raise funds, Matalan have run campaigns selling alphabetical scarves, beanie and bobble hats, and striped pyjamas - with lots of big name celebrities getting involved too!

Matalan say “The partnership between Alder Hey and Matalan has been going for 3 years now. Back in 2014 we set about raising awareness of the hospital charity and how even though they are a North West based hospital they are in fact one of the busiest children’s hospital in Europe - treating children from right across the UK. As well as driving awareness we committed to raise £1.5M towards the new research and innovation centre that would benefit children across the country and in some cases the world. In just 3 years we've already smashed that target, raising £1.6M.”

Now Matalan want to hear your thoughts on their campaigns so far, as well as hearing your ideas for what products they would like to see in stores next year to help raise even more money.

Do take some time to watch the documentary about one of the children that has been helped by the new research centre and to find out more. Share on this thread which have been your favourite of the Matalan & Alder Hey campaigns so far and why? Have you ever purchased any of these products in the past or would you consider doing so in the future? The team at Matalan are also keen to hear your ideas for their future campaigns, so please add to the thread below with your ideas for future projects.

Previous campaigns include Alphabet Scarves in 2014, Bobble vs Beanie in 2015 and Get your Stripes PJs in 2016

Add your thoughts on the campaigns to date and your ideas on what they can do this year and you will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will get a £300 Love2Shop voucher (which can be spent in Matalan and other stores!).

Thanks and good luck

I wasn't aware of this at all.

I would buy the products if I could afford them, were they available online? To go to our nearest Matalan wastes half a day. Sad

purplepandas · 05/02/2017 08:29

I had no idea about the campaign but don't often make it into Matalan. I fully support it and think it is a great idea. I agree with another poster who says communication about the campaign needs to be better.

kerryv · 05/02/2017 09:16

Brilliant charity to support. I was never keen on the initials on scarves etc but I love the pyjamas

Ferryfairy · 05/02/2017 10:30

I was unaware of the campaign until now, so job done Mumsnet! Alder Hey does a fantastic job, I will look for supporting merchandise in future.

hbakfam · 05/02/2017 11:04

Colourful, fun and for a good cause. What's not to like?

Doobydoo · 05/02/2017 11:38

Be good if they paid more into the Rana Plaza Disaster fund

phillie1 · 05/02/2017 11:58

great campaign, but needs to be better publicised. Not heard of it until now

Ikea1234 · 05/02/2017 13:04

Alder Hey does great work and (with a husband who works within the medical industry, and a premature baby who benefitted from the NHS massively when he was born) I have great respect for them. Any work that raises awareness, funds and support is not a bad thing. Here's to success!

Just a thought.....would it make it more relevant or memorable if the campaign had 'Hey!' In the title / strapline / logo....?

MiddleClassProblem · 05/02/2017 14:55

I had never heard of the campaign nor shopped at Matalan but a charity campaign makes me want to check it out

ell5454 · 05/02/2017 15:20

I love the campaign, Its nice to see a retailer partner up with such a good cause.

I bought a pair of the pjs last year, so more of the same would be good.

Cailin7 · 05/02/2017 15:55

Brilliant campaign and initiative and we managed to get 2 pairs of pyjamas. Did not see any hats though.

AngelwingsPetlamb · 05/02/2017 16:46

I love Matalan and as a nurse have nothing but total respect for this campaign - but I didn't know about it until I read it on mumsnet! I've only just been shopping in my local Matalan last week and I didn't notice any advertising in store for this campaign.
So I would say a massive thank you to Matalan, but also, if you don't currently have in store advertising I think it would be a great idea.
As far as products go the pj's are a great one, maybe slippers to go with them?
Thank you Matalan x

bugzie92 · 05/02/2017 17:23

Brilliant campaign, nice to see a business is stepping in and helping increase awareness and supporting a great charity! the products are great!

Marg2k8 · 05/02/2017 17:56

It is a pity that companies like Matalan have to bridge the gap for things that should be available through the NHS

CopperPan · 05/02/2017 19:03

We have loved the scarves and PJs in the past. I do agree though that this is something essential that should be funded through taxes and I would be more than happy to pay higher taxes that went towards something like this.

stefalfie11 · 05/02/2017 19:06

I wasn't aware of the campaign before now but I would definitely be interested in supporting it in the future - what a fantastic idea to raise awareness. I think it would be good to have a broach or other kind of pin to go on peoples jackets as this really raises awareness as other people will ask about them plus they can be worn all year round unlike a christmas jumper.

LexieLulu · 05/02/2017 19:17

Whatever they bring out, please get more stock! Struggled to find any pj's last year Sad

mave · 05/02/2017 21:27

Fantastic! I live in North Wales, so not that far from Liverpool and have known lots of friends children treated at this amazing hospital!

emiai · 05/02/2017 21:40

del2929 · 05/02/2017 23:10

this campaign this year was very personal to us since our baby underwent heart surgery aged 4 weeks old back in july 2016

i have previously purchased charity items ut this years campaign meant alot since we stayed at alder hey and experienced first hand how good the hospital is!

future ideas could include
advent calendars
keyrings

sbruin1122 · 06/02/2017 00:02

Great video! Must follow them on social more!

littlewoodentrike · 06/02/2017 09:11

I love the campaign, and the clothes are lovely, but really hard to come by! They definitely need to make more! I wanted the PJs for my whole family and couldn't get any!

cowgirlsareforever · 06/02/2017 09:14

Further to what I have already posted, I also think that Christmas bedding would be very popular, as would earrings and charm bracelets.

voyager50 · 06/02/2017 12:51

I didn't know about this campaign before but I have only recently moved to somewhere near a Matalan so I may hear more about it now.

The partnership seems to work well but it sounds like there needs to be more availability of the products in store to make it even more successful.

How about having blankets, plastic plates and cups for picnics in the summer and maybe some baseball caps. Or is the shop sales part of the campaign only done in the winter?
