Audible.co.uk has produced a new full-cast dramatisation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book – The Mowgli Stories, in association with charity partner the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), and they'd love to hear Mumsnetters' thoughts on it.

Audible.co.uk say "Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book - The Mowgli Stories is available for FREE here. 25p from every download goes to help ZSL build a future for wildlife. This 3-hour audio adaptation of a children’s classic has been brought to life by many well-known voices from British film, TV, radio and comedy, including Bill Bailey as Baloo, Richard E Grant as Kaa and Martin Shaw as Shere Khan.

The partnership between Audible.co.uk and ZSL will help highlight the plight of many of the animals who featured in The Jungle Book and are under threat in the wild, such as the Bengal tiger (Shere Khan). The creation of India’s tiger reserves in the 1970s helped to stabilise numbers, but poaching to meet a growing demand from Asia in recent years has once again put the Bengal tiger at risk. The sloth bear (represented by Baloo), which could once be found throughout India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh, is now threatened by hunting and habitat loss. Sloth bear numbers continue to decline and it is now listed as vulnerable by IUCN."

Great way to keep them engaged with the odd animal impression for good measure

glennamy · 06/09/2015 11:03

DD loves it, she has already seen JB many times, we have it on DVD, VHS & we even have the whole thing on (rare) vinyl LP, which I cherish...

finleypop · 06/09/2015 11:05

Fantastic!! My son loves reading & being read to. He sat with a pair of headphones on & was absorbed & silent & thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks so much!

baby890 · 06/09/2015 11:47

Jungle Book was one of my faves when I was little, so was great for my child (and me) to listen to this. We both loved it! :)

hannonle · 06/09/2015 11:57

It didn't really hold his attention. Maybe I should have picked a calmer time of day to put it on.

Buxtonstill · 06/09/2015 14:00

Brilliant to download to iPhone/iPad. Then play at bedtime, and join in with the animal effects from time to time. Not being a book, you don't have to have a light on to read it, and little ones fall asleep quicker!

sweir1 · 06/09/2015 16:29

He enjoyed it almost as much as the dvd

Sallyannlloydjones · 06/09/2015 20:35

One of our favourite stories...really enjoyed it!

ephillips340 · 06/09/2015 21:00

My Lil boy esp enjoys this

seeingdouble2 · 06/09/2015 21:19

my children have never expressed a need for this kind of thing, I think they prefer to see and listen together. Had a listen to the jungle book and thought it was average sadly.

Theimpossiblegirl · 06/09/2015 23:13

We have started it in the car. I must admit, I found it hard to read this particular book to my children so this is a good way to experience the book without me doing any work.
:)
So far so good, part 2 on the school run tomorrow. I often get there before breakfast club opens so it's a good way to kill time.

I like audiobooks, it's good for children to not have everything done for them. This way they can visualise the characters themselves rather than rely on Disney.

OanaChi · 07/09/2015 17:42

We only started listening to audio books a few weeks ago. We truly love doing it in the car, great way to absorb new vocab and learn new things while on the go. Emma and I both love the opportunity, thank you Audible books and Mumsnet for this opportunity!xx

The boys loved listening to The Jungle Book and even though it is a long time since we watched the film, they remembered some of the characters.

AGnu · 07/09/2015 20:42

I listened to it by myself before letting my nearly 4yo listen. I really enjoyed it - the jungle sound effects were really good. DS1 also seemed to enjoy it but missed most of it by constantly asking why the characters were doing things! I'd love to put it on in the car for him because he does tend to listen better when he's restrained in the car but we've only got a CD player & I can't figure out if it's possible to write it to a CD.

Jocelynne123 · 07/09/2015 21:36

My little one loved the voice effects and it wasn't to scary even though she's under 8. However it didn't help at bed time. I think the voice effects made the story too exciting. It wasn't soothing for them to fall asleep to. But it would be perfect for car journeys. Xx

minsmum · 07/09/2015 21:47

I have downloaded it and my ds who is a lot older but has Asbergers and processing difficulties really loved it. He doesn't read much as it's too much of a struggle for him. I am thinking of getting him an audible subscription after this so thanks very much. Why didn't I think of it before.

phillie1 · 07/09/2015 22:52

loved it

CopperPan · 08/09/2015 10:50

Had a listen to this with the dc and it was a great way for them to wind down before bed. Very expressive and interesting, and far less work for me than having to read to them myself!

barricade · 08/09/2015 12:56

Just downloaded 'The Jungle Book' - fab audio book of a classic story. Shouldn't say this, but it made us want to go straight to our DVD of the Disney adaptation, but only to add visuals to the words. Will do so only after completing the entire audio narration. Some top names attached to this - Richard E Grant is just brill, looking forward to hearing his voice performance.

My son (5 years old) and I are listening to it at breakfast before going to school. He is so transfixed by it that you have to keep reminding him to keep eating. We both really like the background noises - the sounds of the jungle and characters - it makes it all the more real.

angiehoggett · 09/09/2015 16:23

brilliant we really enjoyed it!

NettleTea · 09/09/2015 18:10

wonderful. Thats all I can say. Had kids of 9 and 14 entranced

asuwere · 09/09/2015 20:07

I had a quick listen and it sounds great, really sounds like you're in the jungle.
Ds has been listening to it in bed and he is really enjoying it. He's not a great reader but this is a great way to get him interested in the story.
Love it!

andywedge · 09/09/2015 21:57

He just didn't take to it. He much prefers reading himself, which is a good thing. Audiobooks have a place yes, but not at all for young children who are learning to read.

chezvic · 09/09/2015 22:41

My daughter loved this, the content is superb and it really captivated her. We read lots of books and she's watched Disney films but we've never enjoyed an audio book together. She normally loses interest in things pretty quickly but the voices, story and excitement all helped to really entertain her
