TalkTalk has asked us to find out how Mumsnetters enjoy their favourite TV.

Here’s what TalkTalk says, "Nothing beats sinking into the sofa, putting your feet up and switching off in front of your favourite TV show after a long day. But have you ever wondered what your TV favourites say about you?

We have created a fun quiz to help you find out. With YouView from TalkTalk now being Britain's fastest growing TV service, it's quickly becoming the home of family entertainment. We questioned families to uncover what the nation enjoys most about TV, and see how catch up, the ability to pause, rewind and record live TV, and instantly watch on demand movies, sport and kids programs have improved our viewing.

We found eight different types of TV viewers or 'TV Tribes' ranging from 'Family Guys' who enjoy nothing more than bringing the family together to watch their favourite programmes to 'Secret Viewers' who tell everyone they watch the likes of Newsnight but secretly revel in trash TV."

So, first off, take TalkTalk’s TV tribes quiz here and let us know which tribe you belong to. Do you think it’s accurate? How do you watch TV with your family? We'd love to hear about it so please post your comments below.

Everyone who shares their TV viewing habits on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

I'm a compliant. It sounds just like me, iPad in one hand, knitting (or whatever this week's craze is!) in the other :-)

im the me timer - yes im lucky enough to get some me time for tv, and i love certain programmes which i hate to miss, tv relaxes me. me and the kids have other programmes that we enjoy together as well, i tape programmes and do catch up as well, my favourites are cooking programmes and anitque programmes and a good gritty drama hate the programmes the kids watch I Carly etc all it is is pure noise, they love them though, and i love come dine with me

I took the quiz and i am the 'me-timer!' I 100% agree that i hate being interrupted when watching my favorite shows in fact i make a big thing of it so everyone knows i mustn't be disturbed! I sigh, pause the TV whilst they are talking and then rewind to where i was before they started!!!
I do love box sets, especially comedies! I like to watch these either alone or with friends/family. I think they are good entertainment when you have people over :) I do use TV as my escape so its also correct in saying watching it in a separate room for peace and quiet! If my partner and kids are in the same room and they aren't interested in what i am watching then there isn't much point in trying to watch something so i will go and watch it in my bedroom! I do NEVER miss an episode of my favorite show! I went on holiday and then moved house last year so missed a few months of Eastenders. I had to catch up on EVERY episode on you tube and then iplayer!

All in all everything is correct and scarily my perfect match!

Well done TalkTalk!! Grin

Apparently I'm a "Me timer". I like to watch TV on my own with no disturbances; I hate it when people interrupt. I download and binge on boxsets. I love watching TV in a separate room for a bit of peace and quiet. I often watch TV on a laptop or tablet with my headphones on and love to get stuck into a good TV drama, watching episodes back to back. I never miss an episode of my favourite shows.

34% of people belong to this TV Tribe

Apparently ... However, have to say I don't tend to watch things on my laptop. True that I don't like to miss an episode of my favourite show though. We do watch tv together every night, but equally I enjoy the chance to have the tv to myself and watch something trashy on my own. We do like watching box sets like Lost, Friends, blackadder and Black Books Smile Particularly enjoy a cup of tea whilst watching tv Smile

I'm a me timer apparently

I think that is pretty accurate. I only watch things I really want to watch, usually download or box sets, and I hate it if I miss anything. I have to pause it if someone starts talking to me. I only watch an hour or so of tv about 4 times a week so there is no point watching rubbish. I like documentaries (most recently Mary Beard, Lucy worsely and Stephen fry) and quality uk/us drama (just finished peaky blinders and started house of cards). Early evening I used to like a bit of lifestyle stuff like come dine with me and wife swap, but these days if I am watching tv in the day it is usually octonauts or a kids movie with DS

Forgot, also love British comedy. Have been working my way through Miranda series 1,2 and 3 while giving DS2 last feed of the day. Oh, and watch the news sometimes, but more often look at BBC news ap instead.

I'm a Social Networker which is partially accurate since while watching TV downstairs I would usually be pottering on the computer as well unless it is, for example, the season finale of something I have been watching. I also do like to have the family together to watch things so have a large element of The Family Guy particularly when DS is home from University - we all love catching up on our favourite programmes together. Last thing at night I like to watch TV in bed though to allow my brain to switch off.

Apparently I'm a 'me timer' but I think it's wrong! I hate watching tv really, only stuff like question time if I can be bothered to concentrate, or total rot like judge Judy if I need distracting. I loathe sitting in front of a countering screen and am often found switching it off and demanding the kids go outside! (Also try to do this to dh too).

BlackeyedSusan · 13/03/2014 23:20

not at all accurate.

the children watch a lot of cbeebies. I only get to watch a little tv. I only like to watch things that I really enjoy as I get so little time to wwtch uninterupted. I am ofetn perched on an upright chair near to the tv so I can hear it. (it only has one volume setting now) and see it as it is a portable cathode ray tv. anything but elitist.

nerysw · 14/03/2014 06:33

I'm a 'Me Timer' which came as a bit of a surprise since I don't get much of it! I watch TV with the other half when the kids are in bed and we watch things on iplayer or through Amazon Prime Instant to wind down in the short bit of Cbeebies free time we get.

Report
RubySparks · 14/03/2014 08:23

Another 'me timer' which is probably true now that kids are teenage there are fewer shows we watch as a family as they are doing other things. I watch a lot more on iplayer or Netflix now rather than just what happens to be on.

I'm a 'Family Guy'. Not sure about that really, there isn't a great deal I sit and watch with the whole family, just Saturday Night Takeaway and the Sport Relief dog thing that's on at the moment!

I tend to watch a lot of films and series I've recorded.

Moodykat · 14/03/2014 11:29

Apparently I'm "the compliant" too. I don't like it! I tend to dictate what is on the telly, if it is on!

I'm a Family Guy apparently. I don't think it's even remotely accurate. We have the 24 hr news on quite a lot, but we spend a lot of time doing other things while it's on - cooking, reading, MNing, cleaning etc. I used to study with the tv on as it helped me focus - I need to tune noise out to really concentrate!

We do spend evenings in the sitting room together, but none of us are really focussed on the tv though there are some things we might actually pay attention to, news, documentaries, the odd serial. On the whole, we are all doing other things as well, studying, reading, chatting etc.

Me-timer here. Very accurate.

Just me and my ipad usually - peace and quiet.

Family time is the occasional film or period drama. Can't bear the adverts.

apparantly I am a Me-Timer. but I live with 5yo DD, so once she is in bed, the tv is all mine anyway! I usually am surfing the net whilst watching tv. I watch stuff that is recorded on Sky+ rather than live tv most of the time.

I watch a wide variety of stuff from documentaries to soaps and trashy films

Report
hareinthemoon · 14/03/2014 13:47

Me-timer. I guess that's because the kids don't agree with my taste in shows and leave the room.

Report

OK, I am an elitist. Actually I couldn't answer the quiz because my low level of watching....about 10 hours a year, appeared in none of the categories. I don't know...I just don't need Tv anymore. Big live news events are the only thing I watch....and the Eurovision Song Contest. Does that make me elitist, super elitist or just busy doing summat else.

I'm an Elitist

"I don't watch TV for the sake of it, and never just have the television on in the background, but I love documentaries and learning new things by watching TV. I only watch an hour or two of television a day and can't stand reality TV and soaps. I like using catch up to record my programmes so I don’t need to watch the rest. I would not describe myself as a television watcher, even though I do get something out of watching TV."

Some of this statement is true. I certainly don't watch tv for the sake of and I do like documentaries but I also enjoy American shows such as Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead etc. I generally watch on Netflix or catch up though.

I definitely can't stand soaps or reality tv shows but I wouldn't say that I wasn't a television watcher, I'm just a picky one who likes other forms of entertainment too!

Family guy for me.

Its slightly true, me and DH do have a routine of what TV we watch and when, but only on a night. The rest of the time I would say Im definately a compliant. Im usually sat on my kindle or laptop (if Im not busy doing something else) while he has whatever he watches on TV. Sometimes I half watch.

All we watch are American shows (eg Arrow, Grimm, Walking Dead etc), Saturday night progams (X Factor, The Voice, Lottery Quiz) and comedy (8 out of 10 cats, Celebrity Juice, Modern Family).

Cant stand soaps, although used to watch a few of them, but then got bored. Having said that Tues and Thurs nights I do go to the gym and I have started watching Eastenders with the subtitles on.
