Are you a Netflix subscriber? Share your experiences - £250 voucher up for grabs

Netflix would like to know what Mumsnetters think of their entertainment subscription service.

If you currently use or have used Netflix in the past, what do you think? Do you use Netflix on a regular basis? If so, how do you use it - do you mainly watch movies or are you addicted to a particular TV series? When do you watch on your own, with your partner or with your family?

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?

If you have never tried Netflix before, what are your impressions of it? Is it something you'd try? If so, why? If not, why not?

Everyone who adds their thoughts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Love2Shop voucher (this prize draw has already taken place).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw,

MNHQ

We love Netflix here. Fabulous series, though perhaps not enough film choice. But for the price we pay, I feel we get good value for money. I like how easy it is to navigate, and I like that we can all have our own profiles. DS (3) likes having his own little section.

Not sure how I would be surviving maternity leave without Netflix as it means whatever time of the day (or more usually night) I'm up alone nursing or soothing I can watch something on my iPad which doesn't require a lobotomy.

Had netflix for over a year and love the box sets - breaking bad, OITNB, House of Cards (very excited to hear about S2)...I could go on. Also watched a lot of OBEM in the run up to my due date!

My lo is only 4months so not ally used kids section in anger yet, but very useful when nieces and nephews visit and need something to entertain them - couldn't believe all of the Disney content available making me a very cool auntie.

We've converted at least 3 neighbours to netflix, as even with the poor internet connections in our street, netflix is a reliable service when other streaming apps aren't - iplayer might be showing insufficient bandwidth while Netflix runs on two different devices.

I'm getting gift subscription for my sister & bil for Christmas as I think better value than buying the Breaking Bad box set...I only wish I was on commission!

PenguinSalute · 07/12/2013 14:09

I haven't been a Netflix user before but am getting a subscription for DP for Christmas (so really it's a gift for me as well!). My impressions are that of similar products, friends have said it has the best range. I see people have said films can take a while to be added but I like going the cinema as an occasional treat so not too worries about that. I work funny hours and DP works shifts as a policeman, so we can be in together at times when there is often not a lot on- looking forward to being able to catch up on series together and not being restricted by the 7 day deadline of our Virgin catch up tv.

Regular subscriber, use it pretty regularly. We watch some movies, but mainly watch the TV series, particularly love Dexter and House of Cards (and very excited about series 2 coming next Feb) I watch it on my own, with partner and also family.

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?
We like to watch films/telly together both with the DC and as a couple.

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?
Really like it, it's nice that the kids have a section that is all child friendly, they like to be able to chose their own stuff, although the programmes that they really like are not available on it yet.

wintertimeisfun · 07/12/2013 20:06

i will forever love netflix for bringing me the joys of both dexter and breaking bad however their film selection is disappointing

ChanelTunel · 07/12/2013 20:54

I subscribed to Netflix today, out of interest generated on here.
The lack of an index to either TV,or Movies,is limiting to the viewing choice.
The most annoying factor is that both of the films that I watched kept blacking my screen out, about every 35 minutes. This has never happened before,on any other site.
If I select a series to watch,it would be appreciated if the first episode doesn't immediately start playing. I've maybe already seen it...

3asAbird · 08/12/2013 11:56

I recently signed up wtch on netbook but cant get sound and film in sync keeps jumping.

In my house we loooove netflix. We use it everyday...and I mean everyday! When we pick up our daughter from nursery we pop a childrens film or cartoon series on, for a bit of winding down time. It is usually Thomas the tank engine that we have to watch...which I now know all the words to, but still, we get variety for films and kids shows. There is no way that we would be able to afford all these films. We also use it on a night, after my darling daughter is asleep, to watch a film snuggled on the sofa, or catch up on some TV shows.

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?
At the end of the day, entertainment in our family is a 'family' thing. We enjoy all getting snuggled on the sofa, or in bed, watching a film after a action packed day with work and nursery and trips out on weekends. Netflix gives us variety and also allows me to watch films that I would usually consider watching, but as long as I wasn't buying the DVD...in case I didn't like it lol

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?
It's all about Thomas the tank engine, Barney the dinosaur and disney.... anything!

One qualm would be that the majority of the time...if it isn't on Netflix..it is on Lovefilm :( and we can't be buying both lol £6 a month is spot on though!!

LadyGoneGaga · 09/12/2013 13:59

I think it's really good. The kids bit is greta and I really like how they have a seperate kids and adults experience so the kids can browse without the risk of seein something violent.

We loved it for series like house of Cards and currently addicted to Breaking Bad. Would love to see Game of thrones on there though.

We use it on the main TV through the Wii.

Entertainment is pretty much a constant in our house!

odi1 · 09/12/2013 19:19

We use Netflix on apple TV and iPad. Mainly watch US TV shows and the odd movie. The choice TV shows is a lot better than the movies. We are using it less now than when we first subscribed but looking to get into some new TV series when on mat leave. Entertainment helps to relax and unwind after work and netflix helps us to that.

MmeButterfly · 09/12/2013 19:32

I like Netflix and my two girls (1 and 3) also like it. I am grateful that they have split up the kids section from the adult section as images that pop up can be inappropriate so thank you for that.

However, even on the kids section, some of the content is a bit dubious. For example, we started watching Winx Club which was immediately attractive to my 3 year old and I hadn't seen it before. When we watched it i found it completely inappropriate and borderline sexual in some places. But there is no guidance as to what is what. This was sat on the shelf next to Dora the Explorer and Charlie and Lola so how are we supposed to discriminate?

We like to watch both films and tv dramas. We were addicted to Breaking Bad and were so grateful that you had all the episodes. But having browsed what else there is in the same vein, nothing seems to hit the spot. Hoping you will get the next season of Game of Thrones when it comes out.

MrsClauswearsspanx · 09/12/2013 19:44

We love Netflix!

I watch it: every Blush day, especially the late 90's/early 00's teenage dramas.

DP likes it for films, especially indie ones.

The DCs LOVE the choice of kids' shows and with so much choice Netflix helps to prevent squabbles over who gets to watch what.

I discovered it from discussion right here on Mumsnet and realised we could stream it through the PS3.

I actually phoned up to cancel our Sky subscription because we barely watch it now. If you could get Game of Thrones I would have another baby and call it Net or Netty!!!

curiouselle · 09/12/2013 19:56

When my dh suggested netflix, I thought oh no more money on something we don't use (like lovefilm)! However I am converted.

We now NEVER watch 'normal' tele. We always have a series to follow and a few films to see. I use the kids section so my little girl can watch elmo and I can cook. And my guilty pleasure is watching 'Jonathan Creek' on my phone while I do the dishes (as I am well cool!).

Runswithsquirrels · 09/12/2013 20:01

I'd like older films available. Lovefilm have a huge catalogue of classics from the forties to date.
Do love watching all the TV series in one go and love it they are now producing. House of cards v g.

PuddingAndHotMilk · 10/12/2013 12:37

I love Netflix - it has transformed my life as I spend a lot of time on the sofa feeding my newborn and holding her upright for 30 mins after every feed for her reflux.
She also only sleeps on me. I therefore watch about 6 hours a day!!
I love the TV box sets and like that each next episode runs on from the previous so I don't get stuck if I need both hands for my LO

As she gets older I'm sure the children's films will be well used too!!

freckledleopard · 10/12/2013 12:39

I've just started subscribing to Netflix as I'd read so much about Breaking Bad that I wanted to watch it, and Love Film Instant (which I subscribe to) doesn't have it.

So far I've only watched Breaking Bad and Dexter, so can't comment on whether the film or other entertainment selection is better or worse than on Love Film Instant.

theenchantedhood · 10/12/2013 19:50

I had a month free where I watched 4 seasons of 'Dexter', then I subscribed to watch another couple of series'. I have watched 'Breaking Bad' all of them bar the new series obviously! This has been watching on my IPad. The quality is fab and I would not end the subscription for now as I watch so many genre of film or series. Some of the documentaries on there have been great watching. I know I should be crafting or knitting - something. But, Netflix has got me through a bout of depressing, time. It has helped me switch off - and I can pause and it's back on whenever I press the button it's back..
The minor frustration is when a film I specifically want to watch isn't available! :)
On the whole - no spammy emails and connect when I want to - great!

I can't recommend it more..

TheEnchantedHood Age 40 :)

maemaesmummy · 11/12/2013 10:29

I love Netflix, we have been subscribers for over a year...we watch a lot of series on there, without having to wait for the next episode.

We also watch it when we are in the USA and love that it swaps between regions depending on where you are

LowLu · 11/12/2013 13:17

We have a netflix subscription and mostly watch on the iPad (when the DC aren't using it!) We've just got Virgin Media and have found out we can watch Netfix on that too which is great.

Mainly watch tv series, as with 2 small children I don't have the energy to watch a whole film on an evening. And once I've found a series I like I'll watch that exclusively until I've seen all episodes.

It would be great to have a way to save favourites on the ipad interface. As I'll go through and find things I'll watch to watch later.

The DC don't use it, as they are still at the age where cbeebies is tv of choice.

mjmooseface · 11/12/2013 16:48

As much as I love Netflix and talked it up MASSIVELY in a previous comment... I will say that I did have one pretty major discrepancy with them... I decided to blast through all seasons of Lost having never watched it and I had just 7 episodes left to go and it disappeared!!! GAH!!

One thing I'd like to see changed is maybe having an indicator of how long a show is going to be available for, so you know what time scale you have to watch it in. That would be so helpful a few months back! I was super gutted!! But, that's the one issue I've had with it since it launched over here so that's pretty good success rate in my books! :D

cheesybake · 12/12/2013 22:30

I subscribe to netflix, used to have love film but cancelled it and netflix is so much better.
We very rarely watch tv any more, are hooked on a series at a time. Just finished the amazing breaking bad and can't wait for the next series of orange is the new black.
My son loves the kids channel, only complaint would be where has dumbo gone? We have had lots of screaming matches because it isn't there any more.
Only improvement would be to add more newer films (and game of thrones!)
It's not often something lives up to it's hype nowadays but netflix exceeds expectations!

Mostly watch with my partner and we watch probably every other day. We tend to work through series first of all Breaking Bad, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Would really like some more up to date films on Netflix

What role does Entertainment play in your family's life and how does Netflix fit in?

My LO doesn't really watch tv at the moment. We watch in the evening to relax.

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?

He hasn't watched it

If you have never tried Netflix before, what are your impressions of it? Is it something you'd try? If so, why? If not, why not?

We have signed up more than once for the free trial and both times we have been disappointed with the choice and de-regged. We have wanted to watch good films 'on demand' as a family every now and then.

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?

In a household with teens we have too many different screens so everyone ends up watching different things at the same time. Watching a film or TV series together is one of the only ways we share enteretainment these days.

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?

My dcs are too old for this.
