Hotel Transylvania 2 have asked us to find out what the most bizarre advice is Mumsnetters have ever received from their parents in law….

In Hotel Transylvania 2, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn’t showing signs of being a vampire. So while his mother Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny – and in for a major cultural shock of her own – “Vampa” Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a “monster-in-training” boot camp. Mumsnetters everywhere will be familiar with differences in opinion with their in-laws although perhaps not quite on this scale…!

You can watch a clip from the film below

So, what’s the most bizarre piece of parenting advice you have ever received from your in laws? Maybe they they’ve got some peculiar natural remedies they suggested you use? Have they told you that they’ve found a fool proof way of getting your DC to sleep by just singing them a particular lullaby? Perhaps they think they’ve somehow come up with a way to make your DC do everything you tell them? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher! Runners up can also win 1 of 3 exclusive Hotel Transylvania 2 goody bags!

#HotelT2 is At Cinemas October 16 in 3D.

Thanks

My mil, when I was struggling to breastfed my 1st, told me it would be better for me to give up as other people could feed my baby and I could have a brake.

Like most times don't think she really thought about the implications of what her words would have, but I remember thinking "Are you crazy, I don't want anyone else feeding my newborn?!"

Funnily enough either through the implication that she would like to be involved/control more and also through sheer determination of not wanting to stop feeding my baby, it gave me the kick up the bum to go and join a breast feeding group and so and see my MW and we never looked back and fed way over the year marker!

Much to my mil's disdain (I like to think! ??)

Put brandy in their bottle if they've got a cold to help them sleep!!

janeyf1 · 20/10/2015 09:28

Don't have more than one!

cazzzie987 · 20/10/2015 09:46

Give her what she wants for a peaceful life.

createbeauty · 20/10/2015 09:47

I think it was my mother-in-law who said she had to bite one of her kids and draw blood to get him to stop biting her on the belly. :O

sjl19 · 20/10/2015 09:50

I was told if DS was crying wrap them up and put them outside in their pram!! Apparently this was the advise my MIL was given!!

phillie1 · 20/10/2015 09:54

add brandy to last bottle each night - will help with sleeping

moonray · 20/10/2015 10:09

They told me to clean my baby daughter's mouth with honey, claiming that it would make her eloquent in her speech later on in life...

voyager50 · 20/10/2015 10:25

That it's ok for the children to keep refusing to eat their healthy main courses and to let them have chocolate muffins and cake all the time as long as they eat something!

southernsun · 20/10/2015 10:25

Don't tickle their feet as they will develop a stutter later in life.

kel1981 · 20/10/2015 10:27

Don't stand a 3 month old up on your knee as they'll go bow legged!

madge47 · 20/10/2015 10:29

I was told by my MIL dont give the children sugar it will give them worms

clockbuscanada · 20/10/2015 10:33

Put a bucket in the cupboard under the stairs as you won't have time to go to the toilet now.

johnchapman1986 · 20/10/2015 10:40

My mother in law once told me to bathe my son's feet in honey as it would prevent mumps! I told her that he'd had the MMR but apparently Honey was the better option haha!

CrumpetHead · 20/10/2015 10:42

MIL told me when DS was constipated at a month or two of age to take off his nappy and put his bottom in the sunlight in the window Confused

tubbyj · 20/10/2015 10:47

Dipping the dummy in honey to help to put him down, how things change

nolene15 · 20/10/2015 10:47

My MIL told me to dip our babygirl right after birth in olive oil to prevent hair growth anywhere they'd have to shave

hiddenmichelle · 20/10/2015 10:48

To "show them who's boss" and not to keep going up the stairs if they cried out more than once. He was 12 months old!

Lweji · 20/10/2015 10:49

Don't stand up your baby (who wants to and wants to exercise his legs up and down) as he'll get wonky legs.

julieef · 20/10/2015 11:08

you DO NOT smack my grandchildren, if you do then I will smack you

Laineyflo · 20/10/2015 11:15

I was told to rub lard into my DD's scalp when she had cradle cap..

imustbemadme · 20/10/2015 11:25

My mother in law suggested I rub neat whisky into my daughter's gums when she was teething to soothe the pain !!

shroney · 20/10/2015 11:36

not to put DS's cot facing the door as apparently dead people sleep with their feet facing the door!

Saturnsid01 · 20/10/2015 11:51

You should never marry a Catholic ........... but I did anyway and they were none too pleased, but I was (and still am) happy.

chrrobbo · 20/10/2015 12:31

put sugar on weetabix...eerr at 1 year old?!
me: "but he eats it fine without and it's not that healthy to have too much sugar"...
MIL: "he likes it with, look!"....
me: bangs head on wall

That and saying "trouble is, he'll get used to it!" as I wrapped my 4 day old in a sling on me to let him sleep....I don't care if he does quite frankly!
