I-CAN offer a 2 day multidisciplinary assessment from an SALT, Educational psychologist, specialist teacher and occupational therapist with verbal feedback and detailed reports for a cost of £1600 +VAT.

Has anyone used them?

I have and it is the best thing I have ever done .Thanks to their reports ds has a place in a speech unit and not just any unit the on that can provide the most support no coincedemce that unit ds is going to is run by former Ican teacher. Not even the Lea quibbled report they lifted all recomedations straight from report into statement Only quibble over ot but then at time for ds speech is biggest issue

Not for assessment, but for advice on Proposed Statement. Couldn't fault them for it or for predictions on how it would pan out.

Jumping in as we are about to start statementing for DS1 who has undiagnosed speech disorder. Does anyone know what age ICAN will assess? I thought someone said 4 but we need to get statement done before then as applying for schools when DS1 will be 3.9

sugarcandymountain · 02/06/2010 14:46

I did. I have some reservations, as DS has AS, and his speech/lang needs are quite subtle. I think ICAN deal more with S&LI than other aspects of ASD, eg sensory issues. The ICAN schools are for S&LI, not ASD. The OT was lovely, but didn't look at sensory issues or more subtle fine motor problems - the focus was on gross motor which isn't so much of an issue with DS.

Having said that, it was good to have 2 full days of assessment. They did some observations in class, as well as standardised tests on his own, so there was an additional perspective that other assessments have lacked.

They did write some fab recommendations, but sadly my stupid LA have refused to take any notice of them, although I expect the SEND tribunal will.

troublewithtalk is their biggest fan debs. Start a new thread calling for her.

I highly recommend them, I used them and the head of DS's school said their report was "one of the best I've read, and I've read many over the years"

bump for troublewithtalk

roundthebend4 · 03/06/2010 10:51

I used ican after troublewithtalk experiances but yes I would say that main needs to get the best from needs be s&L though the Ep report was very useful

Thanks, will post for troublewithtalk. I was wondering whether the SALT was more oriented to language problems or whether it would deal with the AS type issues that sugarcandy talks about.
