Expressive Speech - Feel Totally Alone Now, Can Anyone chat Please?

OK, firstly apologies because I don't even know if I should be on here - all I know is that everywhere else i feel like I don't fit, because if one more person tells me "don't worry he'll be fine", I will explode So am hoping that someone will come along that can/will chat to me and even have some things to share.

Ok as brief as I can.....

DS is almost 2.9. He is very happy, bright smiley chappy. He walked at 10 months very easily etc etc and met all other milestones before or on target. He is very independant, very loving and caring. he loves beng with people and hates people leaving. I do not think he is Autistic, though he is def not the normal 2 year old either. For example, one of his favourite things to watch is War of the Worlds stage show dvd. He remembers most things after being told them once. His understanding is fantastic and his play skills are brilliant. he shows a lot of empathy for others. he offers eye contact - prob more than most 2 year olds etc etc.

He has never once in his life put something into his mouth that he shouldn't have done - as a very young curious toddler I could have left him alone with a pile of marbles or coins knowing that he would not have put them into his mouth - because marbles were for playing with and coins were for shops and money boxes.

Anyway, he can't really talk. he cannot join words togther at all. he would never attempt to repeat a word after you. he speaks or does not. he is under SALT already, has had full hearing test and full oral examination - all clear. I think SALT are unsure what to do with him, his receptive speech is brilliant and the SALT sessions were not geared for him at all. They want his name to go down for our local speech unit also. he is taking part in an observation group at the university where they are conducting an "experiment" (for want of a better word sorry) on children who are not talking and seeing if it is linked to personality etc. Next week he will have an indepth speech assessment that even SALT don't offer, as part of this observation group.

But basically i really really am at my wits end I feel like screaming crying.........there is lots more I could say and things I have surely missed.

I just feel like I am drfiting out to sea but yet hope I do not sound too pathetic

No I haven't had a go at that - why is everything so blardy expensive? DH passed out when I told him how much one went for second hand.

Going to ask about it next week though and see if I can borrow one or something. I have asked at salt before and they looked at me blankly

Chickens - I just looked at your profile, where in cheshire are you? Wondered if we could meet up if you fancied it ant any point!! Might be intresting to see two "puzzles" with each other! Please tell me to get lost if a silly idea though

I am going to ask again about two to talk definitely!!

I'm in Stockport don't drive but happy to travel to meet up or anything.

Justabout, we do not unfirtunately. I haven't even got anyone to have him so I can do the makaton course grrrrrrrrr. I have just applied for DLA this morning, never even thought about that so we'll see - it would enable him to attend a a placement at elast once a week then starting now rather than waiting 7 months - as you said, don't ask/push - don't get. he sounds like he is an alien!!!!

maxy - keep checking on ebay - I got a copy for about £25 quid on there. as a compromise, you could order a new copy of "you make the difference" - also Hanen, not as good or detailed as ITT but its only about £13 brand new.

chickens - yes, absolutely worth going on the It Takes Two Course - it was by far the best of the NHS SALT that DS got. You will get 4 SALT home visits as part of the course, it's structured into it.

maxybrown · 29/05/2010 09:17

thanks total - watching one last week and it went for £45 plus post

OP posts:
TotalChaos · 29/05/2010 09:33

you can get it new for about £35 inc. postage from Winslow publications - www.winslow-cat.com

maxybrown · 29/05/2010 10:02

thanks total, I am going to ask next week about it - would really like to see it first ideally.

I would defintley push for salt dx and yes i did the makton course and it was over 2 full days and childcare is a right pita.It took ds 18 months to sign back but once it clicked it just took of even now without the signing lot of the time would not understand ds .

other option is lots of something special ds has signs that i know i not taught him so must have come from there

maxybrown · 29/05/2010 12:28

He has been under SALT since November last year. We watch something special and he is brilliant at doing them I have to say. Just so annoyed I can't do the course.

Yeah know how hard it is .ds has been under salty since he was 2.6. But truth was not really anygood all was assements no answers did not get anywhere till went to ican when ds was 4.4 then got a clear picture of what help ds needs and a dx after this nhs salt turned round said yep what I thought .arghh why she could not just sayit earlier.

But upshot is ds will go to speech unitin september

Don't stop pushing for answers and don't be afraid to come out ask straight do you think it is ,........

maxybrown · 29/05/2010 15:47

Thanks, I will. He is prob going to have his name put down for speech unit to start next sept 2011 so they have got that far at least. She is hoping though that staring at school nursery in Jan will be the push he needs.......we will see!! I always think of loads of things to ask after he has had an appointment
