Trainline is developing a new days out tool to help with finding new places to visit and they’d love to know which family days out you’re planning this year, and – if you’re going by train – how you plan on entertaining your children on the journey.

They also want you to get involved with helping them to shape their new tool - you can suggest new attractions to be included in the tool using the “suggest” button.

Here’s what Trainline has to say: “At Trainline we’re always looking for ways to make journeys smarter. Clare Gilmartin our CEO, is a mother of three, and keeps us focussed on our customers by reminding us that “it’s the little things that make a big difference”, from saving a few minutes by using a mobile train ticket to getting a great deal using the best fare finder, and this is the ethos that we have at the heart of what we do. Our latest days out tool helps you to find and plan a day out by train, just in time for the summer holidays, but we want your ideas to take it the extra mile.”

So, whether you’ve got educational trips or adventure filled days planned for the summer holidays (and beyond!), let Trainline know about them and your train journey entertainment tips below.

All those who share a day out or tips for entertaining children on the train below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher from a store of their choice (from a list).

Please note that the days out tool is new and development of it is still underway. Some less popular train routes haven’t been added yet, but will be with time. There will also be more attractions added so please make suggestions on what you’d like to see next. Additionally, if you live in London please search from a mainline station to get the best results.

Thanks and good luck

We got some trips planned and are going on the train to visit a museum.
I like to pack lots of fun activities to pass the time and we have an activity where we cross of things which we see and the kids love it as it keeps them entertained.

We are planning to go to at bristol, the science musuem in bristol which the kids are so excited about! We will go by train using the family railcard so lots of money saved doing it that way and much more freedom because we dont have to worry about parking for the car or paying ridiculous prices to park it.

We have a trip to Alton Towers planned with an overnight stay at their hotel/waterpark... This always makes the longer journey for us worthwhile and makes its more a of weekend away style trip :)

Book a forward facing seat with good views through window, near to toilets and take lots of snacks. Also table seat 4 four is a good idea.

We visited the All Things Wild Centre near Evesham yesterday. I don't think you can get very close to it by train - but it's great if your kids like wild animals and dinosaurs.

taking along a sectioned lunchbox (one of those craft boxes seems to work really well) lots of individual nibbles and plenty of pens and paper so they can draw things they are seeing on the journey. Great app tool sounds like something we need

Trip out to Llandudno for the day! Hopefully it won't rain!

We have recently got national trust membership so lots of our days out have been to national trust properties, which are mostly a bit off the beaten path. However, we also regularly take the train to York and Harrogate for a spot of lunch and shopping. Looking out the window is enough entertainment for my little man at the moment!

We are off to Paignton Zoo next week. My daugter is obsessed with Baboons we spent nearly an hour just watching them play last time she went. It will be a long day.

ambieharmony · 06/08/2016 12:25

This summer holidays we have a few trips planned.
My oldest son is obsessed with trains so I have promised we can go to Liverpool on the train so he can see them all at Lime Street station and whilst we're there we will visit the museum to look at the dinosaurs and bugs. We plan to go fruit picking and visit the animals at our local farm too.
We also hope to go to the zoo as a family if my husband can get the time off work.

Going to sea front at Liverpool for the day should be good day out and takes less than a hour by train .

happysouls · 06/08/2016 13:03

The best days out on the train from here are to head into Manchester for a day trip. There are lots of things to do and see there but the best is probably the Museum of Science and Industry! Fantastic place with so much to see!

feefeegabor · 06/08/2016 13:04

We are lucky enough to live in Poole, Dorset with the coast just a short distance away and the New Forest a car journey. We have lots of days on the beach planned - the kids love taking a picnic and playing games on the sand. We also have a couple of day trips to London planned with the cheap return fares offered by our local Rail company.

Rfsev1 · 06/08/2016 13:31

We have a day trip on the train to London planned for september. I'm going to make 'I spy' type sheets of things we might spot on the way, some easy, some a bit more tricky. Hopefully that should keep everyone amused and smiling on the journey, fingers crossed!

We will be driving to warner studios to see the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

kenshutt · 06/08/2016 15:15

Got a weekend in London planned, to take a child on the London eye and the frogs tours Thames trip. Will be getting there by train, but will need to book a hotel as weekend rail works make it difficult to do this in one day with a small child.

ell5454 · 06/08/2016 15:24

We're planning to take a trip to Brimham rocks with a picnic! On the train, we usually go for the classic eye spy, but also reading book and colouring.

julieef · 06/08/2016 15:30

taken to Folly Far. The Beach to watch the Airshow, Walks along the costal path, cycled around the cycle path, and visits to the Library

BL0SS0M · 06/08/2016 15:35

love getting the train with the kids as its less stressful than driving and the kids see it as an adventure! love the scenic trips near the coast! best thing to bring for my kids is def where's wally books keeps them busy when they start to get bored instead of colouring as the pencils end up everywhere!

Leiajulie · 06/08/2016 15:44

the ark farm, belfast zoo and the fun W5 at the Odyssey arena

pusinky · 06/08/2016 15:53

We do some trips in London - trips to the science museum and Kew gardens

GREATAUNT1 · 06/08/2016 16:10

We're decorating .... so family days out will include much shopping at places like IKEA, Homebase, B&Q ....

padleys · 06/08/2016 16:45

We have a couple of days out planned, where we will need to go by train, the children love it, but they do soon get bored, i usually take books, crayons etc, but i dont like to cart everything round with me, so the train journeys are usually short ones. I have found it in the past to get seats with tables difficult and depending when we book our train it can work out very expensive.
