Hobbycraft have asked us to find out what artsy school projects Mumsnetters have been helping their DCs with.

Here's what Hobbycraft say, "Kids are back at school, and that can only mean one thing #SchoolProjects.

"Every parent knows that it can be difficult to know where to start with school projects. Well, have no fear! Hobbycraft are here to help. We have created 25 step-by-step School Project guides showing you everything you need to make school curriculum based projects that are fun to make with your kids and sure to earn top marks!

"We've design the projects around the first three Key Stages, included everything you need to make them, easy to follow instructions, template downloads plus loads of helpful tips and interesting bits of information along the way. Whether it's making a Viking helmet, an Egyptian costume, a Roman Castle or Solar system model - School Projects have never been so fuss free and fun!

Visit the Kids' Craft section on the Hobbycraft blog to find the School Project guides."

So, what have your DCs been making for their school projects? Or if they're not currently working on anything at the moment, what's your favourite school project they've made? Maybe it's a science project of an epic model of the night sky with all the different constellations? Or perhaps a very technical drawing with hieroglyphics written on it for history class? Whatever it is, we'd love to hear it.

Please also feel free to add pictures of any of your DCs school projects, we'd love to see them!

Everyone who adds their comments to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where 3 Mumsnetters will win a £100 Hobbycraft voucher!

Thanks,
MNHQ

making a treasure map, I remember rubbing the paper with a tea bag to make it look old ans brown and burning the edges!

StandUnderMyUmbrella · 19/09/2015 22:41

My daughters topic was all about The Giants Necklace and we had to decide our own project based on this book.
We decided to make a cliff as it is quite prominent in the story. We made it out of paper maché and it was so much fun, it was a great end result! xx

My favourite project we've had to make so far, was the Clifton Suspension Bridge for his Brunel project. For the Project Day, we even made a Brunel hat for him to wear!

imustbemadme · 20/09/2015 18:42

Last term my daughter made a lamp, it was a piece of perspex which had a jellyfish engraved into it and then a light which changed colour and lit the jellyfish up. It was awesome.

xxgeexx · 20/09/2015 19:21

they always do the easter stuff, bonnets and chicks. my son is really creatie soo he loves any art stuff x

Kangakate · 20/09/2015 20:03

They had to make a bonnet at Easter and they made some christmas decorations, but it's mainly been pictures. I like the idea of kits as everything you need would be in the box, but I don't know if it would leave much in the way of individuality as each box would contain the same

knitnut24 · 20/09/2015 20:08

combine 2 or more animals to make a new one. We did a dog and a goldfish.

I have loved helping with the Easter egg decorating each year. I have enjoyed less helping to create costumes for dressing up days for WorldBookDay/ ChildrenInNeed/ ComicRelief.

marshgirl · 20/09/2015 20:46

One year the school year asked for the children to make a model of there house . They would add the houses together to make a little town and displayed for all to see.

Gill81uk · 20/09/2015 21:38

My son is doing about castles and knights and is very excited to have been making a sword and a shield at school. We haven't been asked to do anything at home yet but I know it's coming! He's loving drawing lots of castles and asking me to help him cut them out.

Sock teddy was made as an example of re-using rather than recycling

TiggersAngel7774 · 21/09/2015 01:23

edoody · 21/09/2015 06:34

Just this week we have had the task of creating a Viking related item for the class display. Queue a frantic dash to Hobbycraft and with paint, cardboard, fabric and needle and thread a Viking long ship was born! Complete with a red & white striped sail!

tishist · 21/09/2015 14:11

We've got a badge machine, so make lots of badges out of images cut from magazines etc.

Shiraznowplease · 22/09/2015 06:17

My favourite so far was a wood louse costume for an insect themed day. Lots of black and silver paint and loads and loads of black straw for legs .... Was mightily relieved I had talked ds out of going as a millipede

Emrob86 · 22/09/2015 10:36

My favourite school projects were working in 3D with clay.

Lulabellx1 · 22/09/2015 14:50

DS had to create an underwater scene last year. It was great! We got out the Filo :)

BrandNewAndImproved · 22/09/2015 19:52

Ds is making a dragon out of leaves on a big piece of cardboard.

Dd is making a board game for hw. She had made the game pieces out of plastercine and is using different coloured paper and pens for the board. She is also doing the life cycle of her favourite animal (a sea horse since its the males that have to give birth) and has made her own seahorse using pipecleaners and a YouTube video to help.

k8vincent · 22/09/2015 21:37

We made a Tudor house. I but out all these small pieces of cardboard for the roof tiles and got totally carried away. DS assisted in the process under strict supervision!

DS1 made a volcano which DH really enjoyed with him too.

hunhun007 · 22/09/2015 22:26

Shoe box for kids on the other side of the world, part of the box could be shop bought but there had to be at least 3 handmade object – we made a card, picture frame filled with dry flowers and a wire toy… it was a great fun!

Boobyandthebeads67 · 23/09/2015 10:12

My daughter came home this week saying she needed to make a magic box for a school project. I have no idea what she needs to do. I think she has some idea but we usually end up very stressed out by these projects and wish schools would have them making stuff during school hours rather than sending them home. We all have busy lives and so lengthy projects like these end up being rushed purely because we don't have the spare time to do them properly.
