Rude Friends

Grrrr. Just spent the weekend at a family scout camp. All had a great time.

DS1 (Aspergers) spent hours and hours talking with one of his friends about warhammer (Games Workshop). It was definately a proper two way conversation and the friend was very excited about it all.

So I went to his Mum and said that they'd been talking all day about warhammer and did her son want to meet my son at games workshop one day to play. And she said "No, I won't let him play that, I don't want him turning into a geek."

Grrrr. Just yet another stupid comment that hurts. I know it's her problem not mine - if she can't support her son in whatever he's intersted in, and is forcing him to do what she thinks he should do. But we are so proud of how well DS is doing at warhammer (it's a strategy war game thingy), because you play it in real life, with real people, so (for him) it's very social. And then you have these ignorant twats which makes you realise that whatever you do you will always be laughed at and ostracised.

p.s. I know this is petty and minor. Just wanted a small petty rant anyway....

Rant away.

What did you say to her?

I'd have been tempted to look her in the eye and say "a geek like my son, you mean?" and enjoy watching her try to wriggle out of it. But I have a mean streak thiiiiiiiiis wide.

Oh how ridiculous of her, and of course it will hurt!

And she doesn't have a clue. Our DS1 (NT) loves it, and from our experience of it so far, it is a wonderful community of people - mixing across all ages, everyone willing to help each other.

Is he excited about the New Rules? - bet you have heard about nothing else .

Unfortunately DS2 (AS) is TERRIFIED of all things Warhammer, shame as I would love him to have such an interest!

Goblinchild · 27/06/2010 21:05

She's too late.
Your lad has a mother who supports his interests, her lad doesn't and will steal her credit card to buy Warhammer online when he is a sullen and alienated teenager.

We can wait for an update.

Greensleeves · 27/06/2010 21:06

I think that was unkind of her

I would probably have upset you too though, I would probably have said I find war games disgusting and don't think they are necessary or appropriate for my children

even the one with Aspergers

mariagoretti · 27/06/2010 21:17

Maybe she's on the spectrum herself?

IndigoBell · 27/06/2010 21:26

Greenslevels it's not really a wargame. It's a fantasy game set in the far far future.

It's similair to dungeons and dragons, with dice and figurines. (Which they have to build, so not only is it good for his social skills, it's also good for his dyspraxia)

Anyway, I don't think you finding war games disgusting is offensive. There are loads of computer games I wouldn't let my kids play. That would be a valid (if OTT) reason to not let her DC play....

It's the blatant labelling of everyone who likes warhammer as geeks (which has negative connotations) which is hurtful. Or maybe it's just the negative connotations of 'geek' which is hurtful. I'll be thrilled if my son grows up to be a geek.

Unfortuanely we're still a long way away from people thinking DS is a 'geek'. Geek would be a huge step forward from where he is now....

you could have said better a geek than a druggie or alcoholic and walk off...I to am stunned by disgust by pure ignorant filth

This woman is not worth even making the effort to communicate with again as her head is stuck to far up her own to even know how insulting she really is!

TheArsenicCupCake · 27/06/2010 21:40

I'm with goblin!

I would have just asked her what exactly is wrong with being a geek... Seeing it's mostly geeks ( I hate the word btw) who solve medical or engineering problems.. Or hey let's look at all the IT people out there!

meltedmarsbars · 27/06/2010 22:24

I love my geeky friends! Like theArsenicCupCake, I think there is definitely nothing wrong with being a geek!

Ignore it and be glad you ds likes such an interesting game! Sounds like the other mother doesn't really know what warhammer is.
