Netflix would like to know what Mumsnetters think of their entertainment subscription service.

If you currently use or have used Netflix in the past, what do you think? Do you use Netflix on a regular basis? If so, how do you use it - do you mainly watch movies or are you addicted to a particular TV series? When do you watch on your own, with your partner or with your family?

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?

If you have never tried Netflix before, what are your impressions of it? Is it something you'd try? If so, why? If not, why not?

Everyone who adds their thoughts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Love2Shop voucher (this prize draw has already taken place).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw,

MNHQ

We absolutely love Netflix. What a bargain, it's so inexpensive. We have done away with the tv license, so Netflix pays for itself and then some - and is better than mainstream tv anyway. No rubbish adverts, just straight to the stuff we want to watch.
We also use the Who Is Watching profiles, and it's nice the DS has his own little area.
House Of Cards was brilliant, well done Netflix. We just finished 30 Rock and that was wonderful too. Am fast becoming a Netflix addict. :)

I'm recently new to netflixs and am into my 4th month of subscribing. I watch it via the iPad, which I take to bed once the dc are also in bed. As you can watch Netflix on two systems via one account, Ds1 has now set it up to watch via his Xbox. I like being able to see what he has been watching from my iPad. It been great recommending old films for him to watch and just searching through them in netflix (he's recently discovered Forest Gump). I love gorging on a whole series of something in one go. (Orange is the new black was my last series I watched entirely In a weekend!) Ds2 (7) knows how to navigate to the kids section and watch his cartoons so it's quite easy to work your way around the site.
Since having found netflixs I've actually canceled my sky subscription as far more to watch on netflix, at times (and places) suitable to me, and saving me money. It's much more cost effective!

Fletch049 · 29/11/2013 10:04

We use Netflix every week, we love it, we changed from lovefilm as it is easier to just watch the films online instead of waiting for dvds to get posted to us. My daughter has watched some disney films while my oh watchs tv programs the only thing I would like to see is everything that is available on the US Netflix be available for the UK as the US have a lot more variety.

CheeseTMouse · 29/11/2013 13:52

I've not tried netflix. I did try out lovefilm, and we quickly discovered that whilst there are one or two things we wanted to watch, we didn't use it often enough to justify the cost. With competition from the iplayer I think I would struggle to justify the additional cost at the moment.

Steffanoid · 29/11/2013 18:56

we have netflix, we prefer it to lovefilm as it has more american shows, my lo is only 5 months so doesnt watch tv Wink

Klapton27 · 30/11/2013 08:41

I do love netflicks as we don't have sky. I mainly watch tv series- eg Breaking Bad we were addicted to! I was using it to watch Dexter and I am so cross that the last two seasons are not on there!
I wish there were some newer films on there too but I do love it for the tv shows and hope that they keep on coming!

PollyP0429 · 30/11/2013 18:59

I use my brother's Netflix account to watch a bit of everything on the Wii U. I recently watched all Netfilx had of Doc Martin, but I was disappointed to find it's now over 2 seasons behind! I also found out that Netflix did have this series completely up to date at one point but removed the last 2 seasons - I have no idea whether this holds true through other box sets but I'm definitely less inclined to watch any others in case I come across this issue again.

The movie selection isn't bad, but I think it could do with more regular updating. There are some excellent films available but a lot of them are getting very old now and I'd like some new material. What I love about the movie section are the unusual titles. I've not long watched a documentary that otherwise I don't think you can find in the UK. Very impressed.

As for children, since my only child won't be here until early next year I can't say I use the children's section effectively.

I'm aware that the price of Netflix is quite reasonable but I think if I was paying for it, I wouldn't bother. My husband and I aren't huge fans of TV, only watch the latest films and Netflix doesn't offer the TV series' that I'd like to watch. If I really like a particular film I would rather go and buy my own copy - that way I don't have to worry about a favourite title being removed.

I have to admit though, I am impressed with the use of internet (you really MUST have unlimited though) I think I've had buffering about 3 times in the whole time I've been using the service and rather than stop a programme to load it, Netflix will usually drop a quality setting instead. I'd rather this than wait 5 minutes to watch 2 minutes of programme.

So overall, I could take it or leave it really

DustBunnyFarmer · 01/12/2013 21:07

We've been subscribed to Netflix since the summer. It was great being able to watch all of Breaking Bad in one spectacular binge over about 6 weeks, then the final episodes as they were released.

I then got into Weeds, but was disappointed that Netflix stopped at S3.

My main bugbear is the slow churn on films. I watch romcoms to unwind when I'm tired, stressed or can't sleep. I watched all the ones I was interested in months ago (and a few more besides) & they are rarely updated. I notice it in romcoms because that's our mostly heavily used section, but it has flagged up the general problem with Netflix & one of the reasons why we might unsubcribe sooner rather than later. A lot of the films are pretty old and 'subprime' (straight to video calibre) too!

Snoozie101 · 01/12/2013 22:49

Don't have it. Never really looked into it. Don't watch much tv live these days. Enjoy box sets which we can watch in our own time.

ProfYaffle · 02/12/2013 07:51

We signed up about a week ago. I originally signed up when Netflix first started and left after the trial month because there was very little on there. However, since Blockbuster online went belly up I accidentally re-signed up (meant to do lovefilm Blush)

We're really impressed and have decided to stay - for a little while at least. I love the TV series, we're watching Breaking Bad and Hemlock Grove at the moment.

The films aren't great though which is a problem for us. I won't sign up to Sky and we live rurally so no DVD stores and miles away from nearest cinema. Trying to access recent film is nigh on impossible, we're trying to find an online/postal service but even Lovefilm only gets films months after they've been in the shops.

Once we've watched all the TV we want to watch, I'm not sure what'll keep us with Netflix.

Snoozie - Netflix is like having access to a huge number of boxsets. The whole series is available to watch online instantly, you watch at your own pace.

noidles · 02/12/2013 17:00

If you currently use or have used Netflix in the past, what do you think?

I signed up to Netflix when it first came to the UK, and at the time I thought the selection was terrible. I cancelled before my 30 day free trial ended.

However, I just signed up again last week (after reading the Gossip Girl thread), and I'm not pretty excited by it! There's loads more choice now, and I also can now watch through my TiVo, which is just so convenient. This weekend I watched a few Christmas films on it while putting my decorations up, and I'm really keen to get watching Orange is the New Black.

Wish I'd known Breaking Bad was on there before I went out and bought the full box sets.

Do you use Netflix on a regular basis? If so, how do you use it - do you mainly watch movies or are you addicted to a particular TV series?

Well, as I said, I only signed up again last week, but I hope to use it quite regularly from now on. Our viewing habits have changed a lot over the last year - particularly since we got a TiVo box. We now watch most things on catch up or streamed. So I imagine Netflix will add to this.

When do you watch on your own, with your partner or with your family?
I tend to watch films alone and boxsets with my DP. We only watch any TV in the evenings.

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?

My DP and I love to watch box sets together in the evening, so I guess Netflix will only add to this.

ILiveInAPineappleCoveredInSnow · 03/12/2013 17:29

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?

We subscribed to Netflix when my oldest son was ill with chickenpox, as he was having lots of disturbed nights and as really unwell, so at least he could enjoy a tv program while he was feeling terrible and snuggling on the couch.

When my DH was hospitalised for 3 weeks a few months ago, due to an injury, it was a total godsend for him, as it allowed him to while away hours of boredom in a hospital bed, without paying the ripoff prices of the hospital tv - £6 a month is great value in comparison!

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?

My ds1 is 6 years old, and often watches his favourite programs on the ipad. In fact, he has recently discovered that there are Lego cartoons on there which haven't even been on TV, and is now the envy of his friends due to this as they are all massive Lego fans!
It's a great incentive for him to do homework and chores as he is rewarded with Netflix time.
He gets frustrated when we are in the car and going through a poor signal area, as the signal and therefore netflix drops out!

What would be an improvement in the kids section however would be the ability to lock it so that you required a password to access the adult/ non-kids section.

Also if you could download the program you were watching at the time to compensate for the signal dropping out, that would be really useful on journeys.

LifeCoachMum · 04/12/2013 04:44

I have been a Netflix subscriber for several months and use it on a daily basis.

I have a PS3 (mid-life crisis... Honest...) and tend to stick something on when I go to bed as a "winding down" mechanism.

I've mostly watched the tv series options as they tend to be a little shorter than watching a film.

My favourites to date have been Castle, Fringe, 24 and The Killing.

My 11 year old son loves watching the kids option, his favourite still being Spongebob Squarepants. He has his own PS3 in his room so he can watch his programmes whilst I watch mine - a brilliant feature that is lacking in some of the other streaming providers.

I do think it would be better if there were more titles to choose from. having said that there is still lots on my list that I have yet to watch so they can't be doing that bad as far as choice goes.

Would definitely recommend it to friends/family, and can't see me cancelling my subscription any time soon!

Overall I'd give Netflix an overall 9/10.

Geneticsbunny · 04/12/2013 11:23

I have a net flicks subscription and I think that the film ratings are very skewed. I assume this is because there is a high number of teenaged boys with subscriptions as gory horror, action films and anything with nudity in seems to get 4 or 5 stars. Obviously this is a generalisation but it makes it difficult to choose films especially if you like action horror films which actually have good stories.

Geneticsbunny · 04/12/2013 11:31

If you currently use or have used Netflix in the past, what do you think?
See above and also could do with more film choice not aimed at teenaged boys.

Do you use Netflix on a regular basis? If so, how do you use it - do you mainly watch movies or are you addicted to a particular TV series? When do you watch on your own, with your partner or with your family?
Mostly use it for films both with my husband in the evenings and during the day for the children. I think the selection of childrens films and program's is great.

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?
We do lots of activities together. Watching films together is one of these. We maybe watch a film together as a family once a fortnight.

Lighthousekeeping · 04/12/2013 17:50

I've had it for about a year. The film selection is ok but could do with extending. I think the American version is much better and I don't understand why they get much more choice with films and tv shows like Greys Anatomy. Its really disappointing when you use the search engine and the show comes up only to tell you it can't be watched in the uk. It's goid value for money. I just wished I knew how to connect it from my iPad to the telly. I would really downgrade my sky then.

DinoSnores · 04/12/2013 21:13

I don't have it and have never tried it, but I am interested in reading the separate kids section so I control what they have access to. Perhaps I'll think about it next time I have a newborn and am spending hours BFing! Right now we just don't have the time to sit down to watch things.

NicNak71 · 04/12/2013 22:32

I did subscribe to Netflix earlier this year and we used it for a few months. However, my connection/signal was usually quite poor and it would just cut out part way through a programme or else it wouldn't connect to the selected programme to play it. Eventually I decided that it wasn't worth the money and cancelled my subscription.
That being said, I did think the choice of films and kids programmes available was very good and if it had worked for me, I probably would have kept it.

juebloggs · 05/12/2013 15:05

We have had Netflix for a couple of years now, and must use it every day. DD1 & 2 (both teens) and DS (6) are big fans. Like that we can watch on our own and together using iPads and through Apple TV.

Particularly love the Kids area, big thumbs up from the boy who doesn't really have any concept of "normal" viewing - i.e. this is what's on so this is what you have to watch!
Films not so great for new releases but I can normally find some soppy film to watch when ironing…………..

But just BRILLIANT for TV sets - Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black - just love them!
Really enjoyed Netflix's House of Cards this year too - Kevin Spacey - what's not to like? Love to see more like this for some serious "binge" TV.

In fact, having thought about how much we all use the service it's difficult to imagine not having it!

GoodbyeRubyTuesday · 05/12/2013 15:26

I had Netflix a couple of years ago but gave up as I had run out of things I wanted to watch. I signed up again recently as I wanted to watch Covert Affairs. I really enjoyed that but then I couldn't find much else I wanted to watch. I've now subscribed to Lovefilm instead where I get DVDs and online viewing as I've found that none of the online only services I've tried (Lovefilm Instant, Netflix and Wuaki TV) have much that I want to watch. I enjoyed the first two seasons of Covert Affairs so much that I have bought season 3 and 4 from iTunes as I couldn't wait for them to become available online Blush if they'd become available on Netflix sooner than Lovefilm Instant I would also have swapped back to Netflix, my addiction is fairly strong BlushBlush in a few months I will probably be bored of the selection on Lovefilm and move back to Netflix, especially if they add any more programmes that I am interested in (later seasons of Modern family would be good! Grin)

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?

I live alone and as I'm recovering from a serious illness I am not able to get out as much as I'd like so I spend a fair amount of time watching television series or films. I prefer series to films in general. I don't have a television so all my viewing is online. There isn't anything on catch up services at the moment that interests me.

daisydaisy11 · 05/12/2013 17:28

I used netflix in the past and found the service to be good value for money. I like that they have an android app (unlike lovefilm) and it also comes as an inbuilt app on my tv. Negatives; most of the films available are rather old but that is OK as we missed most of them in the cinema first time round. Am currently with Lovefilm now but would consider switching back to netflix in the future -especially if they rolled out an attractive offer :)

Letitsnow9 · 06/12/2013 06:15

I love how easy it is to watch on the iPad but think the selection is very poor. American Netflix sounds amazing, I wish ours was like it. Orange is the new black is my favourite thing on it and I'm looking forward to series 2

MightilyOats · 06/12/2013 11:47

Has been a godsend for DS - Thomas obsessive and there are 4 seasons of Thomas and Friends on there. Also like Bob the builder, Charlie and lola etc, so plenty of toddler-friendly content.

From an adult perspective I would like to see more blockbusters/recent films on there - choice is usually a bit random.

Dwerf · 06/12/2013 12:15

I've only had it a few days but we've watched loads on it. Really disappointed to see it doesn't have Game Of thrones and The walking dead. And the choice is so much less than the US version.

I'm using the tivo app, I don't think you can set up individual profiles on that. The kids section is brilliant, no chance of them seeing what they shouldn't.

Bigspring · 06/12/2013 13:08

I subscribe to Netflix... We originally had a month trial so we could watch the end of breaking bad, but I have since started watching lots of the American series so decided to continue the subscription. For box sets its brilliant, the film choice is limited though...
My son who is nearly 4 loves using and watching cartoons on the designated kids section.... This is a great option to have
Everyone in the family use it, sometimes together other times alone..
