The end of the school year is fast approaching, (or perhaps already here for some of you), and notonthehighstreet.com are keen to hear how your children show appreciation to their teachers at the end of the school year.

Here’s what notonthehighstreet.com have to say: “Whether you're overjoyed about the little one's grades or just want to say thanks for coping with a whole class of kids, we've hundreds of brilliant gift ideas that'll leave teacher smiling 'til next term”

Visit this page they have pulled together with ideas for teachers gifts and tell us which ones you think your child’s teacher would love to receive (and you’d love to give!) by leaving a comment below.

Teachers of Mumsnet, we know you might well say no gift is necessary but if your arm was twisted, we’d also love to know what your ideal end of year gift would be.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 notonthehighstreet.com voucher!

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw!

At my son's school, one of the parents kindly runs a collection of £10 per family. The money is split between teaching staff and lunch supervising staff. Small gifts are purchased. I also buy something small and this year, I have purchased engraved rulers! They say 'Mrs (surname) you rule' 'from (child's name)'. I thought they'd be useful too!

Nice homemade card

cluckyhen · 10/07/2016 11:01

Our schools do not like gifts to be brought in and I personally have no idea where the concept came from to give teachers gifts for doing the job they chose but my children do like to write a thank you card when they move classes and teachers which I think is nice.

I love handmade presents above any monetary gift so my DD always makes something personal and it is always well received...

shellywkd · 10/07/2016 11:06

My daughter shows her appreciation by always being respectful and polite during the year. Her teachers appreciate that much more than a box of chocolates. She always gives them a handmade card at the end of the year as well.

As a former teacher with a cupboard full of 'best teacher in the world' tat (each one received with cries of delight and surprise, may I add!) I helped mine to make their own cards and personalised iced biscuits then added a bottle of wine.

alsproject · 10/07/2016 11:28

We don't give gifts but do send a thank you card

bambooleaves · 10/07/2016 11:46

Home made gifts that link to something they've done in the school year always seems most thoughtful to us Smile

rachelmi · 10/07/2016 11:51

Usually a bottle of wine.
( Definitely NOT chocs, as a teacher myself you get inundated with boxes so usually gave them away to friends. My friend, a fellow teacher got a pair of shoes which was quite usual! lol )

My children make their teachers a card

scrivette · 10/07/2016 12:07

We did a class collection (suggested donations £3-£5) and got the teacher and TA some lovely jewellery relevant to the name of the reception class they were teaching.

I will also get DS1 to make a card and I will write a thank you inside.

Last year my daughters class clubbed together and bought the teacher a lovely backpack as we knew she liked walking. She was made up! However, I do agree that the pressure for teacher gifts is mad and I think has got out of hand!

samcornfield · 10/07/2016 12:28

Mine just say thank you. I don't agree with buying gifts for teachers. I am a teacher and love to get a home made card or just for a pupil to say thank you to me.

A flower pot in school colours added handmade poem about thank you for helping me grow, add some seeds of the flower of child's birth month then a butterfly ornament as in the poem I had spoken about giving my child wings also love heart wweets and lots of other bits. All presents were related to the poem I had written. That was my best effort. I've got progressively lazier as the years have gone on 😄

RACHELSMITH45 · 10/07/2016 13:01

Cakes always go down well, I think we'll get some nice personalised ones.. it's just a little gesture to say thankyou really.

Clairescottshug · 10/07/2016 13:33

My daughter makes her teachers cards and writes little personal letters Smile

Maclairey · 10/07/2016 13:45

My children havent started school yet but when my son starts next year I will be encouraging him to thank his teacher for help. I think cards are a nice way to show appreciation and gratitude. However I think that over the top presents are well over the top. Fair enough if you want to buy a box of chocolates or something but some people get really silly and ultimately as long as your kids are well behaved, have good attendance and pay attention then I cant really see the need for a big gift to say thank you for ultimately doing their job.

freefan · 10/07/2016 13:54

My children make their teachers a thank you card. I'm a bit cynical on this giving of presents as they are getting paid to do a job, the same as your postman, the cashier in the supermarket that you always get and at no time do you feel the need to buy them a present.
Maybe I'm just stingy lol but feel that in this day of people really struggling financially that it shouldn't be something that is just expected.

littlemonkeyz · 10/07/2016 14:20

A heartfelt thank you is always welcome but I think it should be school policy not to allow gifts. It is even more rewarding when you get to see an ex student who is pleased to see you and remembers you as a positive influence in their life. That is the best gift!

pcump84 · 10/07/2016 14:52

Teachers set me up for life by investing in me! I will always be grateful!

katyj182 · 10/07/2016 14:56

I teach reception and can honestly say the best gift is an appreciative message of thanks from the parents!

Annbunce · 10/07/2016 15:19

A homemade card and usually a nice plant for their garden.

KAKADU2001 · 10/07/2016 15:22

Don't agree with presents as the Teachers are they are well paid and it was their choice to go into this profession. Seeing kids under their control flourishing should be enough thanks for the Teachers. Also some kids may not be able to afford to buy the Teacher's presents.
