hello i am new to this site my son is severly autistic and starting a new school this september.

He will be starting PECS there does anyone have experience of using this system.

you'll be inundated with responses from people soon Janice. There are a few mums on here who use PRECS for their children.

TC is right Janice! Thingsare a bit quiet here at present,but PECS is a hot topic. If you want to check out some old threads,go up to 'Search Archived Messages' at the top of the screen and put in PECS or look backwards over the Special Needs thread.

I'm a salt (also have a dd with communication difficulties,so a foot in both camps) and am mad about PECS!!

Hi Janice. I am a special needs teacher as well as having a daughter with high functioning ASD. I have taught children using PECS and it has been REALLY positive. Children with no speech are able to use PECS to tell you what they want and to express other things as well. It is so positive to see a child who has not been able to communicate have their 'own language' given to them. PECS is also shown to help encourage speech and also encourages (makes) children to interact with others. My DD starts school tomorrow- I am as nervous as hell!!!

My son (who is nearly 2 years old) has no dx, but has no expressive language and is globally delayed.

As others have said, there is a wealth of information and experience available on here, but it being the summer hols it is quieter than normal on here atm.

Hi janice, my 5 year ds old has HFA, I've no experience of PECS, but thought I'd say hello anyway.

I am a childminder and had no prior knowledge of PECS until this year when I started caring for a 3yr old who was using this system of communication to assist his verbal communication. I was fascinated and his mum was very, very positive about the benefits PECS had brought to her son. I went on a two day PECS workshop in May and it was very professionally run - not at all commercial - and very informative, attended by both parents and 'professionals'. I would really recommend going on the 2 day course if at all possible.

PECS is a great system. How old is your son. Mine is 6, non-verbal and PECS makes everything a lot easier. Screaming fits for things can be diffused because he can communicate what he wants, its helping him learn set phrases and he vocalises more with PECS as prompts. Can also be used for teaching concepts.

As Goosey says the pyrmaid courses are very professional.
