Trainline is developing a new days out tool to help with finding new places to visit and they’d love to know which family days out you’re planning this year, and – if you’re going by train – how you plan on entertaining your children on the journey.

They also want you to get involved with helping them to shape their new tool - you can suggest new attractions to be included in the tool using the “suggest” button.

Here’s what Trainline has to say: “At Trainline we’re always looking for ways to make journeys smarter. Clare Gilmartin our CEO, is a mother of three, and keeps us focussed on our customers by reminding us that “it’s the little things that make a big difference”, from saving a few minutes by using a mobile train ticket to getting a great deal using the best fare finder, and this is the ethos that we have at the heart of what we do. Our latest days out tool helps you to find and plan a day out by train, just in time for the summer holidays, but we want your ideas to take it the extra mile.”

So, whether you’ve got educational trips or adventure filled days planned for the summer holidays (and beyond!), let Trainline know about them and your train journey entertainment tips below.

All those who share a day out or tips for entertaining children on the train below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher from a store of their choice (from a list).

Please note that the days out tool is new and development of it is still underway. Some less popular train routes haven’t been added yet, but will be with time. There will also be more attractions added so please make suggestions on what you’d like to see next. Additionally, if you live in London please search from a mainline station to get the best results.

Thanks and good luck

I have 4 children ages 14,7,5&4 and I'll be honest the 14 year old is hardest to entertain Hmm

Yesterday we travelled to comic con by train and he asked me at every station, there and back, how many were left Angry luckily for me it wasn't a busy train so I moved and pretended I didn't know him Grin

We have a few trips planned, Blackpool, gullivers, local farms and a trip to Morecambe.

I'll be packing paper, pencils, colouring books and a few little travel games.
If all else fails I'll pack some cards and teach them to gamble some card games if we can get seats with a table.

We're taking a week out of work to take the kids out on day trips around the East Midlands. So far, we have planned a day out at Drayton Manor, Twinlakes and more local activities such as a trip to the park and swimming.

seeingdouble2 · 07/08/2016 22:38

we are kind of fly by our pants and go with the wind. A lot of factors can disrupt pre arranged trips, so we tend to go day by day. Hopefully we will get some lovely trips in, like petting zoo's and hopefully a day at the sea side!

Tkw2014 · 07/08/2016 22:52

We are off to Cbeebies land in Alton Towers, that'll be our biggest day out this summer. Other than that a boat trip and the zoo!

amanda08 · 07/08/2016 23:36

We have a lovely day out in Nottingham planned as we will be going for my cousins wedding :)

samosh22 · 08/08/2016 07:10

Going to the beach on hot days

mo3733 · 08/08/2016 07:20

we dedicate two days a week during the summer holidays for days out. the children get to chose where to go and alternate.

We have just been to Bournemouth on the train for the weekend. Although I can drive getting the train takes the stress out of motorways and traffic and my little girl loves it. We are also planning to go to Bristol zoo and London

We go to London every school holidays usually. As we live in Hampshire it's quite a big deal for us. We usually trade in some reward vouchers to have a meal out, and even if we do some free activities (can recommend The Bank of England for kids, it's brilliant....yes, really!) this all helps keep the cost down so it doesn't have to cost a second mortgage!

Planned a trip to the seaside in Hastings and to the Sealife centre in Brighton on the train. Will also pop up to London for a day to have a ride on the london eye.

Water park in the New forest, followed by a picnic

Maddaddam · 08/08/2016 10:59

Last family day trip was a day to Bristol to visit niece at uni. We went to the zoo, then dinner out around the Waterfront.
On the train - mine usually read or listen to music on their phones now, but when little they carried rucksacks with toys, snacks, magazines bought at the station.
Top tip. do not fill backpack with expensive Sylvanian family and let 7yo leave them on train. It costs a lot to replace. Stick with cheaper plastic toys that don't matter if they get lost.

kamaxtra · 08/08/2016 11:00

Off to Kew Gardens next weekend - it's so lovely in the summer there. We're going to bring some picnic snacks and sit outside for lunch. It's a great place to lie down and spot planes, too.

Pmliu · 08/08/2016 13:00

we going to LEGOLAND Windsor in September and Disneyland Paris, can't wait, the kids don't have a clue what fun and excitement is coming but I am very excited for them to be taking them to Disneyland Paris for the very first time.

kittylover · 08/08/2016 15:54

I always book my tickets in advance as i find it works out a bit cheaper , to keep the kids entertained i always take drinks and snacks and thing for them to do so colouring books and pens i also load the i pad with films for them to watch keeps them occupied

CassetteTape · 08/08/2016 16:34

we do use the train line to plan trips in the summer, always a day to london, but we had an adventure last week with a trip to cardiff with a day out to swansea in the middle... I would like to go to birmingham next.

simone12345 · 08/08/2016 16:47

AnneElliott · 08/08/2016 17:03

We've got a trip to Portsmouth planned by train. DS usually takes his iPad on journeys, but he loves trains so will look out of the window the whole way.

sealight123 · 08/08/2016 21:31

We love to travel to Saltburn to see family :)
It is a lovely seaside own with lovely woodland walks, parks, the cliff-lift and the pier :)

It sounds a but plain but we love it every time.

As we travel down on the train we also have a special backpack packed full of snacks and little toys and activities for the journey. A good ol' notepad and pens are always a winner too!

SillyMoomin · 08/08/2016 22:08

Love the train, always want to recite the Robert Louis Stevenson poem when I hear the "clickity clack" of the rails!

Planning an October half term trip up to Scotland, a long journey, so will be packing activities separated into different "stages"

  • the wide awake stage at the beginning; eye spy games, mini jenga for the table, card games etc
  • the "it's time you should be calming down now and shhhhh-ing" stage; audio books with headphones to lull them into a semi sleep so when we reach our destination just have to lift into taxi then into hotel bed.

Planning on making use of the bigger toilets on the long trains to change the DC's into their pj's prior to arrival too!

BiscuitMillionaire · 08/08/2016 22:16

We'll be going to the Eastbourne Air Show by train. It would be crazy to try to drive with the huge crowds and lack of parking, train is much more relaxing.

For entertaining the kids on the train, the simplest ideas are the best: play the doodle game. One person draws a squiggle, the other person has to make the squiggle into a picture of something. Then swap over. Hours of fun!

sweir1 · 08/08/2016 22:31

we're off to alton towers this weekend
