Trainline is developing a new days out tool to help with finding new places to visit and they’d love to know which family days out you’re planning this year, and – if you’re going by train – how you plan on entertaining your children on the journey.

They also want you to get involved with helping them to shape their new tool - you can suggest new attractions to be included in the tool using the “suggest” button.

Here’s what Trainline has to say: “At Trainline we’re always looking for ways to make journeys smarter. Clare Gilmartin our CEO, is a mother of three, and keeps us focussed on our customers by reminding us that “it’s the little things that make a big difference”, from saving a few minutes by using a mobile train ticket to getting a great deal using the best fare finder, and this is the ethos that we have at the heart of what we do. Our latest days out tool helps you to find and plan a day out by train, just in time for the summer holidays, but we want your ideas to take it the extra mile.”

So, whether you’ve got educational trips or adventure filled days planned for the summer holidays (and beyond!), let Trainline know about them and your train journey entertainment tips below.

All those who share a day out or tips for entertaining children on the train below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher from a store of their choice (from a list).

Please note that the days out tool is new and development of it is still underway. Some less popular train routes haven’t been added yet, but will be with time. There will also be more attractions added so please make suggestions on what you’d like to see next. Additionally, if you live in London please search from a mainline station to get the best results.

Thanks and good luck

We've had more than one day out to Clapham Junction this summer to enjoy the trains. We didn't leave the station, and there are a lot of train drivers prepared to return the enthusiastic waves of a three year old, and a lot of commuters prepared to indulge a roar of "tickets please"

My son has just come out of hospital, so were house bound for two weeks, trying to keep him entertained. When he's feeling better we plan to go to London for the day, to the Natural history museum. We homeschool our two children, and weve wanted to take them there for a while. Fingers crossed he's feeling better for the trip. Were take there kids VTECH Innotabs to make the journey go a bit quicker and maybe some colouring and snacks of course.

We've been to the York train museum and part of the adventure for DD was going on the train there as well.

Right now I go out pokemon hunting with my daughter. We have a blast doing it! We are also going to make a trip to the zoo sometime over the summer hols :)

kittykomp · 06/08/2016 19:49

days at the zoo, at the park and to the beach in South end

clairesamuel · 06/08/2016 21:15

Colouring in is fun on the train, as well as looking at books. We also like looking out of the window and seeing what we can spot.

WarmHugs · 06/08/2016 21:19

We are going to the beach by train, as it's much easier than parking the car!

I have printed some travel bingo sheets off to keel the DC busy on the train.

farhanac · 06/08/2016 21:49

Edinburgh castle and zoo

We went on the Isle of Wight steam train last week. Our DDs loved it! We've also been on the coastal steam railway in Devon. We get points for spotting things like cows, horses, tractors, tunnels, bridges etc. We often catch the train to the Thinktank in Birmingham as it's so handy and makes it feel like a real day out.

pfcpompeysarah · 06/08/2016 22:15

We might do a trip to London but most days out will be local, luckily we live near the sea so we can spend some time at the beach, and I definitely think we might fit in a picnic and a visit to the cinema to see Finding Dory followed by a nice pizza in a restaurant on the wharf.

lhlee62 · 06/08/2016 22:30

We have been going to the local park almost every day as the kids love playing in the playground and feeding the ducks, but they are nly 2 and 4, I'm sure they will tire of the same thing all the time. I have tried going further afield and the trains would be great fun.

jenhegarty · 06/08/2016 22:51

I'm hoping to take my little boy, who's 3 months old, on his first train trip to york soon so he can accompany me to Betty's tea rooms. I doubt I'll get away with it for much longer as I doubt tea rooms will be his favourite outing activity!

Jesswoods1992 · 06/08/2016 22:57

Tick options for types of daytrip you want nature, history, activity etc.

evieclarkson · 07/08/2016 01:58

colouring books to entertain kids on trains!

joangray38 · 07/08/2016 02:00

Day out tool looks good but could be improved by including age/ how many/ accessibility etc . Also a space for customer reviews/ tips/ pictures. We are planning a day down to London - booked in plenty of Time to take advantage of cheaper tickets and plan on visiting the NHM, Kensington gardens and Harrods for ice cream .

Andbabymakesthree · 07/08/2016 08:00

Day trip to Falmouth and St Ives planned. If you have no commitments to return for its a really stress free way of travelling with children. No traffic jams and you get to response children easily.

TJCB68 · 07/08/2016 08:11

Local maize maze, shopping for new school stationery, heritage steam railway.

carolineandryanandseb · 07/08/2016 08:13

We are planning to take our 4yo son to the South Lakes Animal Park as he is really into penguins atm and you can feed them there! Hopefully we will be going this week to combine it with my birthday :)

We are off to London to see a show - expensive, but should be worth it and it is something we are all looking forward to! The days out tool sounds great and is something I will be investigating for future trips.

We take the train when we go to London and have lots to keep the kid's occupied - books, new iPad apps and some Usbourne wipe clean activity cards.
