Transition

DS1 is in year 9 and we are preparing ourselves for 'transition' whatever that is. Or should I say bracing ourselves?

Does anyone have experience of this process, good or bad? Is anyone else at the same stage as us and wondering what it's all about?

DS1 has severe learning disabilities and I wonder at the concept of choice when there seem to be so few options post 18

I am sure I read on a thread that you live near me.
dd is now in yr 10 an d they want her to leave her lovely school when she is 16 and go to a local sn college. so I am finding it scarey.

Sorry not to answer - this board is so quiet, i don't look often and was thinking of posting same thing in the SN children section. I'm in Brighton Jimmy - is that near you?

The SN college near us is good luckily. It's the bit after that - the rest of DS1's life - I am really worried about.

How much info have you been given so far about future options?

we are only just entering transition, so only college Is being discussed, I am so scared of 19 plus, as I think they will just think she will be at home......

Hey 2shoes, it is a link...I think I know what you mean! What a co-incidence. Wonder if we know each other?!! Maybe your DD is up a hill or on the downs...?

I know one mum who really had to fight for residential care. They said 'you are middle class, you can cope with dd at home'. I've been put off post 18 respite facilties as they seem to bung the young ones in with people in their 60's. I await a training day on Transition coming up this month with a mixture of excitement and dread

she is out in the country, in a private/independant school(that has a big site witheverything there including 16 plus)

If your dd is happy where she is, what is the advantage of moving her apart from a financial one for the LEA?
