We've been asked by Canderel to find out about Mumsnetters' experiences and opinions on reducing sugar intake.

Canderel say "At Canderel, We’re all about sugar alternatives that still let you indulge yourself. With the average UK person consuming more than their recommended sugar allowance (10% of their daily calorie intake per day)*, we’d like to know how we can help your family manage your sugar intake. Be SweetSmart, swap to Canderel"

Below are a few points to get you started, but feel free to add any other comments you have:

  1. Have you been thinking about giving up or eating less sugar?
  2. If yes, why? Do you have any tips/tricks you have for helping to beat sugar cravings?

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Please note, Canderel may use your anonymous comments on social media, so please only comment if you're happy with this.

Thanks & good luck,

I am lucky that I have never had a really sweet tooth and I've worked really hard to reduce my sugar intake. I still love chocolate but high cocoa solids and I find most sweets, desserts, yoghurts too sweet for my taste. My advice, reduce a little at a time and your taste buds become used to it and you then find tat lots of foods are way too sweet.

puffinsaregood · 12/02/2015 19:03

I try to remember to only eat fruit with meals, and use xylitol when I do need to sweeten my cooking.

Cailin7 · 12/02/2015 19:07

I need to eat less treats in general! I have never added sugar to drinks, cereal etc so that is not an issue. My plan is to cut out sugary snacks completely rather than use substitutes. This has worked for me in the past.

dragon60 · 12/02/2015 19:21

not considered reducing my sugar, but then again I think I am pretty good anyway, don't have sugarry cereals for instance and biscuits are a very rare treat in the house. No sugar in my hot drinks. So as long as I don't mention the cakes or chocolalte all is well!

HelenSw4les · 12/02/2015 19:22

I now use artificial sweetener in my tea and coffee instead of sugar and am buying less sugary items and have recently made some sugar free ice pops for the children, they loved them.

beckyinman · 12/02/2015 19:36

I did the caveman diet last year and gave up sugar for 2 weeks. Once I ate it again I had one Jaffa Cake and before I knew it I had demolished the whole packet - it was instant addiction! It really scared me and made me more aware of what I eat

mrscumberbatch · 12/02/2015 19:46

I gave up sugary drinks and found myself addicted to aspartame!

The cravings are terrible. I am not sure what was worse.

I need to improve our overall sugar consumption though, although its hard in winter. It can be my spring self improvement project!

  1. Yes, I am always thinking I should cut out sugar
  1. Because it is bad for your teeth and liver, makes you fat, the more you eat the more you crave. I find that when I have been avoiding it I want less and then too much sugar makes me feel jittery.
Lolaura · 12/02/2015 19:58

I have thought about cutting back on my sugar intake, but only since becoming a mum. I'm now very conscious about my health, and setting a good example to my son.

I eat fruit to satisfy my sugar craving. I still allow myself the odd treat though, by not denying myself a treat, I find it is not so much of a chore to be healthier

Marg2k8 · 12/02/2015 20:04

I joined Weightwatchers when I wanted to lose weight and although they don't make you give up sugar, counting the points does make you think about what you want to eat and whether you really do want that spoon of sugar in your coffee.

hbakfam · 12/02/2015 20:04

I haven't been trying to eat less sugar, but I did find Canderel makes very nice iced coffee!

Liquorice13 · 12/02/2015 20:11

I need my daily sugar fix. I decided to give up sugar in December to lose weight and it made me feel so poorly, I won't do it again

bluebubblerose · 12/02/2015 20:17

replacing sugary snacks with fruit x

faybelle · 12/02/2015 20:44

don't buy any chocolates

paulaburnside114 · 12/02/2015 20:49

I do try and eat less sugar but I love sweet foods so I always use sweetener rather than sugar and always go for diet drinks.

littleme96 · 12/02/2015 20:50

We are trying to, but it's quite difficult!

We've been swapping cakes for rice cakes and biscuits for oatcakes and are trying to eat a lot more fruit.

We have cut down on ready made sauces and now make our own, so we know exactly what's in our food too.

arat · 12/02/2015 20:57

I switched from sugar to sweeteners in drinks years ago and like to think I have a fairly balanced diet anyway, so it's not top of my priorities, but I do try and watch teh sugar content of whatever I'm buying for the kids.

shawbarbara · 12/02/2015 21:00

I have stopped putting sugar in my tea and I have cut out Fizzy drinks - in my world that is difficult and a big achievement!!!!

Themilseys · 12/02/2015 21:01

I gave up adding sugar to hot drinks gradually - from 2 teaspoons to 1 and half, to 1 to half to none and soon could only drink it without. I have a sweet tooth and have tried to eat less and less sugery foods over the years but am still shocked by how much hidden sugar there is in food. I have tried to make some deserts with a sugar replacement but mostly try to avoid eating too many sweet foods.

sealight123 · 12/02/2015 21:01

Me and my family have had a big overhaul of our sugar intake and are trying to get a healthier lifestyle. We don't really have sugar in much (we don't have it in hot drinks, cereal etc) However, our downfall is we love chocolate and we love to bake (and eat) cakes. We've generally gone for the out of sight out of mind approach, if we don't buy it we can't eat it. However we do really miss baking so If anyone comes across some sugar-free (much less sugar) recipes for cakes send 'em my way before I bake one of my own accord and inhale a Victoria Sponge!!! :)

Butteredparsnips · 12/02/2015 21:27

I love canderel and berries with natural yoghurt or cream cheese. With lemon juice mixed in, it is like cheesecake and is a real treat. I also like the sweetened berries with toasted brioche.
I have been trying to reduce my sugar intake to 50 g a day. I would like to lose some weight, and have been trying to eat low GI foods to stop being constantly hungry. This isn't easy as although I don't add a lot of sugar to my food or drinks, I am a real chocoholic. Anyway I have been looking for alternative sweet treats and this thread has prompted me to look at the website for recipes. And I have found the chocolate roulade. Low sugar, low fat, and lowish calories. Woo hoo.

star1000 · 12/02/2015 21:28

Yes I have been trying to cut down on sugar as I'm trying to lose some weight.

I don't have sugar in hot drinks but do enjoy hot chocolate so have a 40 calorie option and I'm trying to stop sugary snacks during the day and just having fruit or yoghurt instead.

mave · 12/02/2015 21:29

I have such a sweet tooth. I have cut down but allow myself a treat after tea every night, have also stopped drinking juice and sugar in tea and coffee. Its been difficult but worth it, I feel loads better.

cheekychicken24 · 12/02/2015 21:29

It's tough because it's in so many foods you wouldn't expect. I've started to make bread using just a teaspoon of sugar for 12 rolls of 1 roll - far less than in bought loaves.

daisyduck123 · 12/02/2015 21:31

There is so much sugar in most processed food, and some that you wouldn't expect too.. even bread ! I'm cooking a lot more from scratch.
