MolluDab have asked us to find out which children’s health niggles Mumsnetters wish they’d know about before they became a parent.

Here’s what MolluDab say, “Becoming a parent throws up many challenges none more so than the countless, often highly contagious, health niggles your children can pick up. One of which is Molluscum contagiosum. Molluscum contagiosum or ‘water warts’ is a common and relatively harmless (but highly contagious) viral infection of the skin. The spots are easily recognised, and are small dome-like shiny pimples often grouped together. Molluscum contagiosum occurs most frequently in children and young adults, most frequently pre-schoolers aged 1-4 years. The condition usually clears within 12-18 months without treatment but can last longer and causes those affected much embarrassment and self-consciousness. MolluDab is a new and proven treatment for Molluscum Contagiosum, available on prescription or from the pharmacist.”

So, which children’s health niggles had you not heard of before becoming a parent that you wish you had? What advice or information would you pass on about children’s health niggles to other Mumsnetters? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £150 voucher for Jojo Maman Bebe.

The comments on this thread may be used (anonymously) by MolluDab in future marketing material, so please only post if you’re happy with this.

Thanks and good luck,

Toddler diarrhoea! DD had this from the age of about 16 months and it was a nightmare having to deal with the nappies and the leaks on top of worrying about viruses and keeping food diaries that gave us absolutely no clues and taking days off work to look after an otherwise perfectly healthy child until we eventually got a doctor to give her the all clear for anything contagious and convinced the childminder to make an exception to the normal 'stay away for 48hrs after any bout of diarrhoea' rule. And after 6 months it just stopped.

MadMonkeys · 05/01/2015 16:10

Constipation...

FlappertyFlippers · 05/01/2015 16:33

Post viral rash. Every time my dd got a little bit ill she'd come out in a rash, about 2 days after the initial temperature and runny nose. Every single time id panic and rush her to the doctor to get checked for meningitis, measles, etc. Luckily it was a harmless post viral rash each time

pertempsnooo · 05/01/2015 16:35

Croup?
Horrible coughing sound more like a sea lion barking. Terrifying if you don't know what it is.

26Point2Miles · 05/01/2015 16:39

Worms...
Nits...

I'm a mum of 5..... It's been a long slog, but yes, only one of my children had contagiom molluscum. Expected them all to

ouryve · 05/01/2015 16:43

I'd have loved to have been prompted to consider just how far puke flies off a top bunk.

CMOTDibbler · 05/01/2015 16:55

Molloscum was something I was blissfully unaware of tbh.

Lurleene · 05/01/2015 16:59

Mesenteric adenitis - whenever DD was under the weather she would get a very painful tummy. The Doctor diagnosed Mesenteric Adentitis - essentially swollen lymph nodes in the stomach area that are fighting off infection. This affects children but not adults and I had never heard of it before.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 05/01/2015 17:03

Hand, foot and mouth. DD had an awful case of it, knocked her out for weeks. I didn't know it existed!

Reekypear · 05/01/2015 17:04

Stool withholding. And you can still get childhood diseases with vaccines.

Nerf · 05/01/2015 17:07

Oh I am always telling my pharmacist this! Every time I go in to buy:

Worm medicine
Nit lotion
Cream for licking chins and making them raw
Impetigo prescription
Conjunctivitis prescription
Ringworm prescription
Molluscum - I live in fear!

In fact, any low level faintly disgusting time consuming icky thing that involves being perfectly healthy but in need of maintenance!

icklekid · 05/01/2015 17:19

Yes to croup- ds had a cough which got worse and worse over the weekend. It was obviously causing him a lot of pain and distress. I took him to the dr and was told it was croup- had never even heard of it before!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 05/01/2015 17:21

'Sticky Eye' - common in newborns (apparently).
I scared myself silly when DD got it, thinking it was conjunctivitus then googling conjunctivitus and reading how bad it can be in babies...!!

Am glad constipation has been mentioned - DS suffers from this bless him, but I realise it is quite common in toddlers.

WowOoo · 05/01/2015 17:36

There are so many illnesses that I hadn't really thought about for years -worms, nits, all sorts of rashes and viruses.

I'd never heard of molluscum or hand, foot and mouth before having children.
Mumsnet and Dr. Google really was a godsend for me in the early years.

Ineedacleaningfairy · 05/01/2015 18:07

3 day fever, (I think it's called that) where your dc gets a really high temperature but with no other symptoms and then a rash, I was terrified about the high temperature and ds was still running around playing and causing havoc!

A more serious thing I think new parents should be warned about is bronchiolitus in babies, I had no idea a cold could be so dangerous for a tiny baby :(

CheeseEMouse · 05/01/2015 18:08

Hand foot and mouth. I had no idea it existed and it was upsetting to see my daughter so uncomfortable. And I am utterly fed up of my daughter's constant ear infections, she must be too poor thing.

Baddz · 05/01/2015 18:14

Bronchiolitis - never heard of it.
Hand, foot and mouth - never heard of it.
Never knew about viral rash either...both my dc have had this.

ReallyTired · 05/01/2015 18:18

I think its a bit silly to be scared of molluscum as in 90% of cases its just unsightly and eventually goes away on its own. Dd is in a very bad way with molluscum because of the ezcema alongside the bumps. I would like more information on whether Molludab is suitable for a child with really bad ezcema.

Treating bad ezcema in children that I knew nothing about before having babies. Every person in the street seems to want to give their advice and most of it is bull.

HidingBehindANewNickname · 05/01/2015 18:24

The amount of snot that can come, continuously over a period of about 2 years from a small boy.

fish88 · 05/01/2015 18:29

I never realised how difficult a cold can be in a newborn when they are too snotty to feed properly, wake themselves up coughing and you can't give them anything to treat the symptoms.

diamondsrock · 05/01/2015 18:43

Slapped cheek disease/fifth disease. Looks awful and made me worry a lot before I found out what it was.

Theimpossiblegirl · 05/01/2015 18:52

I would have found it really useful to have a matter of fact guide to common illnesses/infections that children get, worms, nits, slap cheek, chicken pox, Molluscum Contasiosm etc.

Both my 2 had Molluscum but Molludab wasn't available (or I hadn't heard of it). I recommended it to a friend after seeing it advertised and it worked on her son.

306235388 · 05/01/2015 19:03

Tongue ties - the midwives weren't very well educated either and it made my first 2 weeks with a severely tongue tied dd absolute hell. I ended up giving up breast feeding which broke my heart and I firmly believe the experience directly contributed to my PND.

Also worms, reflux, temperatures for no reason, croup, so much snot it seems physically impossible and hand foot and mouth!

Scatlett4456 · 05/01/2015 19:11

Scarlet fever, it spreads scary fst and sounds so medieval. ( and life threatening)

InAndOfMyself · 05/01/2015 19:31

I wish I had known about bronchiolitis, I probably would have recognised the signs earlier and sought treatment/monitoring.
