Hotel Transylvania 2 have asked us to find out what the most bizarre advice is Mumsnetters have ever received from their parents in law….

In Hotel Transylvania 2, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn’t showing signs of being a vampire. So while his mother Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny – and in for a major cultural shock of her own – “Vampa” Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a “monster-in-training” boot camp. Mumsnetters everywhere will be familiar with differences in opinion with their in-laws although perhaps not quite on this scale…!

You can watch a clip from the film below

So, what’s the most bizarre piece of parenting advice you have ever received from your in laws? Maybe they they’ve got some peculiar natural remedies they suggested you use? Have they told you that they’ve found a fool proof way of getting your DC to sleep by just singing them a particular lullaby? Perhaps they think they’ve somehow come up with a way to make your DC do everything you tell them? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher! Runners up can also win 1 of 3 exclusive Hotel Transylvania 2 goody bags!

#HotelT2 is At Cinemas October 16 in 3D.

Thanks

That i should drink as much cows milk as i was feeding dc1 to make sure i didn't "dry up". She would not accept that you didn't need cows milk to produce breastmilk...

aBrightNewDay · 16/10/2015 06:35

A lot of these actually make sense to me!

Hmm
InMySpareTime · 16/10/2015 07:10

bright even the lucky straw?

GardeningWithDynamite · 16/10/2015 07:38

My PILs are very sensible. My mum is the one coming out with all the gems. Apparently her mum was even worse. Did you know that if you tickle babies' feet it will give them fits? No? Trufact. That and stretching up above your head in pregnancy will wrap the baby's cord around its neck by some miracle of anatomy.

My mum was a bit useless but well meaning with the breastfeeding advice (having never done it herself). When I was really struggling in the early days of feeding my first baby - needed pillows, infacol, struggled with latching and hours and hours of time she started suggesting I play music (because I needed yet one more thing to sort out) and perhaps the "quality" of my breastmilk wasn't good enough. With the second it was just asking whether I was giving him water to drink (no) or fruit juice (also no).

imwithspud · 16/10/2015 09:04

Pestering me to wean from about 8 weeks because that's what they did with their dc.

And when dc2 was a few weeks old she woke an hour after being put to bed, mil told me "I could leave her if I wanted"Hmm (if I wanted indeed, I didn't think I needed permission to see to my own child) good job I didn't leave her as she woke up because she was far to hot in their extremely warm house and needed to lose a layer.

aBrightNewDay · 16/10/2015 09:27

Especially the lucky straw!

:o

SuzCG · 16/10/2015 10:15

'Don't ever put the baby in bed with you - your husband is far more important than the baby!' That quite clearly is rubbish!!

Etak15 · 16/10/2015 10:16

If you have any kind of injury - burn, bang on the head, mouth ulcer, sore bottom, leg fallen off etc - put butter on it! - yes that's my mil' top tip! Also another one obsessed with bottles every time I've breastfed any of mine in her presence - have you tried a bottle? You should get them used to a bottle? Bottle will fill them up, etc etc.....

GloGirl · 16/10/2015 10:32

Don't stand being your baby, it's bad for their eyes to strain that way Confused

OhHolyFuck · 16/10/2015 11:54

Oh I got that tickling baby before 6 months will make them fit too - wonder where it comes from?

ButterflyOfFreedom · 16/10/2015 13:47

'Advice' on how to get baby to sleep through the night:

DF - a drop of whiskey in her milk

DM - put her to sleep on her front

Thanks darling parents!! Hmm

Angelik · 16/10/2015 13:56

that babies are sneaky and will try to catch you out according to mil! my pfb ds was 4 weeks old

Wilhamenawonka · 16/10/2015 18:08

Breastfeeding will ruin my breasts - thanks for caring fil and stop staring at my tits please.
And I don't care if Guinness has iron in it, I'm not swigging it while pregnant thanks mil

BeeMyBaby · 16/10/2015 18:41

If baby has a cold spray breast milk up its nose... Asked Dr about this and advised no...

soundsystem · 16/10/2015 18:58

BeeMyBaby my GP and 2 midwifes were obsessed with breast milk as a cure for everything! Gunky eye? Squeeze some breast milk in it! Snuffly baby? Breast milk up the nose! etc..

WowOoo · 16/10/2015 19:21

I can't think of anything awful that was said. They did say to leave the baby outside, well wrapped up for naps. Not bad advice at all, but I remember being real shocked at the time...(pfb) It was so cold!

Hopezibah · 16/10/2015 20:30

Weirdest thing grandad said was not to stand behind the baby because if they try to look upwards and backwards at you, their eyes could roll back into their heads and get stuck!!!! Bizarre!!!

Devilishpyjamas · 16/10/2015 21:02

To send my severely autistic (non-verbal) son to the local very posh private school. Er.....

TattieHowkerz · 16/10/2015 21:08

Crack a raw egg onto her bottom to treat nappy rash.

DD was allergic to egg, so particularly strange advice!

Tonicandgin · 16/10/2015 23:24

Why are you bothering with a car seat? Is it not better to strap a carrycot into the back seat? Confused

Babbafish · 17/10/2015 06:48

I breastfed mine and my mum constantly nagged me to feed with a bottle!!!! She loved it when my second couldn't feed (he was tube fed and then we taught him to bottle feed) she thinks it helps her with the bonding. I think they feel left out .

BrandNewAndImproved · 17/10/2015 09:42

Instead of harry Potter books why doesn't she read this nice Barbara Cartland book instead. It might help with her boisterousness.

SaltySeaBird · 17/10/2015 11:54

Not from my MIL who hasn't really tried to give me any odd advice, but another relative did say not to bother with breastfeeding as formula is far more balanced ...

piggyliggy2015 · 17/10/2015 12:33

To feed my baby girl mashed potato and gravy at 5 months old... she would love it apparently! Not sure i'm keen on overloading her with salt!

Catsgowoof · 17/10/2015 14:49

that the best thing to do with a baby crying at a family wedding is to keep passing it round everyone there til it stops crying
