Therapy for autistic teenagers

What sort of counselling/ therapy/ support has actually helped your autistic child, if any?
My DD had play therapy some time ago but wants something different. She takes a long time to trust and connect, so a very time limited course would probably not help.

You could look at a like animal assisted therapy or art therapy. OT and SALT can help too.

It’s not therapy as such but some find Mindjam useful.

My dd sees a person centred specialist ASD therapist - she is excellent. It is talking therapy but completely different to the standard approach - no talk about feelings! The therapist helps dd understand her experiences through the lens of an autistic person's experience of the world and helps her find solutions and ways to advocate for herself. The difference in dd's confidence is huge and she always comes out much lighter. The therapist is autistic, which I think makes a big difference.

@nosykids do you mind me asking how you found this therapist?

Only just seen this.

The team who diagnosed dd recommended her - she is incredible and we’ve had difficulty finding someone as good for ds (as she can’t see two people from the same family).

She is in Warwickshire if this helps you at all - drop me a pm if by any chance you’re local and I’ll give you her details.

@nosykids thanks, but in London. Also DS would prefer a male. Everyone I talk to seems like a charlatan!

Yep - I agree - dd’s therapist would too. Run a mile if they are also a ‘life coach’. We’re having the same issue trying to find someone for ds - no one else has come close to being as impressive. It’s really frustrating and she doesn’t know anyone to recommend (she was quite up front about how she ‘doesn’t really mix’ - which is fair enough). If we find anyone I’ll let you know.
