ds2 (asd) gets extrememly anxious and seems to be having quite a tough time with puberty and adolescence. In the past his consultant has said she could give him seratonin uptake inhibitors (not sure if thats the right name) but I think they are just anti -depressants and I'm not happy to go down that route. the other option that has been mentioned in the past when he has been self harming or making himself sick has been CBT

Again I am not sure I want to go down that route either as I'm rather worried that too much talking about negative thoughts might just reinforce them. his language is rather limited anyway (Can talk fluently but doesn't always make sense and uses nonsense words that we have over the years come to understand) not sure any therapist would though.

Wondered if there was anything other than St John's wort that was a good mood booster I have heard of magnesium or maybe its manganese or even potassium I can't remember.

Any suggestions?

yes, Mg is good, you could also add vit B complex (v. good de-stresser), also Zn & essential fatty acids (omega 3/6/9) are also good.
I use the above for my ds (and take occasional tablet myself).
I also use some Vogel herbal tinctures for calming effect. If I can't go to sleep easily myself, I would take 5 drops in a sip of water and I am convinced it helps.
