Like Claw I don't venture outside SN except for the Doctor Who thread in Telly Addicts (sad!). For the first few years I was on MN I went all over the board and enjoyed it, but now I can't be arsed and I don't have the time as its all got so big. People can be soooo serious sometimes and its not my job, or the rest of you, to educate, enlighten or entertain them, never mind make them feel better and justified in the pig ignorant views.

LollipopViolet · 24/06/2010 11:53

I've just given the transport thread a piece of my mind. I'll probably get flamed for it but I don't care. A certain poster early on really wound me up! I only go on here, Chat and some other boards. I tend to steer clear of AIBU though, got flamed myself when I was a VERY new poster and it was vile.

Things are definitely anti-SN at the moment. It seems disability awareness is going backwards

IngaLand · 24/06/2010 12:07

There is a lot of ignorance within the general public at large about SN, and I think that is just reflected on MN.

God forbid they ever have to experience SN in their own families. Oh how it all changes when the boot is on the other foot.

Ignore, ladies. personally, I think the SN section is where some of the most amazing women on MN are to be found

DJAngel · 24/06/2010 13:28

I only come on here.. I experience enough shitty ignorance in RL.. I'm afraid I'd find it in vast quantities on other boards so never leave the comfort of SN..

Having said that I did post on the breastfeeding board a year ago and the bf lot were very nice..

During the election I did had a wander to have a look and was amazed how vile people could be to each other.. Mind you lots of women in any kind of community creates lots of very complex dynamics and I say from experience that there always seem to be factions and splits that seem to create an outlet for anger.. It's sad really when we should all be supporting each other.. in the way that I've always experienced on the SN board.. Thank goodness..

TheArsenicCupCake · 24/06/2010 13:49

I rarely venture out of SN these days.. Tbh I can't be arsed nor do I have the time.
Oh and today .. Just to make my day I have been told in RL.. " so and so doesn't believe in any sld or asd.. So go careful what you say to them.. In their eyes your ds2 just needs a good hiding.. That would sort him out"

it annoys the he'll out of me.. I never ask for anything other than the dx at the time and for MS school to help him access the education afforded to all... I claim nothing.. and yet we still get blah blah blah in RL..

I don't need it on MN as well..

geekgirl · 24/06/2010 13:53

the transport thread was really elightening - in a bad way.

I think the sentiments shown on MN is a reflection of the attitude to our children in the world at large, and evidently the Tories' attack on, amongst other groups, the disabled is having an effect on people's attitude. I dread to think what will happen in education.

bullet234 · 24/06/2010 14:48

There has been an increasing endeavour by parts of the media and parts of both the previous and current governments to portray those on DLA or Income support/ESA as feckless wasters who are costing the country untold billions simply because they clearly are defrauding the system. From the government's viewpoint, such an action is done because they wish to make cuts and they will find it easier to make those cuts if public opinion is turned against certain sections of society. You can not get a clearer indication that this government believes that people with disabilities and/or their carers are lying when they announce medical assessments as part of a cost cutting exercise.
The papers have no real reason other than they are a pile of shite.
But these attitudes then get reflected back in to society and some of it ends up on mumsnet and the not so charming comments seen on Loudlass's and Apocalypse Cheese's thread.
It's nasty, it's unpleasant and there's no excuse for it.

TheJollyPirate · 24/06/2010 15:33

It's crap isn't it? I particularly enjoyed coldtiz post and think she summed it up very well. In the same way as LL who said "when you are willing to trade places then you can comment". I would add to that "until you can trade places you can fuck right off".

I've just started getting DLA and think it's generous towards me - in fact because of the DLA and the extra tax credit I am better off by over £400 a month. Not bad until you consider I lost £1000 a month when I reduced my hours to meet DS's needs. It is a massive help though and DS will get the benefit of it.

2shoes · 24/06/2010 15:58

glad it isn't just me, thought I was getting paranoid.
I do wonder if we are too nice and should just start telling people where to go

I have done previously 2shoes, on another thread with a notoriously anti SN poster. Won't mention her here as bad form I suppose.

That was the first time I realised that SN are fair game on MN and it really felt like a punch in the stomach, this was a while ago too. It is the only thing I hate about MN.

I definitely think we should be as rude as possible to those who think they can have a negative opinion on SN while not actually having a clue.

2shoes · 24/06/2010 22:59

i am actually doing that now, no personal attacks but some people on the bus thread could try the patience off a saint, I though our kids were the ones with problems...........

OP posts:
bullet234 · 24/06/2010 23:24

It is winding me up. I can normally remain quite calm on internet forums but when people can blatantly ignore what is explained to them very clearly it is rather vexing.

CardyMow · 24/06/2010 23:32

londonone does seem to have her judgypants on too tight...but seriously, it's water off a duck's back to me by now, if it wasn't then the comments I've received in RL would have me wibbling in the corner by now! Having a disability myself and having 2 out of my 3 dc's having problems, well even social workers have said some very twuntish things to me in the past. I just look at it as that if I rise above it, and look at it with humour, it shows that it's other people's ignorance, not me doing something wrong.

What thread by apocalypse cheese is this? maybe I could go and beat the crap out of tell off any twunts on the thread....

5inthebackofthenet · 25/06/2010 06:38

LL, its this one.

Glad your thread hasn't affected you. I'd have dereged and moved country at some of those comments, so well done you!

roundthebend4 · 25/06/2010 07:04

2shoes I did fond skituk bit hard to break into at first as everyone seemed know each other well and fs not as badly affected as lot of the other dc. but few meet ups and is easier now and looking forward to camp

but also like MN but found at first it seemed the same but lol just bull dozed my way in .I use both boards

glittery · 25/06/2010 07:23

yeah you just flung yourself right into SK with a meet up didnt you, thats the best way!i was a member for years before i went on one!!

roundthebend4 · 25/06/2010 07:26

Yep London zoo ,

Davros · 25/06/2010 09:28

Ooer, I looked at only the first page of that thread and what I read was

2shoes · 25/06/2010 09:55

see I don't do the whole meet up with kids stuff, that is why I like the mn meet ups I go on, apart from a couple of babies no kids just wine

OP posts:
LollipopViolet · 25/06/2010 10:12

See, my sight isn't that much of an issue, but since going out and about lots more with my friend H, who has cp and uses a wheelchair, I've began developing armour, because some of the looks and comments are just awful.

Can't believe that on here, you can't be racist, homophobic, or anything else, but taking shots at SN is seemingly OK. That transport thread had some vile comments, yet I only spotted ONE that was removed by MN. I'm also not severe enough to move to other SN boards, so really, if I want a natter, I've only got here.

merrymouse · 25/06/2010 10:59

The sad thing about the bus thread was that so many people (or was it just one person over and over again?) insisted that because lots of people were too thick to understand the OP, they weren't actually thick.

It was as though they believed that there was a mysterious void between handover from school to carer where disability momentarily vanished.

glittery · 25/06/2010 11:34

oh we have non kids meet ups too 2shoes much drink is usually involved!

CardyMow · 25/06/2010 13:55

I've put MY two penny's worth in over there...and may have told alouiseg that I'd help OP do something rather unpleasant.....anyone else need duffing up?

LollipopViolet · 25/06/2010 14:05

YAY Loudlass! Well said! Ditto 2shoes and anyone else who has been on there talking sense!
