We've been asked by Canderel to find out about Mumsnetters' experiences and opinions on reducing sugar intake.

Canderel say "At Canderel, We’re all about sugar alternatives that still let you indulge yourself. With the average UK person consuming more than their recommended sugar allowance (10% of their daily calorie intake per day)*, we’d like to know how we can help your family manage your sugar intake. Be SweetSmart, swap to Canderel"

Below are a few points to get you started, but feel free to add any other comments you have:

  1. Have you been thinking about giving up or eating less sugar?
  2. If yes, why? Do you have any tips/tricks you have for helping to beat sugar cravings?

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Please note, Canderel may use your anonymous comments on social media, so please only comment if you're happy with this.

I have been cutting down on sugar since the start of the New Year. I sopped having sugar in drinks, I check food labels to see how much sugar is in it and I make all my meals from scratch so |I can try and control the amount of sugar my family consumes. It is hard to change but your body adapts quickly and you soon feel the difference especially on your waistline x

When I got gestational diabetes I eliminated all sugars from my diet and replaced sugar with honey in tea etc. Now two months post partum I have become used to it and no longer like sugar in my drinks.

VickyRsuperstar · 24/02/2015 12:15

I've cut out all sugary drinks and make sure the kids have sugar free ones instead, but I'm struggling to get them to cut down on sugar on cereal - all the kids cereal have a lot of sugar and if I give them plain cereal, then they add far too much themselves! I am trying a few sneaky ones though like reduced salt and sugar baked beans and ketchup as the kids don't notice those ones!
I hadn't thought of using a sugar substitute so I might give it a go!

lorrainej162 · 24/02/2015 13:10

I'm lucky as I don't eat lot of added sugar. I find, like others have said that the difficulty is with hidden sugar in packaged food.

Sugar affects my mood so I try to reduce it as much as I can. My top tip is - if you have a craving for something sweet try a milky hot chocolate. It satisfies hunger as well as hitting the sweet spot :)

my problem is that I need to watch my calories and because I'm short on time I do eat processed food. And of course low calorie foods often substitute sugar for fat. Frustrating. But when I have time to home cook candarel is a useful substitute.

yevmo31 · 24/02/2015 14:18

I really needed to cut down on sugar due to middle age spread, i have always found it very difficult to cut down, as i have never liked sugar substitutes as they usually have a bitter after taste, however i find Canderel does not have this bitter after taste. I no longer buy sugar and use Canderel in my drinks and baking :)

only eating sweets at weekend

aussiegeckogirl · 24/02/2015 16:10

yes I have thought about it and decided to try as even though I am not overweight I have a sweet tooth, which is my reason for giving up as I know its not good for you, I have swapped anything sugary snacks for natural sugar products like honey, I have bought Davina's 5 weeks to sugar free for some great recipes as well.

We are on a healthy eating plan this year as our Daughter is getting Married and we all need to lose some weight and get fit. Low fat works for us but we also use sugar free products as well, my main gripe is how much hidden sugar is in everyday products, it is sometimes difficult to check how much you are consuming

xlovekillsx · 24/02/2015 22:45

I always think about eating less sugar but it's so hard to do! Even fruit is sugary! I'm trying to cook more food from scratch which is helping, but snacking on foods that are slightly more fatty such as nuts as these are less sugary

ktandspen · 24/02/2015 23:17

We have introduced Maple syrup as a sugar alternative, its fab!

hannahlw85 · 24/02/2015 23:21

I want to get healthier in general which includes cutting down on sugar. I'm looking into the best ways to cut down and beat the cravings.

yoeydavis · 26/02/2015 13:05

I stopped having sugar in tea and coffee, and I don't buy cereals that need sweetening anymore.
