Can you pay privately from CAHMs?

My parents have my ds on a benenden health scheme thing, so you can get private health care. Does anyone know if you can pay private with CAHM's? as my ds is being referred there at the moment but the waiting list is immense apparently.

Some NHS consultants will run private clinics but it depends what you are being referred for. It will depend on the psychologist/psychiatrist involved e.g. whether any of them run clinics at local private hospitals etc. But you wouldn't be paying for CAMHS but for the specific consultant. You could ring CAMHS and ask.

If it is for an ASD assessment, these things are usually run on a multi-disciplinary basis so it may be that won't be able to be done.

Frankly, I think they should be paying me to go to my local CAMHS rather than the other way around!

Have you checked with Beneden that they will cover it? My mum has Benedon cover and there are quite a few exclusions. Probably worth finding out the name of the Dr at CAMHS then running it past them.

Our local CAMHS were rubbish but I was recommended a psychiatrist in a neighbouring authority who works for NHS as his 'day job' but also takes private clients. So I self-referred and he took us on no problem, despite not being his area. It's worth checking out because you might be lucky, also agree you should check with the private health care provider to be sure you're covered.

Thanks very much everyone, Can't do it through CAHMs but could see each individual seperately, going to look into it.
