Audible.co.uk has produced a new full-cast dramatisation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book – The Mowgli Stories, in association with charity partner the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), and they'd love to hear Mumsnetters' thoughts on it.

Audible.co.uk say "Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book - The Mowgli Stories is available for FREE here. 25p from every download goes to help ZSL build a future for wildlife. This 3-hour audio adaptation of a children’s classic has been brought to life by many well-known voices from British film, TV, radio and comedy, including Bill Bailey as Baloo, Richard E Grant as Kaa and Martin Shaw as Shere Khan.

The partnership between Audible.co.uk and ZSL will help highlight the plight of many of the animals who featured in The Jungle Book and are under threat in the wild, such as the Bengal tiger (Shere Khan). The creation of India’s tiger reserves in the 1970s helped to stabilise numbers, but poaching to meet a growing demand from Asia in recent years has once again put the Bengal tiger at risk. The sloth bear (represented by Baloo), which could once be found throughout India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh, is now threatened by hunting and habitat loss. Sloth bear numbers continue to decline and it is now listed as vulnerable by IUCN."

My youngest, who is 6, loved this and wanted to go to bed early and to listen to it. Again and again. Getting him settled in bed early is a great thing. My eldest said he wasn't too keen. But decided to go and listen in his brothers' bedroom instead of reading his own book - truth is he liked it too. I liked the background noises. Haven't downloaded a book for a long time.
Thank you! Hope ZSL raises lots of money.

We loved listening to this on a long car journey, there was silence for ages! I don't think it would be good for bedtime as a pp mentioned, all a bit too exciting!

marshgirl · 11/09/2015 14:08

I played this to my nephew and it kept him gripped throughout , which is a miracle beacause he is normally on the go constantly.

purplepandas · 11/09/2015 17:07

My DDs loved this although the almost 6 yr old more than the 3 yr old. They do love Jungle Book so this helps massively. Audio books are fab :)

sealight123 · 11/09/2015 19:12

It was wonderful! My daughter did seem engaged at the start, however, she lost interest after a little bit. (That is more due to my daughter going a mile a minute and rarely sitting down lol) However, my daughter has liked listening to it in smaller sections. She loves the varying voices and I found that I listened to it after she had walked off to colour lol

sharond101 · 11/09/2015 19:26

this was great. My little boy loved it and his imagination is going wild having listened.

HelenSw4les · 11/09/2015 20:25

My DD loved this, in particular all the sound effects and I loved hearing the story again from my own childhood. I wish I'd found it about a month ago though when I was suffering from laryngitis.

DrSausagedog · 11/09/2015 22:04

It is a high quality product, we love the sound effects and actors voices. Nice to have in the background as down time before dinner.

Gill81uk · 12/09/2015 21:37

I was worried my son would be a bit young but we listened to it together and really enjoyed it. We haven't seen the Disney film yet but he really wants to watch it now. He wants to be Mowgli.

Hopezibah · 12/09/2015 22:50

This is such a great concept to work with a good cause and link it to something relevant that children are going to enjoy.

If I'm honest, I had my doubts about an audiobook - I love reading actual paper books with pictures with my kids so I wasn't sure I would like it, but.... I was very pleasantly surprised!!!

It is in some ways BETTER than a paper book because the sounds and voices have to be more expressive to enhance the story.

It is a good one to listen to over and over as I think the kids will enjoy it more as they become familiar with the story.

I'm definitely going to consider downloading audio books in future too!

DCs have only listened to the first 30 mins so far, but sat there gripped by it! Impressed with the quality of the narrators. Just need to work out how to play it in the car now for the long journey we have next week.

Kathderoet · 13/09/2015 12:35

The link didn't work, the only way I could get it was by taking a 30 day free trial and then paying £7.99 a month. I wasn't prepared to go that far. (Error code - promotional code needed)

cocochips · 13/09/2015 14:34

The little one loved it...great quality and a wonderful classic tale.

matphil · 13/09/2015 22:24

I played this in the car for my 2 children on a long journey in the hope of keeping them occupied. They have watched the film so knew the story.
They thoroughly enjoyed the story especially all the different tones of the voices and the sound effects.
It made for a very pleasant journey that passed quickly and without complaint from my children. We will definitely listen to this again and I am going to find them some more classic stories for our journeys as I enjoyed listening to it as well.

sarah3875 · 14/09/2015 08:29

We all really enjoyed this. Maybe me more so than the children!!

funkyfish586 · 14/09/2015 10:01

We all really enjoyed this & we are big fans of the Disney one.

hmd104 · 14/09/2015 15:18

It was really good, love the jungle book anyway.. happy days

Kangakate · 14/09/2015 19:02

My husband listened to this with our little one as he loves the Jungle Book, he really enjoyed and I could here the two of them in the other room chatting and acting out the characters

sadiewoohoo · 14/09/2015 21:18

Same here - I think I enjoyed it as much as the kids but thumbs up from us

TiggersAngel7774 · 14/09/2015 23:56

My son has aspergers and possibly Adhd he wasnt interested sorry, hes very visual so never listens to anything unless visual as well

Mandahul · 15/09/2015 07:57

We used it in the car and I must say, it's the quietest journey so far. We loved the sound affects, it felt like it pulled us right into the story :)

helcrai · 15/09/2015 10:09

My two daughters aged 7 & 9 both enjoyed listening to this in the car as we were on a long journey. They had both been read the book so it was nice to have it brought to life.

lucyrobinson · 15/09/2015 12:56

We love an audio book and this didn't disappoint. x

VickyRsuperstar · 15/09/2015 13:53

We have really enjoyed listening to this! It's a really good dramatisation, the kids loved the music, the voices and the characters. I was listening to it along with them and I enjoyed it just as much as them! My kids love to listen to story CDs so I can see them listening to this one over and over again. As well as enjoying the story, the kids asked a lot of questions about it afterwards, so it has really stretched their imagination. I have been buying hard copy CDs for the kids CD player recently, but having used Audible, I think buying and downloading digital copies of books is a much better idea as it is very quick and easy to get the download and it won't get scratched like the CDs do sometimes! This has been a very enjoyable experience for us and we will definitely use Audible again.

zakky7 · 15/09/2015 14:13

This is fantastic. We sat and devoured this in one session as it's such a classic. I have always loved the film but never really sat down and read the book, so it's been great to have it in audiobook format. Even my nephew, who never sits still, was mesmerised by the noise and sounds of the jungle. Excellent adaptation.
