Below are a few points to get you started, but feel free to add any other comments you have:

  1. Have you been thinking about giving up or eating less sugar?
  2. If yes, why? Do you have any tips/tricks you have for helping to beat sugar cravings?

Q1- Yes, I try regularly but as I work shifts and do a lot of sport I always cave in by 2pm or 2am (depending on the shift) and grab a bag of malteasers

2- Just to fill me up less and make me more hungry so I will eat 'proper' meals- nothing works!

tabbaz123 · 12/02/2015 15:38

Yes I am certainly using a lot less sugar than ever before but this is due to a friend and my father both developing diabetes I have really enjoyed finding new recipes and now have a whole range of cakes and muffins that I bake with zero sugar that are sweet enough even for the little ones sweet tooth

jabrady91 · 12/02/2015 15:39

I have cut down by switching all white grain products to brown such as pasta, bread etc.

Instead of something sweet at night, I now have a mug of peanut butter hottie before bed and stick mainly to water.

Gedge · 12/02/2015 15:43

I've always preferred savoury snacks, don't have sugar in coffee or on cereal, so I don't really think I need to cut down.

CMOTDibbler · 12/02/2015 15:49

yes,, I've tried to cut down.

I've stopped buying things with hidden sugar, esp things like cereals. Other things, I've slowly reduced the amount of sugar that is added to them.

But I'm a great believer in moderation, so if we have cake (vv rarely at home, normally half way through a long bike ride) its going to be full on.

BellaWella86 · 12/02/2015 15:56

I've tried giving up sugar after realising how much tea I drink in one day. I've cut back on spoonfuls of sugar but really struggled as I have a sweet tooth! I've tried sweeteners too which have helped. After a few days, I can't taste the difference.

maisiesnan · 12/02/2015 15:59

We are in the process of cutting down on sugar, we try and buy sugar free options where available. When cooking/ baking at home we reduce the sugar content in our recipes where we can and use the granular canderel for baking buns and biscuits no one has noticed the difference so far

aimingforthesky · 12/02/2015 16:14

I have followed a low carb way of eating since October 14. Average 40-70gm per day. I have completely lost the 2pm chocolate cravings and highs and lows apart from premenstrual few days. I have found using sugar free cola and homemade muffins made with artificial sweetners allows me to continue with low carb and weightloss. I have not found it to raise my sugar craving and can continue with my way of eating. The rest of the family have no interest in reducing sugar intake so the home is still chocolate heaven !

DJASKEW · 12/02/2015 16:32

I replace sugary drinks with herbal or green tea and also got rid of sugary snacks by having fruit and veg instead or savouries such as nuts

RACHELSMITH45 · 12/02/2015 16:44

I try not to buy too many sugary foods so if I feel hungry I'll snack on what we have in. If there was tons of chocolate then I would choose that! As we have mostly fruit, I tend to snack on fruits. I make it interesting by buying different fruit varieties though!

Caly2014 · 12/02/2015 16:50

I've tried to, but haven't been able to give up sugar completely. I found cutting down ok (swapping from juice/ pop to water when I am thirsty), but I have such a sweet tooth that eliminating sugar completely isn't feasible.

Lovewhereilive · 12/02/2015 16:55

I eat low carb so that reduces the sugar. Still can't resist chocolate though and can't quite cut it out.

UpOnDown · 12/02/2015 16:57

Yes, I need to cut down sugar. I do this by cutting out sugary foods, like cakes and biscuits.

zakaya · 12/02/2015 17:06

Although it hasn't been easy it has got easy as I take it a day at a time. Cutting back on sugar without the need to use sugar replacements.

mlom · 12/02/2015 17:07
  1. I've gradually reduced my sugar intake, I do noy have sugar in my tea anymore or with my cereal. I am struggling on products tha do contain sugar but try to select the lowest level of sugar. Or try to eat more natural sugars. By doing this I lost 4 stone in less than 12 months
  1. If I get a sweet tooth I add ait of honey to my tea
amandaleeds · 12/02/2015 17:11

I eat far too much sugar in the form of energy gels and jelly sweets when I run long distances. I'm trying to replace some of these snacks with nairn cheese oatcakes although they don't provide energy as quickly. I check cereals carefully to make sure I only eat very low sugar options such as shredded wheat.

baby890 · 12/02/2015 17:36

Like most people, I agree, I do need to cut down my sugar intake!

Find it really difficult though as it is in so much stuff. Even things that you would not think it was in...it's hidden away in there!

hannonle · 12/02/2015 17:38

I can't say I've really tried to cut it down but I do think that I would rather just eat less of it rather than replace it with sweetener. Having said that, I almost always chose 'diet' when having fizzy drinks. There's way too much sugar in the regular ones and they take away my hunger so I don't then eat nutritious meals.

tubbss · 12/02/2015 17:43

I dont think I need to cut down on my sugar. I dont take it in drinks, I dont drink fizzy drinks or eat processed food. I get the occasional "craving" for sweets though, normally when the kids are in bed so I will indulge in jelly babies!

becks213 · 12/02/2015 17:59

Have tried many times to give up sugar and have always found it hard as I have a very sweet tooth, I have managed to stop the sugar in my tea/coffee and switched to sweeteners instead but still find it impossible to give up milk chocolate, I tried switching to dark chocolate but I just don't like the taste so am trying to cut down as much as I can but don't think I will ever be able to cut it out completely. I will however, keep trying!

maureen3733 · 12/02/2015 18:01

i restrict any sweet food to after dinner in the evening. it seems to stop the craving thru the day.

babyboo1and2 · 12/02/2015 18:04

I have a very sweet tooth and would like to reduce the amount of sugar I consume due to recent TV programmes etc detailing the addictive nature of sugar.

I cannot resist sweet things so in order to eat less sugar I have to make a conscious effort not to buy it. I am a chocolate addict and have found I eat less dark chocolate.

ijustdonotknow · 12/02/2015 18:35

I'm trying to cut down on sugar for myself and my family. I've never eaten much fat but I know I eat too much suger and have a very sweet tooth.

I think the "fat-free" slogans mean we've had our eye off the ball around sugar intake. So often "low fat" is balanced out with high sugar levels.

I don't like the idea of artificial sweeteners and would rather have sugar but less of it. We have tried Stevia based sweeteners. The family say they don't like it but I still use it in cooking. I'm not sure if I'll buy it again.

carolacr · 12/02/2015 18:52

Chocolate and lemonade are my downfall, can switch to diet lemonade but where do i find diet chocolate.

freefan · 12/02/2015 18:59

I think it's really hard to eat reduced sugar items as I feel they have hidden words for it and lots of natural sugars within them, so I am really just trying to reduce our families intake of cakes, biscuits and all typically sugary foods, was so shocked to see how much sugar was 'hidden' in everyday foods like the brand of beans we were buying so being extra vigilante when shopping now too
