Are you a Netflix subscriber? Share your experiences - £250 voucher up for grabs

Netflix would like to know what Mumsnetters think of their entertainment subscription service.

If you currently use or have used Netflix in the past, what do you think? Do you use Netflix on a regular basis? If so, how do you use it - do you mainly watch movies or are you addicted to a particular TV series? When do you watch on your own, with your partner or with your family?

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?

If you have never tried Netflix before, what are your impressions of it? Is it something you'd try? If so, why? If not, why not?

Everyone who adds their thoughts will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Love2Shop voucher (this prize draw has already taken place).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw,

MNHQ

We have recently moved to a pre historic version of internet connection (half a meg). so had to unsubscribe from our beloved Netflix which we used to watch things we wouldn't normally such as The Survivors which Netflix recommended.

Once we make it into this century bandwidth wise we will be back!

MakeTeaNotWar · 22/11/2013 20:51

I signed up to watch season 5 of breaking bad and have renewed the subscription beyond the 30 day free trial to watch The Killing. DH and I watch it together. It's good value but I would like to be able to browse the library before signing up. Movie choice is poor

FunnyRunner · 22/11/2013 21:06

I've been thinking about getting it for ages but keep stalling until we get a Smart TV - can't be bothered setting up the Wi. For me the appeal is definitely the TV boxsets - I used to spend a fortune on them, then realised a lot of the older ones were on Netflix so seemed sensible to sign up to it instead. I love watching on demand, just don't get the chance to sit down until DC in bed.

The one thing that would seal it for me would be importing the US catalogue into the UK catalogue. I know people who have managed to do it through their PS3 etc and they said there are huge amounts more content.

ABitterPIL · 22/11/2013 21:19

I signed up basically to re watch buffy the vampire slayer while housebound with a broken leg. I thought it was great and ventured onto other things i hadn't seen.

I have unlimited data on my samsung phone and have kept the netflix subscription because i can watch on the go too.

Dd loves watching on her tablet and we have it on the xbox too so can watch on the big screen as a family.

The massive downside is the fact that the us content is MILES better and I feel robbed only javing access to such a small percentage.

clabsyqueen · 22/11/2013 21:24

Just subscribed this month.
Mainly for watching TV shows with my other half TV shows (OITNB sons of anarchy and house of cards) as I've usually watched most films on iTunes or cinema.
Using the kids films a lot with my 2 year old but a lot of the TV shows for kids seem a bit dated (only browsed quickly).
Watched a few trashy movies in bed whilst tending to my new baby
Overall I like it but think ill tire of the movie section quickly.

Tikkamasala · 22/11/2013 21:28

I recently got it within the last month. I am on the free trial but going to keep the subscription I think, as it is not too expensive.

Wha I do really like is the fact it allows me to watch on 3G - it is so annoying that some on demand apps like 4od don't allow this. I have unlimited 3G on my iPad and the wifi in my house is sometimes a bit weak so I really like to be able to watch on my 3G. I have lined up loads of TV series to catch up with there, not tried any films yet but I have noticed the selection of films is not as good as the TV.

My recommendation would be for you to keep widening the selection of what you have available so that if possible you can get all mainstream and up to date TV series and films.

kiery · 22/11/2013 21:30

We've had Netflix for about a year now and think its great!

We watch through Apple TV on our only tv in the house; we have freeview on our tv but can only get a decent picture on the bbc channels. As a result, we watch something on Netflix most days.

We watch a mixture of tv programmes and films. I like the fact that there are not so up to date movies; introduced my DDs to some great movies and tv programmes that are just not shown anymore. We also enjoy the foreign movies and tv programmes.
Really enjoyed, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Fringe and watching as a family, My Hero, IT crowd, Buffy to name but a few.

Freyathecatt · 22/11/2013 21:50

We have Netflix and to be honest i'm quite disappointed with the range of tv shows and films available. In other countries the range is infinitely larger and better and it just feels like we are getting a second rate offering here.

I subscribed shortly after the birth of our first son, gotta have something to do during those nighttime feeds and whilst ensconced on the sofa all day! To begin with i was relatively happy with it, but after visiting Canada and using the subscription while there, became wise to the ginormous range available to subscribers there. Newer films, more tv series' and more seasons of tv series'.

4yoniD · 22/11/2013 21:59

I am a netflix subscriber at the moment. I hardly watch it though. Every now and then I think "Ooooh, I'd really like to watch xyz " but when I look for it on netflix ... surprise surprise .... they don't do it. I will cancel as soon as my husband is finished with it. The kids agree with me - their favourite programmes are never on netflix either.

Tommy · 22/11/2013 21:59

we have it and DSs are currently watching some Lego thing.... Hmm. DS1 has watched all of the Dr Who to get ready for the new series. We dip in and out - sometimes I forget it's there. A text or email pointing out new films/TV series might be helpful

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/11/2013 22:10

I was a member years ago and it used to SUCK. Really, it took years for me to sign up again and that was only because of Arrested Development.

Now it doesn't suck and is worth the money to me. DD watches a few things and it is great for her because I can stick on ten minutes of something and she can watch on the computer, tablet or TV easily without a lot of faff. It has a few films and series that are favorites.

If Netflix want to win back people like me, they really have to let people know that the selection has improved. DH, who was even more dubious then I was, is won over. Maybe a month's free trial that doesn't involve giving a credit card...

labelwriter · 22/11/2013 22:15

We have Netflix and really like it to a point. Not enough in the way of current films and I find the children's section quite limited. It would be really useful to have a New Releases section. Loved House of Cards though. When is the next series coming out??

sharond101 · 22/11/2013 22:20

I don't entirely know what netflix offers but mean DH would never agree to subscribe:-(

NotAFeminist · 22/11/2013 22:22

We have been with Netflix since it launched over here in the UK and have, on the most part, been very impressed with the service. I think it is great value for money and they care about their customers and listen to what they want and make changes. When we wanted a play queue, they gave us lists so that all of the shows we want to watch are in one place and you don't have to remember and go searching for them every time!

I love how it can be used across multiple platforms at the same time... My husband likes to watch on his xbox and I can watch on my laptop. We've both used it on our phones, too.

They have a dedicated kids section which is great as, if you have kids old enough to play around with buttons, there's no risk of them accidentally clicking on an older, more adult show that they shouldn't be watching! The content on the kids section is great and keeps my little one entertained whilst I do little chores around the house.

I love the original content created by Netflix and the fact they put all of the episodes up in one go so you can blast through a whole series in a weekend if you want to!!

I think the TV content is better than the film section. But I believe they are working on that. (It doesn't matter too much in our home as we just got Sky Movies, too! greedy b*stards

Perhaps their best feature is that you can create your own profiles so you can receive recommendations based on what you watch, not based on what everyone else is watching which is a major plus! Husband loves this as his recommendations lists aren't 'clogged up with all my shitty ass shows' (his words not mine!!)

I just love it. My husband and I have shows that we like to watch together and ones we watch separately. I just finished the IT crowd which I loved! He loves Dexter, Breaking Bad, House of Cards... I love re-watching Modern Family!

If you hadn't guessed... I think it's great. There is something for everyone and it's great value for money and there is alot of variety and usually a big update with new stuffs at the start of every month! I would recommend everyone at least have a go with the free trial and take it from there!

climbs back out of Netflix's ass :P

We had netflix but cancelled because there wasn't enough choice. We are considering returning (and leaving lovefilm) as we want to watch house of cards and orange is the new black but are put off as you don't have any mad men! None at all! We watch a LOT of tv - it is our main entertainment.

MurderOfGelth · 22/11/2013 22:34

I like Netflix, and use it a lot, daily in fact. We got rid of our TV license ages ago as we never bother watching live TV, and decided to pay for Netflix instead, which has definitely been a better solution.

Only problem I have is that I'm not overly keen on the format used for Netflix on the PS3, prefer browsing on the PC, find the PS3 format really irritating if I'm just looking for inspiration. However it's easier to watch Netflix on the PS3 as it's permanently hooked up to the TV. So I tend to end up with it open on both just to find something to watch.

The selection is good, though I'd always be happy if they added more. (Doing a deal with BBC for old shows would make me ecstatically happy!)

froggers1 · 22/11/2013 22:49

We have been using Netflix for about a month and love it. Currently working my way through Breaking Bad...but we have watched films - kids films and adults films. Always watch with my husband or my son.

What role does Entertainment play in your familys life and how does Netflix fit in?

We watch TV's in the evenings when the kids are in bed. The kids might watch a film on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

What about the dedicated Netflix Kids section - do your DCs use this to watch their favourite shows?

They have only watched films so far.

Fumnudge · 22/11/2013 23:16

Please don't leave the last 'seasons' off of my favourite series!!!
Yes, you know which ones... Luther....Fringe.

Also agree with the subtitle comments, with a v young child there were lots of films I couldn't watch because I couldn't hear them (at 3am)

AntoinetteCosway · 22/11/2013 23:26

I've subscribed recently and stayed past the free trial. The Netflix Originals are brilliant but the films on offer are rubbish. I'd also love the TV to be more up to date. Would love America's Next Top Model, Girls, Nashville...

MotherIsTheBestBet · 23/11/2013 00:06

DP and I subscribed to watch the last series of the brilliant Arrested Development. Once we'd watched that we didn't use it much on account of the slightly dispiriting video-shop-bargain-bucket quality of most of the films (except for 2 year old ds who just LOVES the super-bizarre Thomas the Tank Engine film on there with Alec Baldwin). Then we binged on Breaking Bad until that was all over, and now DS is the only one that watches it much. Hoping for another really good series to come along soon and lure us away from the BBC again.

jojane · 23/11/2013 00:24

Kids watch netflix all the time. We have smart tv so easy to switch to Netflix. I watch it on iPad mainly while cooking in kitchen. Just watched dexter and now waiting for last 2 series to be available.
I wish it was easier to browse rather than having to search for a specific programme and would really really love it if we could have the Samemstuff available as the American Netflix!

GingerbreadMoomin · 23/11/2013 01:08

I use it more to catch up on tv series that I've missed rather than films. I think the film selection could be better to be honest but then for the subscription cost I can't really moan too much. We use Netflix Kids more than the regular Netflix now too

HootyMcOwlface · 23/11/2013 04:29

We use Netflix and I love it!

We mainly watch TV series, some on my own and some with DH. I watch on the TV or tablet while my 1 year old DS naps, and we occasionally we all watch a film together at the weekend. I tend to watch quite a lot of old TV series that are new to me. Between Netflix and iPlayer we don't tend to watch much live TV in our house any more.

I use the kids section for my DS as a last resort when I'm knackered. At the moment he loves the singalong Barney the dinosaur programmes.

I'd like to see more of a selection of TV series, and the most up to date seasons, as some are only available on US Netflix for example.

glastocat · 23/11/2013 06:43

I loved Netflix and was gutted to realize you can't get it in Oz. Please come here so I can get rid of Foxtel!
