Trainline is developing a new days out tool to help with finding new places to visit and they’d love to know which family days out you’re planning this year, and – if you’re going by train – how you plan on entertaining your children on the journey.

They also want you to get involved with helping them to shape their new tool - you can suggest new attractions to be included in the tool using the “suggest” button.

Here’s what Trainline has to say: “At Trainline we’re always looking for ways to make journeys smarter. Clare Gilmartin our CEO, is a mother of three, and keeps us focussed on our customers by reminding us that “it’s the little things that make a big difference”, from saving a few minutes by using a mobile train ticket to getting a great deal using the best fare finder, and this is the ethos that we have at the heart of what we do. Our latest days out tool helps you to find and plan a day out by train, just in time for the summer holidays, but we want your ideas to take it the extra mile.”

So, whether you’ve got educational trips or adventure filled days planned for the summer holidays (and beyond!), let Trainline know about them and your train journey entertainment tips below.

All those who share a day out or tips for entertaining children on the train below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher from a store of their choice (from a list).

Please note that the days out tool is new and development of it is still underway. Some less popular train routes haven’t been added yet, but will be with time. There will also be more attractions added so please make suggestions on what you’d like to see next. Additionally, if you live in London please search from a mainline station to get the best results.

Thanks and good luck

We are just starting out on family days out this year as DS is ten months old and starting to enjoy visiting places. We've done quite a few in central London which is about 35 minutes' train ride away and now we're planning a day out to the seaside, probably on the north Kent coast, so he can paddle as he loves the water. Not sure which beach yet but we'll probably take the bus into Bromley and the train from there.

DS is a real grump in the car but lovely on the train. During the journey he usually had a feed and a nap so he is wide awake when we get where we're going but really the train itself and the moving stuff outside the window is enough to entertain him. I love train trips so maybe he gets it from me!

The beach, country parks a few museums and some crazy golf.

We like to go on the train to Birmingham and Cardiff from where we live. We now do Geocaching as a family so enjoy getting the train to small stops and finding the caches around there.

We are going on the train to the Edinburgh Fringe as we do this every year. We don't book any shows as we just see what is on offer on the day. There is always loads of young people handing out leaflets for shows and many of them are free and suitable for kids.
It's always a fantastic day out and the kids just love it.

We're planning a trip to Eastbourne to see family and the Towner Art Gallery. Meeting friends in London to show them the sites. Also sending the teen to Manchester by train for a long weekend with her Aunty (her first solo return train trip!).

We have a few days out planned to local museums and also eureka, all of which we will be going via train! My two love the trains and get very excited about them! (must get it from their trainspotting Grandad!)

I usually give them a list of things to tick off on our journey and if they find them/see them all they mark it down and get a little pressie at the end of the journey. :-)

We are planning a day trip to the seaside aberystwyth is only 1 train ride away for us as traveling with a teenager a teenager and a 7 month old is an absolute nightmare. We love the fact that there are lots of lovely places to eat in aberystwyth and the beach isn't too far to walk from the train station it's a win win in my book!! Buckets and spades at the ready!!!

Having recently been on a (very budget!) girlie trip to London with my best friend, I want to make the most of the cheap fares! We managed to get to London from Newark & back for £26 return - bargain!
Would love to take my LO to London for the day to see the sights, experience the hustle & bustle of the big city & have a ride on the underground!
Also on our 'to do' list is a weekend to York & a trip to Stratford. It's such a treat not having to drive & to be able to dedicate my time to entertaining my LO & seeing his little face light up when he gets on & off the train, meets the ticket collector, etc. It never gets old! :)

Trip down to Edinburgh to visit the castle & zoo always a winner :)

thesockgap · 11/08/2016 11:34

We have had a couple of days out so far, one to North Wales and one to a local National Trust property. Both times we went in the car as it would be too much messing about to go on the train. However, we are planning a day trip to London on the train before the end of the holidays. It's only a 2 hour journey so when we did it last year we just let the kids bring their ipads / phones to play on, and we were there before we knew it!

Isis1981uk · 11/08/2016 14:51

My son doesn't need entertaining on the train as he is so excited to be on it & look out of the window! I usually make sure I have a book just in case.

johnchapman1986 · 11/08/2016 15:34

We head off to the Scottish Highlands next month! I intend to do day trips to Loch Lomond, Loch Ness and Ben Nevis!
