Are you a Netflix subscriber? Share your experiences - £250 voucher up for grabs

Netflix would like to know what Mumsnetters think of their entertainment subscription service.

If you currently use or have used Netflix in the past, what do you think? Do you use Netflix on a regular basis? If so, how do you use it - do you mainly watch movies or are you addicted to a particular TV series? When do you watch on your own, with your partner or with your family?

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?

If you have never tried Netflix before, what are your impressions of it? Is it something you'd try? If so, why? If not, why not?

Everyone who adds their thoughts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Love2Shop voucher (this prize draw has already taken place).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw,

MNHQ

Netflix is brilliant.

New mums are now denied the hours of early o'clock loneliness that I and my peers endured. It's just a sanity saver - and, the series like Orange and BB are absolutely brilliant.

My complaint is that I keep missing Question Time as I'm watching something from NF. Oops.

kellestar · 23/11/2013 21:57

We've recently subscribed and some of it is great.

A chance to watch some great series for both me, DH and my 2.11 yo DD.

Wish there was a bigger selection of new release films, seasonal films and new TV series.

We are on a 30 day free trial, we are still undecided as to whether to extend this.

I would love to see more regular updates on new additions, maybe the ability to 'register' your interest in a series.

We mainly use on our Roku

Witchesbrewandbiscuits · 23/11/2013 22:10

we use netflix all the time. mainly evenings and weekends. we love family time at home which usually involves a film!

we love that we can watch a film or a tv series and the dc watch the dedicated kids section, which they absolutely love.

def worth the money I think and I always recommend.

Southsearocks · 23/11/2013 22:46

I've had Lovefilm for ages and didn't feel the need for another provider but then I wanted to watch Breaking Bad so took out the month long trial of Netflix.

As it turned out we are now subscribed to both. Netflix is being used more so we may drop the other subscription. Netflix is especially good for kids and that is what we use it for most. It gets used most days. Id like to be able to flick through more quality movies when I'm looking for something to watch, not just endless naff horror films.

I think it is well worth the price.

fackinell · 23/11/2013 23:53

Subscribed to Netflix around 6mths ago. Love the great variety of TV series and have watched a lot of films. A few more new releases would be good but all round good value for the price, we are never stuck for something to watch.

dizzydel · 24/11/2013 00:22

Just switched from Lovefilm which we found very limited for kids. Very happy so far. Good range of tv series and medieval drama.

michmum · 24/11/2013 00:45

I love it. I finished my subscription with Sky few months ago as I wasn't benefiting from everything on it. I really only wanted the films for odd occasion to watch with my children. I subscribed to lovefilm.com and never used it. So complicated the membership!
Then I found Netflix for same price but unlimited watching. My 3yrold loves putting all the carebears and Dora on. I love the fact I can watch a film whenever without worrying if I or my children have used the allowance up! It's great and so simple to use. I have already recommended to two friends !

TurnipSlippers · 24/11/2013 00:54

I have been using Netflix for around a year now. Used the free month trial and was hooked! Use it on average 4 times a week and watch a mixture of tv shows and films either on my own, with my partner or as a family. Really like that it can be used on more than one device...quite often OH is watching an action film on the Xbox and I'm watching a romcom on the tablet at the same time.

The new update has pleased me - means I can read the blurb at my own speed rather than racing to finish before it scrolled away.

As a family we are quite big on entertainment - we all enjoy gaming and movies. Netflix fits in really in this regard as it is often used as a 'there is nothing on tv, let's watch Netflix!' standby.

Netflix Kids is great, so easy in the school holidays, if I need a moments peace I can just put the kids section on and let them choose a film/program. It's brilliant for rainy days and saves the nagging I would get scrolling through the main app. I love that it's advert free too - means no pester power!

Pumpkintopf · 24/11/2013 01:41

We kept our Netflix subscription solely to watch House of cards. Loved it, and loved that it was all available at once - though it meant a few late nights! Have also loved binge-watching breaking bad. Film selection not great but getting better. We like your innovation with commissioning your own material (HoCards). DH doesn't think the interface is great. Kids don't tend to use it- usually use sky.

Springcleanish · 24/11/2013 06:23

If you currently use or have used Netflix in the past, what do you think?
It's OK. Would like more choice in film and more parental control.
Do you use Netflix on a regular basis?
Yes, my ds (15) daily and dd (10) weekly
If so, how do you use it - do you mainly watch movies or are you addicted to a particular TV series?
Film before bed (ds)
Film for Sunday am (dd)
When do you watch on your own, with your partner or with your family?
With dd on Sunday, DS/DH late evening, DS on own
What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?
TV fom 8.30 till 10, most nights, whilst doing other jobs, mning
Children's TV 6-7 on none club nights and sat/ sun am
What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?
Yes, dd does, but she can't use that section only so isn't allowed on Netflix without me or she'd use it more.
If you have never tried Netflix before, what are your impressions of it? Is it something youd try? If so, why? If not, why not?
Trial membership completed, is worth £5/6 a month, so keeping subscription.

HolidayArmadillo · 24/11/2013 06:44

We love Netflix, I'd say as a family we use it every day. The kids area is really easy for them to navigate - even for my 3 year old. My husband and I have watched several box sets, including Breaking Bad which judging by the comments on here must be your biggest draw. I'd like to see more content though, the movie selection isn't great and your USA service has a much wider selection overall. One thing I'd love to see on Netflix is Game of Thrones plus the end of series like Dexter. Overall we love Netflix and will continue to subscribe, using it through our smart TV, XbOx and iPad.

DeathByLaundry · 24/11/2013 07:57

We subscribed recently. DH had a free trial and we got into Breaking Bad. It's over now so we'll need to look for something else to get into. I haven't really had a chance to explore yet so no idea what is on there but I still have to catch up with the latest series of the Walking Dead and Homeland so I'll look for those first.

The film selection is poor but the actual service is brilliant. No buffering, automatically keeps your place, and really great value. The rolling subscription is really attractive - if it was a contract I'd think of it as £70 a year and probably not bother, but it's nice know we can unsubscribe anytime.

DeathByLaundry · 24/11/2013 07:58

Oh and I haven't used it for any kids stuff yet.

EstoyAqui · 24/11/2013 09:04

We love Netflix in our house. I was originally asked to trial it for Mumsnet last year and have kept up the subscription.

Its content is up to date and I have found many new series' to watch since subscribing. I would recommend:

'It's always sunny in Philadelphia'
'Orange is the new black'
'Doug Stanhope'
'House of cards'

I love that it has many series developed specifically for them. Breaking Bad being shown realtime without a delay from the US was great. We have downloaded in the past but since having Netflix not so much.

Personally we watch a lot of movies as a family. Although they do not always have the latest releases we don't mind as the selection is broad enough to find something to watch. We have normally watched any film we must see at the cinema in advance anyway. In fact, we have found several new programmes and series whilst looking for another product.

Since I have joined their have been several changes to it, all for the better, I think its a great service and cannot see us leaving any time soon. I would go so far as to say I evangelise about them to friends and family.

My DD and DS watch the Kids section on her iPad. DH and I watch the other profile on either our TV, PS3, iPhone, smartphone or iPad. Because we use different devices we get to see how it looks on other platforms and I think they have worked really hard to make the user experience consistent.

Things that would make it better for me:

Have an IMDB type search for either Actors or Actresses. Link to this content.

Password protect the adult profiles.

Allow the items not interested in to be noted and further influence recommendations.

babiesmakemecrazy · 24/11/2013 09:41

I've been using netflix for over a year and it's great! New films are added and series are updated every now and again. All my family use my netflix which is great for everyone. It's used daily!
Obviously more choice would be great but I am happy with what there is at the moment. The only things that would make me come off netflix is if the price went up or if it stopped you using on multiple devices.

SummerSevern · 24/11/2013 09:48

DH and I watch in bed with headphones while trying to get the baby to fall asleep. We've enjoyed Orange is the New Black and are currently working our way through White Collar.
I like that you can set up your own profile; so DH isn't subjected to suggestions related to Doc Martin!
Our DD isn't old enough to use the kids section yet, but we've certainly been enjoying the Disney films!

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 24/11/2013 11:33

We have Netflix and lovefilm

Agree with others that its not very good for films.

We like to have incase there are the odd shows that are only on Netflix.

DH watches things more than me though. I had to ask him if we still had it as I didn't know.

Ive heard that the American version is much better than the UK version so would like something that is as good. Especially as we watch more American shows than British shows.

We dont use it that much as a couple as we have too many other programs that we watch ATM, but if we have the odd night with nothing to watch we will have a look to see if there is anything worth watching on Netflix.

Use it everyday. We each (DH, I and DD) have our own profiles. I love the new Profiles feature as each of us have completely different viewing preferences - very useful.

TV Entertainment plays a larger role than I would like in weeknight life honestly. I don't like or watch much TV (prefer browsing on Mumsnet instead Grin). But when we do watch a movie together, it is usually movies off Netflix.

Yes, my child uses Netflix Kids - about twice or thrice a week. She is not much of a TV watcher herself. She loves the lack of ads, the on-demand nature and the actual programmes. We use AppleTV to access Netflix, she finds it very easy to navigate and choose what she likes to see.

BsshBossh · 24/11/2013 19:57

We (DH and I) watch Netflix on our TV via Apple TV. Very easy to use though I wish it was easier to discover new stuff. We watch mainly TV series. Breaking Bad and Luther were huge hits in our house; I'm currently making my way through Buffy Grin to relive my youth. Nice range of independent films which I've added to My List. Watch it three times a week. I wish you made more of the Netflix US content available here eg Mad Men otherwise I can see we'll cancel within 6 months.

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?
We never watch live TV these days other than news and Match of the Day. Everything's recorded, iTunes, YouTube or Netflix. We don't watch alot of TV so we seek out specific material to watch at a time suitable to us.

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?
The Kids section is excellent even though my 5yo only watches Max and Ruby. But she's ODed on that now and doesn't scroll through the other choices. But perhaps if she was older...

JumpingJetFlash · 25/11/2013 11:36

We have had Netflix for about 9 months and so far so good :-)

We mainly watch TV Series in an evening - I like the fact that you can watch from the start. I occasionally watch films but it doesn't have the most amazing selection.

My 6 yr old loves to use it on the iPad for a lazy Sunday morning :-) and having the separate profiles is fab to make sure that she doesn't see anything inappropriate. Only downside is that it's been glitchy recently with logging out and mixing the 2 profiles together which can be a bit worrying.

I have recommended it to a friend who was about to start mat leave because of the Multi platform benefits and being able to watch from the start.

superbagpuss · 25/11/2013 12:41

I like netflix, a good range of tv shows and slighter older films - nothing very new to watch. I tend to watch on my own, but DH will also watch other series on his own.

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?
We allow dc to have screen time each evening and netflix is a good way of finding a show they like - it avoids adverts and owning lots of dvds for them.

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?

Not at the moment as we control what they watch but as they get older is a good way on allowing them access but being sure what they see is suitable.

FishfingersAreOK · 25/11/2013 12:41

If you currently use or have used Netflix in the past, what do you think?
We have been signed up for about 6-8 weeks and so far love it. As previous users of LoveFilm we found we were not using this but Netflix suits us better (so far)

Do you use Netflix on a regular basis? If so, how do you use it - do you mainly watch movies or are you addicted to a particular TV series? When do you watch on your own, with your partner or with your family?
It has become a firm favourite on Saturday mornings - my 5yo DS watched MythBusters with DH (I get to lie in bed). Also love the availability of series - Dexter, Some SciFi thing DH watches - and if I want cheesy stuff I could hunt around for it Have also used it for the occasional Sunday afternoon film curled up in front of the fire. I go on MN whilst DH doing his Sci-Fi stuff - so overall is a mix of (mostly) family stuff but some solo.

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?
We are not massive TV watchers. Unlike a lot of our friends the television is not on all the waking hours. What this does mean is that when we do watch it we are more selective - not just channel hopping to find anything that would do - when we watch we want to have something on that is an active, positive choice IYSWIM.

So on the virgin box we have recorded stuff we want to watch/the DCs want
(Blue Peter, Junior Bake-off, Spiderman for eg) rather than just shoving CBBC on. Netflix just add to the repertoire.

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?
They know it is there. But as above - their viewing tends to be stuff they are interested in - an with the limited viewing time we do we have enough stuff already as regular choices.

If you have never tried Netflix before, what are your impressions of it? Is it something youd try? If so, why? If not, why not?

momb · 25/11/2013 12:46

We've been using netflix through the wii on our family TV for several weeks now. We like it. It doesn't have all the films that we have searched for but there's always something that we haven't seen or that we really enjoy.
We had previously tried LoveFilm but it had no films for download that we wanted to watch so cancelled that after only a couple of weeks.
For us it's a replacement for going to the DVD shop so we weren't expecting every film ever made to e avaiable.
I do really like the recommendation feature based on what we've viewed before. We've seen and enjoyed films that we woudln't have picked up on otherwise. I would like to see more British, more classics and more offbeat films (thinking of stuff like Little Miss Sunshine, Dogma, Shallow Grave etc).
We haven't watched lots of TV series with it but are currently enjoying Blue panet. The children do use it to watch american kids shows.
We have never had Sky.
We use Netflix for half an hour most mornings (children) and then 2 or 3 times during the week in the evening. Apart from the news we haven't watched much else since getting the service.

Dontwanttobeyourmonkeywrench · 25/11/2013 12:53

I love Netflix. We have it on the tablet, laptop, wii and smartphone and it's fantastic for keeping DD and DS entertained in the car because they like to watch different things (big age gap).

Dh watches it on the tablet in bed and mainly watches all the conspiracy stuff that I have no interest in, and for a technophobe he really enjoys it.
