MolluDab have asked us to find out which children’s health niggles Mumsnetters wish they’d know about before they became a parent.

Here’s what MolluDab say, “Becoming a parent throws up many challenges none more so than the countless, often highly contagious, health niggles your children can pick up. One of which is Molluscum contagiosum. Molluscum contagiosum or ‘water warts’ is a common and relatively harmless (but highly contagious) viral infection of the skin. The spots are easily recognised, and are small dome-like shiny pimples often grouped together. Molluscum contagiosum occurs most frequently in children and young adults, most frequently pre-schoolers aged 1-4 years. The condition usually clears within 12-18 months without treatment but can last longer and causes those affected much embarrassment and self-consciousness. MolluDab is a new and proven treatment for Molluscum Contagiosum, available on prescription or from the pharmacist.”

So, which children’s health niggles had you not heard of before becoming a parent that you wish you had? What advice or information would you pass on about children’s health niggles to other Mumsnetters? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts below will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £150 voucher for Jojo Maman Bebe.

The comments on this thread may be used (anonymously) by MolluDab in future marketing material, so please only post if you’re happy with this.

Thanks and good luck,

Croup is terrifying, especially the first time one of your children has it. Horrible barking cough that just seems to never end.

I was aware of nits, but live in fear of worms, impetigo and any other highly contagious nasties like hand foot and mouth.

tabbaz123 · 08/01/2015 06:24

I think hand foot and mouth was the biggest one that took me by surprise. Even armed with books etc it is one that never seemed to have much said about it.

barbsbarbs · 08/01/2015 06:57

how to bring down a temperature, you have to learb as you go along, but if i'd known certain things then it would have been easier

maryandbuzz1 · 08/01/2015 07:02

Certainly constipation as my son suffered from this. Then the other which drove me mad were head lice!

TracyKNixon · 08/01/2015 07:13

Nits and thread worms! They both make me feel sick!

peaf · 08/01/2015 07:34

Croup as well!

cendboy · 08/01/2015 07:38

Croup! that cough is scary!

hiddenmichelle · 08/01/2015 07:39

tongue ties - my son has one and I never even knew it existed!

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 08/01/2015 08:03

Tongue tie
Reflux
Molloscum
Febrile convulsions
Glue ear

Some advance warning on all of the above would have been really useful.

Trooperslane · 08/01/2015 08:36

That as soon as dd went to nursery, we'd all be sick ALL THE TIME.

Since middle of August there hasn't been a week that we've been well.

cluckyhen · 08/01/2015 08:56

Constipation! My poor DD was BF but was exceptionally ill at 10 weeks and lost lots of weight due to this.

And worms!!! (DS!)

funkyfish586 · 08/01/2015 09:35

Not that it would have changed my decision to have children but i wish someone would have told me just how many colds children get... its tons.. In fact in the winter they just seem to have a 2 month long cold!

southernsun · 08/01/2015 10:03

Our DS had to have his tonsils and adenoids removed due to sleep apnoea which we were clueless about. His breathing when asleep would be so erratic and he would often stop breathing for a few seconds, it scared the life out of us as we didn't know what was going on. It wasn't until an out of hours doctors trip (having spoken to several doctors before) that it was explained to us properly that he wouldn't ever stop breathing completely and what was actually happening in his body. We ended up having to fight to get the operation but once he had it he became a completely different child with so much more energy and a bigger appetite where he could breath and sleep easier. Apparently its quite a common thing but something we were clueless about.

Eye tests at an early age would have been good advice, it was only when my 5 year old son who was struggling with reading that a treatable eye condition (astigmatism) was diagnosed by a simple eye test!

claremmm · 08/01/2015 10:16

Hand foot and mouth. Took my wee one to a&e because he couldn't swallow. Now I have it too! ??

angiesandhu1 · 08/01/2015 10:26

loss of appetite. I wish i was told early on not to worry too much when your child isnt really eating much.

angiesandhu1 · 08/01/2015 10:27

oh and glue ear!!

MaryWestmacott · 08/01/2015 10:43

Hand foot and mouth here too, not heard of it until DC1 got it.

sscrase · 08/01/2015 10:45

Molluscum virus. Dreadful rash that my son had and the doctors said could take 18months to clear up completely. Only through googling did we find that Silver spray worked brilliantly and it was gone within a couple of weeks.

Purplehonesty · 08/01/2015 11:04

The viral rashes that they get every single time they are ill for the first year! Made me panic each time until I realised what it was.

Hand foot and mouth - I thought it was a cow thing(!) and dd was floored with it, so poorly and barely ate for two weeks.

KittyKat88 · 08/01/2015 11:16

Newborn conjunctivities - the drops were horrible to apply and caused me and my baby so much distress, and then I was told by a friend to just use a few drops of breast milk - that worked a treat, I couldn't believe it! So much for conventional medicine! I can honestly say, I've never heard of Molluscum contagiosum though! SO glad I read this thread, now I feel a bit more prepared if either of my DDs start exhibiting those symptoms! Cheers Mumsnet!!

Sleepyhoglet · 08/01/2015 11:40

Tongue tie when they are babies

Pmliu · 08/01/2015 12:26

when she had a rash all over her body, luckily I had my sister in law to confide in who confirmed it's quite normal for new borns to have this common rash when I sent her a photo of it. It cleared in a few days

MargeryDaw · 08/01/2015 12:34

Tongue tie, croup and cows milk protein allergy

aless02 · 08/01/2015 12:51

NITS- YUCK!!
