Hobbycraft have asked us to find out what artsy school projects Mumsnetters have been helping their DCs with.

Here's what Hobbycraft say, "Kids are back at school, and that can only mean one thing #SchoolProjects.

"Every parent knows that it can be difficult to know where to start with school projects. Well, have no fear! Hobbycraft are here to help. We have created 25 step-by-step School Project guides showing you everything you need to make school curriculum based projects that are fun to make with your kids and sure to earn top marks!

"We've design the projects around the first three Key Stages, included everything you need to make them, easy to follow instructions, template downloads plus loads of helpful tips and interesting bits of information along the way. Whether it's making a Viking helmet, an Egyptian costume, a Roman Castle or Solar system model - School Projects have never been so fuss free and fun!

Visit the Kids' Craft section on the Hobbycraft blog to find the School Project guides."

So, what have your DCs been making for their school projects? Or if they're not currently working on anything at the moment, what's your favourite school project they've made? Maybe it's a science project of an epic model of the night sky with all the different constellations? Or perhaps a very technical drawing with hieroglyphics written on it for history class? Whatever it is, we'd love to hear it.

Please also feel free to add pictures of any of your DCs school projects, we'd love to see them!

Everyone who adds their comments to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where 3 Mumsnetters will win a £100 Hobbycraft voucher!

Thanks,
MNHQ

we had to make a castle for a history project which tunred out to take about a week of my time. It was so amazing making all the turrets and dungeons.

gazzalw · 12/09/2015 10:57

They had to make a robot last year, they've just made fox masks this year and over the summer hols they had to do a 'Peace' poster.

beckyinman · 12/09/2015 10:58

This was during the school holidays but we did the old draw round each other on wallpaper activity then decorate it. It kept them occupied for about a week

sweetsomethings · 12/09/2015 11:34

We have been making the dreaded volcano. Its been so much fun

LuckyBluie · 12/09/2015 14:15

My favourite so far has definitely been the solar system diorama, super fun! Star

Summergarden · 12/09/2015 14:44

Our favourite project was making elephants from an old plastic milk bottle. Either a 4 or 2 litre one is ok, but 4 litre is better. The handle part gets used as the trunk and some is trimmed off- should be pics on Pinterest. Then you stick tissue paper layers on with pVA glue and decorate it.

fm201069 · 12/09/2015 14:45

we're making a castle and I'm loving it more than the kids!

createbeauty · 12/09/2015 15:19

My son hasn't had any school projects yet. But he has made some pretty interesting items in school including a mud monster made out of mud, sticks and little peas for eyes. They let it dry out before bringing it home and my son loves it.

savegringo · 12/09/2015 16:48

we made a boxcart

Marg2k8 · 12/09/2015 17:07

I remember my son making a castle from bits n bobs

hannonle · 12/09/2015 19:44

They especially like making stuff out of natural materials in their Woodland Learning classes. Random bits of twigs, stones, feathers, leaves and string!

Hopezibah · 12/09/2015 20:22

My son had to make a setting for a story he then had to write about. To start with he just drew a picture in his homework book but when he went into school and saw everyone else had made actual models he came home asking for a shoe box and some glue and set to work on his.

He did really well in the end with making a backdrop in the shoebox and little monsters hanging down on strings inside it.

Hopezibah · 12/09/2015 20:23

I'd totally forgotten about my other son's big art project where he made the International Space Station out of junk modelling! It was like a huge sculpture and took up most the living room! We couldn't send it into school as it was so big so had to send a picture of it in instead.

SouthWesterlyWinds · 12/09/2015 22:25

So far we've got

1: make your own desert. So we painted a shoe box red and put the Mars rover inside. The latter was v fiddly so admittedly I did help a touch with that part.
2: draw and invent your own sea creature so DC1 invented an electric sea creature with lightening coming out of its head. physics hasn't been covered yet Grin
3:design your own lighthouse. So we went to the beach and made it with various layers of sand, seaweed for the sea and shells for the rocks

bluebump · 12/09/2015 23:06

I think our favourite thing to make has been a lava lamp, that was fun and it looked good enough to keep on display for a while! (obviously it didn't light up, it consisted of oil, water and food colouring!)

triniposse · 13/09/2015 00:06

My son told me he had Book Character the next day , so he made a Mad Hatter hat from a two plastic bags and got great compliments the next day including the Head of Art who was fascinated by it..... he made it from a pink Superdrug bag with a touch of yellow Selfridges plastic bag !!!

It only took 20 minutes to make !!!!

WowOoo · 13/09/2015 09:25

Ds made paper mach faces. They had to make a lot as it was for a Roman Army. They made hats too. It's massive but it's too good to throw away.

daisymaebee · 13/09/2015 09:30

Space has been one of the best school projects which we have being following doing crafts at home. We made some awesome rockets that you pop into a straw and launch by blowing them. Even Daddy had lots of fun with these. We did go off track and created aliens we could launch too. We have made rockets out of recycled bottles that we popped glow sticks into to make them glow at night, hung from a tree in the garden. We have a huge piece of art following the solar system on our kitchen wall, even my youngest who is 3 knows what order from earth all the planets are.

Jade5093 · 13/09/2015 10:31

We are just starting this journey.

My girl has just started part time school, first homework is to decorate her books - so wrapping paper stickers and some clear sticky film to cover is what we are doing today!

cocochips · 13/09/2015 15:02

My little one has recently made a house out of cereal boxes for a school project.

chairmeoh · 13/09/2015 19:47

The best from last term was a piece of a picture that came home, the children where asked to create something inspired by it - poem, model, story, newspaper etc.
DD created a salt dough model and a scene for it to live in. It took ages, and stretched our her non-creative skills and imagination.
She also wrote a story to accompany the scene.
Sadly it was near the end of term, so teacher was busy juggling lots of priorities. It took 3 weeks for any comment to come back about it which was a little disheartening considering the effort that went into it.
It's now living in our sitting room and I don't know where it's going to end up cos I sure as heck can't bring myself to bin it.

clarem100 · 13/09/2015 20:11

family portrait!

ladygoingGaga · 13/09/2015 20:22

DS loved making an Easter themed scene earlier this year, I had to resist the temptation to 'help' to much Grin
His smile and huge satisfaction at seeing his own work made the clearing up worthwhile!

My favourite project so far has been a board game my eldest made. It's actually worked really well, and we still play it!

buckley1983 · 13/09/2015 22:01

We made an Boxtrolls outfit for World Book Day earlier this year! Essentially just a cardboard box, painted brown to cover logos, etc & painted with the Eggs logo from the book /film character. My son LOVES both the book & the film (despite the differences between them!) so it was a really fun one for us to make together! I absolutely love a craft project as long as I have enough forewarning to get us prepared with the necessary bits & pieces to get crafting with - Hobbycraft is a great one-stop shop for this.
